Some good analysis here, but I think Louisville might have the new rule back fire on them on the defensive end. I feel like they get away with murder in that full court press.
I think Louisville fouls constantly in that press. But make no mistake, we are a very physical defense and while the new rules will help us on offense, we will suffer foul trouble on the other end. Good thing we are deep.
Who will Gardner be able to guard without using his hands?

It may not make much of a difference. I thought Louisville's philosophy was always "the ref won't call all of them". So they might get a couple extra, but eventually the refs are going to stop calling the fouls
This article seems to focus only on the offensive side.
Benefits for MU.
Good for their offensive scheme.
More free throw attempts are a good thing as long as Otule and Derrick are not the ones going to the free throw line.
MU depth allows them to withstand foul trouble, except at point.
Detriments
Derrick Wilson uses his hands on defense and will often be in foul trouble.
Gardner cannot defend using just his feet.

True, but I still think the benefit on offense will grossly outweigh the potential disadvantage on defense. We've got plenty of depth on the wings, so no real issues there. In the paint, Otule isn't a physical defender at all, he's a swatter... so no real additional harm there; and as long as Gardner is going to the line every other possession, I'd be content with him playing defense with his arms straight up in the air from the time he crosses the timeline. The real disadvantage is going to be at the point, where Derrick isn't the most agile guy, but he's got the IQ to adjust... even if he has to yield to a cutter, at least he knows he's got big guys in the lane to back him up.
Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised to see MU bust out the zone much more often this year.
I see the rule change hurting us more than helping us. We've had no trouble getting to the free throw line in the past few years, so I don't really see this as much of an advantage. The big downside is our aggressive defensive style that will undoubtedly get us into some trouble early on while we adjust to the change.
I wouldn't be surprised to see Derrick get himself 4 or 5 fouls in the first few games because of his constant hand checking on defense. I don't think he's ever guarded anyone without giving them a forearm or hand check.
