Title: OT: DePaul travels north to the Cell and beats UWM
Post by: The Lens on November 19, 2013, 09:57:19 PM
No Victory for Victor E.

DePaul is 3-1.  They also beat Wright State.  Is it bad that I see DePaul beat Wright State and I am impressed?

Certainly better than when they lost at home to UWM two years ago.  Thinks are looking up (relatively).

My son and I went to the game last night. I have always been telling him what a great place the "Milwaukee Arena" is to watch a game.

Strolled in about 5 minutes late and bought 2 $14 seats. Great seats about the free throw line and 12 rows up.

My son loved the place.

It was too quiet, but we had a great time. They had a slushy bar, a popcorn bar an ice cream bar...

UWM has a pretty good team. They were tied at halftime thanks to forcing the ball inside and getting baskets or fouls followed by a bunch of threes based on good ball rotation. The second half they relied on the 3 a little too much...although Kyle Kelm had a real nice second half. They were getting Depaul in foul trouble in the first half based on good ball movement and feeding the post. In the second half they were less patient and pulled the trigger a little early.

Depaul looked pretty good. Billy Garrett is real composed and makes some real interesting feeds. Lots of underhand handoffs to bigs after penetration. Also an unorthodox bounce pass to the post. Cleveland Melvin is a stud. The guy was ice in late shot clock situations. Young also was very good. The guy with dreads (can't remember his name) was real smooth with his shot too. Seemed like UWM would play 33 seconds of great defense and then Depaul would hit a tough shot. Melvin had one turn around jumper in the middle of the lane that looked like he was shooting down. The backup point guard (McKenzie) had a tip dunk that should have been on "The 1" (or Sportcenter's Top 10). Just had to get Fox in there. Depaul is not a pushover. Good team play.

Through last night's games, the Big East only has 5 losses:
3 to ranked teams (GU v. Oregon, SJU v. UW, MU v. OSU)
1 on the road (SHU v. Mercer, 2OT)
1 at home (DePaul v. Southern Miss--who is expected to be at the top of CUSA).

All told--pretty good shape for the conference at this point.  LiveRPI currently has us as the 2nd best conference, and forecast as #2.

Big games coming up for the conference this weekend: Providence v. Vandy in Virgin Islands (Paradise Jam, winner gets LaSalle or Morgan St.), Seton Hall v. Oklahoma in NY (Coaches v. Cancer, winner gets #1 MSU or Va.Tech).  And, of course, MU v. ASU on Monday, along w/ DePaul v. Wichita St.

Be nice to see the conference sweep through most of the games this weekend into the rest of the holiday tournaments next week.

This really took me back. I am 50 now and my parents took me to tons of games when I was a kid. I can remember Senator Proxmire shaking hands, Clapper clapping the whole game in front of the clock, "Give 'em hell Al", barely ever losing a home game, stairs up to the bathroom... Lots of fun.

The Arena is such a better place to watch hoops than the BC. Not even close. But I fully understand the $$$motivation$$$ behind the move.

Wright State is no push over this year. They returned over 90% of their scoring to a team who was late three pointer away from being in the big Dance. They will bowl over the Horizon league this year.

The start of non-con has been really good for the Big East. The only "bad" loss was ours to Ohio State and that's only because of our final score. We played half of the game really well.

I think the B1G is actually underrated this year.  Michigan loss hurt them, but they are ahead of the pack. ACC is having a horrible OOC...and wait till the new parity and long travel catches up with them.

Speaking of ratings...remind me why Memphis keeps getting a bump?  They were down 30 early in the 2nd half last night....Pastner is 0-12 lifetime against ranked teams.  Joke.

I enjoy the Arena move than the BC.
