Title: Miller vs. Pierce?
Post by: jsglow on October 15, 2013, 11:59:15 AM
I'd be interested in everyone's thoughts regarding Miller vs. Pierce for the available 'big' slot.

1) Might we have a preference for Pierce and be simply hanging around for a few days in case he passes on Pitt following this weekend's visit?

2) Having just visited Boulder this past weekend, I can promise you that campus is absolutely beautiful.  That said, Miller went to town in early October and left without signing.  Of course, the same could be said about his official visit to MU.  Thoughts?

3) Maybe both kids slip away (their choice, God bless) and Buzz 'fills' the class with Shayok using any Spring transfer on a late bloomer/Juco big?

Anyway, I'm guessing we know by next week some time.

I think we will know by the end of this week where we stand with both Miller and Shayok.  I don't know anything...simply a guess.

Yeah...assuming Harris is still coming.

As a proud alum of both MU and Colorado, I can say that CU has become a definite recruiting threat under Tad Boyle.  As you mentioned, the campus and town are gorgeous, the weather is great, and Boyle is the real deal--I feel lucky to cheer for two programs that have great, young coaches.   He's already kept some of the top talent in Colorado recently (which was pretty much unheard of after the days of Chauncey Billups), and been able to have success both in CU's old Big 12 stomping grounds and now in California and Washington.

On a side note from recruiting, I'd love to see MU set up a home-and-home with CU in coming years.

Plus I can think of one thing you'd get suspended for here that you wouldn't in Colorado...

How can you be sure that there is an "available big" slot?

Pierce definitely strikes me as a project. He's got true size, but his athleticism seems limited. I'm not sure how well he would keep up with the rest of the team. But if he's committed to working through boot camp and getting faster, I'd love to have a guy like him in the post.

Miller I feel would be able to contribute almost instantly. He seems a lot more like Buzz's type of player. Quick for his size, blue collar, hard nosed, back to the basket type big. But he doesn't have Pierce's size. And you know what they say "you can't teach 7 foot"

As always, In Buzz I Trust.

I think Pierce is farther along physically then DG or CO was when they got to MU.

I'd be happy with either. We need a true 5 to play at least 10 mpg next year, and Stone needs someone to practice against the following year.

Only assuming willie as both our 5s complete their eligibility after this season.  Can Buzz work without a true 5, sure.

Yeah...assuming Harris is still coming.

Count me in the camp of people who doesn't expect Harris to step foot on campus next fall.  Two suspensions in two years (one of which for the entire season) just screams "red flags"...

Wishful thinking, but I'd love to see us pick up committments from BOTH...technically they don't play the same position.  Pierce is a project 5 and Miller is a big-bodied 4.

If we could add a 2, 3, 4, & 5 in 2014 and then follow it up with Stone and a PG in '15...we'd be sitting extremely pretty

Again, though...wishful thinking!

Very interesting question, if we are referring to the same 'thing'.  Even though it is legal in Colorado, is it still against NCAA regulations?

+1

I share those wishful thoughts, and I wish Harris all the best, whether that's with us or somewhere else...but I wouldn't be surprised if he does not show up in a Marquette Uniform next year.

I haven't bothered digging through that ginormous other thread about Harris, so I have no idea if anyone mentioned why he wasn't at Madness...

I don't think Harris would have anything to do with us taking both. My guess is we would take both regardless, the only thing that may speak to the Harris situation is if we took Miller, Pierce, and Shayok.

And if we're shooting for a "wishful thinking" PG, might as well just slot Matthews name in there ;)

But with no where near the scoring touch or hands that DG brought with him.

Probably since it's against Federal Law.

I rather have Charles Matthews, the SG from Chicago's St. Rita HS.

It's not "legal" in Colorado.

Nonetheless, it's against not only NCAA rules but the program's rules. There are manythings that student-athletes (and students in general) are not allowed to do that are legal. Laws don't trump an institution's rules.

I think how Matthews projects and his length, but he's a different year.
..................

As for the OP... Miller is a BIG dude. I mean BIG, muscular. He's also heading to his fifth year of high school and will mature even more with a bigger role.

At a minimum, he's a bruising forward who should be able to rebound (defensive) and defend the blocks. I think his "type" is something that MU is missing (to be clear, I like Steve Taylor A LOT! - Miller is a diff type of player) and he could be a solid addition.

Didn't Miller retire? Does Pierce still has eligibility left?

2) Having just visited Boulder this past weekend,

Any you didn't even give me a shout!?!  I'm not always responsive, but I do always try to respond.

To the original question, lets just take both.  I'm OK with that.
