Why do bureaucrats in Indianapolis think they can change 40 years of officials looking the other way in one season? Absolutely the worst game I have witnessed at the BC, and there have been many. Fans don't come to see officials blow their whistles, NCAA. I give this initiative one more weekend until TV tells the NCAA to tell the refs to stand down. Idiotic.

I agree though I doubt the iconoclasts in Indy will see it the same way

The NCAA is a governing body of member institutions. The membership made the changes, they are the ones that voted through the various rules committees to make the changes. The NCAA does what the membership wants.
Some of those fouls were questionable. If you call something on one end, why not call it on the other? But enjoy that 30 point victory because most of the fans underestimated us anyway.

Yes as enacted by administrators in Indy with their directives. These points of emphasis have been technically fouls for years...so the brain trust decides to go all out. Thanks...most free throws ever with the fewest shots ever in a modern day MU game. Simply unwatchable.

As noted in other posts, it was good to see that MU understood the new rules well and played within them better than pretty much any other team this weekend. Well done to the coaching staff, because in previous years, MU relied heavily on handchecks and impeding cutters - as did most teams, but with Marquette's size it's even easier to do... so now it's harder to NOT do it.

I think that Dr. Blackheart hit closer to the mark calling them bureaucrats. If they could get past their umbrage at being called iconoclasts, they would probably feel a secret excitement from considering that they could really be such a thing.
In Pomeroy, Marquette leads the nation in free throw rate, one of the four factors. Its rate of 147.2 is significantly higher than 2nd place Sam Houston St. at 108.7, while the D1 average is 43.2. To put the ridiculous amount of fouls called into perspective, from 2003 until now, the #1 team in free throw rate was in the 50-54 range. That is 1.5 free throws yesterday for EVERY field goal attempt!
Last year's average national rate was 35.9 vs. 43.2 this year so far or a 20% increase in free throw rate early on. So a lot more free throws and dead balls and a lot less field goal attempts and running clocks.
With yesterday's 53 fouls and 69 free throws, that is a lot of dead time. By my rough estimate: 29 minutes spent on the foul calls (10 seconds per stoppage to reset and put ball in play) and to also then shoot (1.7 free throws per stoppage times 30 seconds to get players set, shoot, reset the ball, etc. per set). BORING!
