Title: Wilson for BE POY?
Post by: MUMountin on October 16, 2013, 11:29:39 AM
Quote1. Who could emerge as the top challenger to Creighton's Doug McDermott as Big East player of the year?
Andy Katz: Marquette's Jamil Wilson or Georgetown's Markel Starks should have monster seasons. They will have even more pressure on them to produce this year. McDermott will be tough to dislodge but I'll lean toward Wilson now as a possible challenger since the Golden Eagles could win the inaugural new Big East.

Interesting to see that Katz thinks that Jamil could have a POY-caliber season.  It seems like most in the press have focused on Gardner as MU's top player--or at least storyline.  I think Gardner is going to be great this year, especially if his conditioning and defense have improved enough to allow him to play more minutes.  But, if Katz is right here, and Jamil is the player that really breaks out this year, I think it could mean real special things for this team.  JWil has shown flashes of great talent, but has always seemed to struggle with consistency and being aggressive enough on offense.  I'd love it if Katz was right (and I don't think that often!).

Jamil fits the mold of the typical, breakout "Buzz/Marquette player" - Matthews, Butler, Lazar, Crowder, etc. Katz knows this and is expecting Jamil Wilson to be the next in that line.

If only because he gets more minutes, I fully expect J Wil to be our top scorer and rebounder this season.

That trailing three on the break is gonna be money for JWilson this year.  That said, I think MU has too many weapons for anyone to really stand out as BE POY this year. McDermott will put up huge numbers as the go-to guy. He will likely be POY by default like Harangody, regardless of whether Jamil (or anyone else) actually outplays him or not.

Based on the numbers McDermott will mostly likely put up

If Jamil is even able to get involved in the POY convo, that means we are having a special season.

I like Wilson as our best bet because he is our most versatile player. He can be a big impact guy on both ends of the floor and is our only real candidate to surpass 30 mpg. I also expect his usage to get quite a boost, whereas Gardner will probably have about the same usage as a year ago. They should be a great combination threat regardless, but I agree that Jamil may be the most likely to challenge McDermott from our team.

Gardner is probably the biggest storyline because hes an unusual type of player.  Very skilled big bodied guy who shoots free throws well.

Surpass 30 mpg?  Is he some type of hybrid vehicle?

All this said, McDermott will be really tough to beat. With the departures they had, he may have a shot at putting up 25/10. As long as they're a tourney team, that will be a good bet for national POY.
