There was a discussion on reddit the other day on what it would look like if the tourney champ held a title belt every year. Who would own it? What would the title fights be? The spreadsheets in the above link are the results of that research. Here's the quote from the guy that put it together:
QuoteMy starting point was the end of UCLA's 88-game win streak. There are some missing dates in the 1970s where all I could get were schedules and scores. I'd actually been keeping track of this before yesterday's post, ever since I saw the college football belt.
The first sheet shows every game since UCLA's streak where the title belt was up for grabs. The second sheet just shows the teams that actually won the belt and for how long they had it. The third sheet shows each team's record when holding or challenging for the belt.
I'll be happy to answer questions about the sheet, and if anyone knows where I can fill in some of the gaps, let me know.

Marquette held the belt for:7 days in 1996
11 days in 2012
2 days in 2013
Marquette's record is 7 & 10 in title matches compared to 3 & 11 for UW-Madison, 0-5 for UW-Milwaukee, 4-4 for UW-GB
BEast Records:
Georgetown 40-15
DePaul 40-20
St Johns 31-20
Nova 20-18
Butler 16-8
Seton Hall 16-20
Xavier 8-6
MU 7-10
Providence 2-12
Creighton 0-3
The first title defense for Louisville this season is this Saturday against College of Charleston!
Good to know we took the belt back for the BEast during our thrashing of Miami.
Cool, but shocking that the three teams we took it from were cincy, South Florida, and Miami
The real question is would all these teams have made weight for their match? I mean with Davante I'm not sure we would've
This was very fun to go through. Wasted most of my lunch hour. My brother-in-law played for the belt with Manhattan in 1983. How about Wisconsin holding it over the summer of 1979 because they beat Michigan State the last game of the season but did not make the tournament? Only way that could happen now is if Harvard beats somebody with the belt, then loses to another Ivy League team and doesn't play them again and Harvard wins the Ivy, or if a team is on probation. Fun to see some of the lesser programs that held the belt for a while as a result of an upset and then the belt staying within a conference for a while.
Ya, the belt went on a little bit of crazy run after the Championship in 2011. UCONN lost the belt to Harvard, who kept it for a couple games, only to lose it back to UCONN in a title belt rematch (who knew?), and then it switched hands with a half a dozen Big East teams before finally resting with Kentucky.
What's the most unexpected title match-up? Elon v. Georgia State? Lamar v. Samford? Duquesne v. Rhode Island? DePaul v. South Florida?
We were robbed of a nice 70's run by Utah state somehow getting the belt in 77. Way to go, 1977 washington team!
People still use Reddit?!

How weird is it that it managed to wind its way around to the defending national champion? That's an amazing stroke of luck.
As long as one of the 68 teams in the dance has the belt, the national champion will end up with it. Not that lucky.

Yep, it's actually way more lucky when it somehow ends up with a team that wins out their season without making the dance. It would have to be in a conference tournament that not every team gets a bid. CTWarrior explained it better up above :)

Or the old BEast where you theoretically win your last game and yet could miss the conference tournament. Imagine those 1-15 Depaul teams holding the belt ;D
