Title: Not sure how to feel
Post by: KenoshaWarrior on November 26, 2013, 08:34:52 AM
Should the fan base feel good because we played well despite the loss
or should we feel upset we couldnt get the win despite two players having career days and rare double technical?

A casual glance at scoop suggests there are even amounts of people in both camps. I'm taking it as a positive because we did it on the road, against a team that couldn't miss, without our leading scorer.

We should feel good because we fought back and played tough against a good team on the road in an early non-conference matchup.

It's November. You don't make a Final Four in November. You look for improvement and signs that the team is starting to get it. I saw that last night. You'd always rather have the win, but there's nothing to worry about. Be glad there's progress, and even more glad there will be three Marquette games to watch this weekend.

I feel like I did in the Cinci OT loss:

Proud that they came back and made it a game.  To quote a Buzz cliche, character revealed.  Let's build on this.  Long season ahead.  Biggest down side is it was a rare opp for a non conf road W.

To expect anything more than a work in progress at this point in the season would have been wishful thinking at best. They have new guys, and guys doing new things all over the court. I said a week or so ago, they have talented players and a coach with a proven record of getting the most out of them. They just need to learn how to play, which will take some time. Winning the BE still appears to be a very reasonable possibility.

After watching the previous trainwrecks, I can't really ask for much more (besides an actual W).  D. Wilson played an awesome game, Thomas starting knocking down some 3's, JJJ got meaningful minutes and contributed right off the bat, Gardener got back in the mix...There's a lot to takeaway from that game.  The team was sort of a mess heading into the game and hopefully they build on this.

They won't turn it around overnight, but last night was a really good starting point.  They'll probably have some more clunkers offensively, but last night was encouraging.

We took huge steps forward last night.  ASU is going to win plenty of games this season and there is no shame in losing by a basket at their place, which was rocking last night.  It feels strange to me to feel so satisfied after a loss (to an unranked team no less).  Maybe its the fact that I've been waiting for so long to see D-Wil and Thomas score.  But I came away from that game feeling confident that we will be pretty good this year, which I haven't felt since the Ohio State game.

"We need to grow our hair out to protect our brains so we don't forget how to play like us."

I think they finally figured out how to play like a Marquette team last night. And that's a very good thing.

MU looked like the team we were all hoping they would be for the last 30 minutes.   ASU kept raining 3's and rode their crowd's emotion.   In Milwaukee or at a neutral site, MU probably comes out the winner.   I refuse to get upset about road losses to probable tourney teams.

how about just waiting until the conference season starts before making any judgements. Way too early to get caught up in the emotions of the good game, bad game, good half, bad half typical rollercoaster that is the early season. I'm sure Buzz and the team will sort itself out.

This drives me crazy. You can't cherry pick certain things from the game and make a conclusion. They happened. You could also cherry pick several bad things that happened.

We should feel pretty good, but I would expect you to feel upset because you almost always are.

I agree.  However, I am going to do the same sort of thing.  I believe the most frustrating point of the night was watching Marquette down 1 and get a turkey (3 defensive stops in a row... well, one was a missed 1 and 1, but still), but never take the lead during that point.  Instead there were two out of control fast breaks and a bad setup.

It's parts like that I find maddening.  This team is so close to finding some magic, but it's the little mistakes like that which make your realize how young our guards are.  Hopefully they can make the breakthrough against wisky and NM.

I agree, but that's not the same as saying "had so and so not scored 20 points we would have lost"

That was a very entertaining game, but incredibly frustrating to watch. MU just couldn't get over the hump. They had so many chances to take and maintain the lead.

I agree, I definitely was encouraged but we're going to need to win some of these OOC games soon. This isn't the old Big East where we'll have so many opportunities in conference to pad our resume (also for the good of the conference rep). Really need to beat New Mexico now and and ideally ASU again in the Wooden tourney. A Wisconsin win would make everything better and the fan base forget.

I actually was just thinking about this very subject before I logged onto Scoop a couple minutes ago.

I am not a knee-jerk-reaction type, nor am I a guy who derives self-worth from the success of a sports team. I rarely feel super-down even after a horrible loss, such as Ohio State, because there's a lot more to life. And yet, I definitely want Marquette to win and feel better when we do.

So how do I feel this morning after watching that game and getting a good night of sleep?

I feel cautiously optimistic. So much improvement is still needed, and it is legitimate to wonder if we really can expect similar performances from the likes of Derrick Wilson and Jake Thomas or if they were one-hit wonders last night. Still, things most of us have been clamoring for happened. For long stretches, we actually looked like a very good basketball team. Very encouraging.

It's obvious that this is not going to be an easy season. So I plan to try very hard to enjoy the little things. And really, when we look back on this season in April, last night might have proven to be a big thing -- a collective light bulb going on and a portent of good things to come. Here's hoping.

We're going to learn a lot about this team before our lads head to Omaha on New Year's Eve. And really, that's what November and December are for.

Im not really upset but I feel like we should be.
It stinks that I am not because that means expectations are down.

Feeling pretty positive after reflecting. Super comeback and these guys showed a lot of poise and determination. Character showed  they're competitors
