Duke's team featured future NBAers:
Grant Hill
Cherokee Parks
Antonio Lang
Marquette's team featured future NBAers:
McIlvaine
McCaskill
Crawford
- Damon's 3rd foul IN THE FIRST HALF was HUGE
- 25:40 Newton perfects and executes the Duke flop
Love those unis
I would think this is very rare, possibly unique.
Nov 14,1990 Marquette loses to Duke 74-87. That was the first game in the Key, MacIlvaine & Logterman era.
March 24, 1994 Marquette losses to Duke 49-59. That was the last game in the Key, MacIlvaine and Logterman era. I doubt anyone else has started and finished their career against the same team.

Hey-o! (With a behind the back pass)
Huddled up in a McCormick dorm room watching on a 13" COLOR TV. Amazingly the picture quality of my laptop now is probably better.
Damon hitting that 3 to go up 9-0...I may have blacked out.
I was at that game and we had a chance. I was also MU-Duke game at Duke when those guys were freshmen and were blown off the court in their first game as Warriors. Unbelievable improvement in the four years and all deserve a ton of credit.
That game was torture. MU goes out to the early lead, but by about the 10 minute mark of the second half, I just had this feeling that Duke was pretty much in control.
Sultan
You are right on regarding the game. I think the 25 beers I had pregame had me a big believer in a win than I should have been. Still a great effort.
BTW, that game is when I started to despise Duke and their smarmy little prick fans chanting "Laverne and Shirley" near the end.
Stuck at the fire station, game not carried in my area, forced to listen to the game on the radio while working out between alarms. Frustrating on so many levels.
Only good thing about the result of this game was we didn't have to run/stumble from the dorms to the lake again.
PS - '15 Jaylen Key........

Well done. I remember he had a ridiculous behind the back pass against Nebraska? Half of Milwaukees jewish community was at the game.
How about the time we actually did beat them, Nov of 2006.

Yeah, that 2006 game was fun, too. But then, to borrow from Murf, Crean's teams were always better in November than March anyway.

Uhm, because the thread talks about almost beating Duke. Not sure if the thread starter is aware, but we have beaten Duke before.
Is it wrong to celebrate wins over great programs?

#1 Kentucky, #4 Pittsburgh, etc might disagree
One time in 9 years. But it was a fun ride.
My wife's birthday. I took her out for an early dinner and abandoned her to go to a sports bar to watch the game and could not fake a good mood when I got home. On a related note, my wife (an MU grad and enthusiastic ignorer of all things sports) is a saint.

We know, cheeks, you would rather have 8 years with 1 NCAA win sandwiching one glorious run versus 8 wins in 5 years with 3 consecutive 2nd weekend runs. Got it.
Loved Eford, but he was beyond brutal in that '94 game. Not one of KO's better strategic games either...subbing Key into the game so soon after his 2nd foul only to see the big man subsequently collect his 3rd midway thru the 1st half.

He started the thread because of the Youtube video of the game.
But then you had to grab the attention - like a drunk guy at a wedding taking the mic from the guy giving the toast to share stories of how you once screwed the bride.
I went to all the tourney games that year. 5 days in Tampa, golfing, watching preseason baseball, drinking beer, and oh yeah, KICKING KENTUCKY'S AZZ.
Anyone remember the guy winning drunkest Marquette fan for both weekends? We called him Mr. Cheesehead, as he wore the most beatup cheese headwear ever.
Good times, Not as fun as the Final Four, but it was a start.
If I had a dollar for every time a scooper unnecessarily provoked Chicos...

Exact wording of the banner:

Detroit W 87-45
Texas Tech W 87-72

We must have had same travel agent. Fun two weeks of ball.
That 2006-2007 Duke team we beat...ended up bounced in the 1st Round of the Tourney.
That 1994 Duke team we "almost" beat...ended up in the NCAA Final.
Glad we're comparing the two.

We were at a wedding in the UK where the drunk groom gave a toast thanking the bride's previous lovers for teaching her the tricks that made her the sexual animal she was. Her family is decidedly posh and not in any way pleased with their new son-in-law. The father of the bride was beet red and gritting his teeth. As one of the few Yanks in attendance I thought it was hilarious but for my wife's pinching me I would have stood and applauded.

Yeah - usually the drunk guy who grabs the mic starts off saying how much he loves the bride then segues into a rant about the great times he and the groom had and the girls they bonked before she came along.

Yes, I remember that game. jsglow left me at home with a terrible-two-year-old and a newborn to roadtrip down with his buds to watch the game and hang out at the team after-party (one of them knew one of the assistants pretty well).
He did bring me back a t-shirt.......I guess that was good gift since all of my other shirts were covered with spitup...

I was at that game my freshman year 1980 when we beat them for the 1st time. The game was played neutral court in Madison.

You may want to look up 'irony' in the dictionary.
Feb. 10, 1980: Marquette 80, Duke 77. One of my favorite games ever.
The game was held at the Dane County Coliseum in Madison because there was some kind of scheduling or TV conflict with the old Arena. Only the fans who REALLY wanted to be there made the trip. As anyone who has seen Badger hockey knows, Dane County is a great, loud place to watch a game. The place was rocking as MU built a lead and hung on against the Mike Gminski-Gene Banks Duke team.
Too much fun!

Yeah, now that you mention it, I think it might have been Al's first time broadcasting a Marquette game.
I didn't see the telecast because I was in the house. And after the game, I believe my friends and I might have quaffed a beverage or 20 in celebration!
So I hope I'm forgiven for not getting all misty-eyed regarding "The Time We Almost Beat Duke." Because I have great memories of the time we actually beat Duke!
Remember the time we almost beat Tennessee with Dale Ellis in the NCAA tournament?
1983...those were some warm ups. The Johnsons, Doc Rivers, the short shorts, enjoy

Hmmm, I vaguely remember beating Duke at the Dane County Coliseum, Madison, during Al's tenure..., was Gminski their big then? Hell of a fun atmosphere, packed house, hot as hell in there.

Nope, Al's first game broadcastin' was actually at MECCA. MU vs. UNLV on a Sunday afternoon. Some Einstein had Al perched in the bowels of the arena watchin' the game on a monitor while addin' color commentary.

Good call on Al being outcast that day. For some reason I thought he actually was out in the truck that day.

But it was a great game, one of the best atmospheres I've been part of for MU hoops.
