Chicago restaurant garnishes burger with communion wafer, red wine sauce

CHICAGO (AP) -- A Chicago restaurant has cooked up a controversial burger of the month for October, garnishing it with an unconsecrated communion wafer and a red wine reduction sauce.
Kuma's Corner, a foodie destination with just a few tables, names its hamburgers after heavy metal bands. For October, the restaurant chose to name the burger after the Swedish band Ghost. Members of the band dress in religious robes and wear skeleton face makeup.
It's in poor taste, said Jeff Young of New Orleans who runs the blog Catholic Foodie.
"It's not, for us, the Eucharist," Young said. "However this wafer is a symbol. There's a cross on it. It's like taking a flag and burning a flag."
Luke Tobias, Kuma's Corner director of operations, said the restaurant never wanted to offend anyone. He said reaction has been a "mixed bag," but more positive than negative.
"There are people who are offended by it, but we're delighted to see that generally people seem to have a sense of humor," Tobias said.
The restaurant, which often plays loud heavy metal music, is a fan of Ghost, Tobias said. Young said he realizes that and knows Kuma's Corner didn't intentionally want to make anyone mad.
"The Ghost" burger is selling well, Tobias said, because customers are curious about it.
"Hopefully people will have a good time with it — that's certainly what we're trying to do," Tobias said.
obnoxious... not sure why any Catholic would be offended.... if it's not consecrated it's just bread and wine; who cares?
That's one way to look at it. But it's a religious symbol, plain and simple, regardless of it's current spiritual status, and putting it on a burger is meant to be outrageous and offensive for the purpose of generating attention.
They ain't doin' it for that unleavened bread taste.

Wait, so it was a sacrilege burning church incense when blasting the "Dark Side of the Moon" while blowing on the weed bubbler in my McCormick dorm room? Cripes...that was a mortal sin I thought I cleared with the recent legalization. Never thought about the "Incense to Hell" aspect.

Absolutely. Radical Islamists have declared war on modernity itself. And I cede your point on the similarities as far as civilians being used as targets, but I don't think the idea that the English were infidels who must accept the Pope or die was what those fighting for a united Ireland had in mind.

I think al Qaeda is far more of a political group than you seem to make the case for here. In fact, I think it's primarily a political group acting primarily on political ambitions. I think it uses Islam primarily as a recruiting tool and as justification for its actions. Bin Laden didn't mind allying himself with us infidels when he was fighting the Soviets, and didn't turn against the U.S. until we exerted our influence and established a permanent presence in Saudi Arabia - which, for all intents, killed his ambitions of overthrowing the royal family and establishing himself as leader of the kingdom (and its oil).
Don't get me wrong - his ideal government was a theocracy, but his goals had more to do with seizing territory and authority than spreading a faith.
Catholics are better at taking a joke than Al Queda.
I'm good with that.
It's out of line and rude. I won't eat there and I will pray for their sins.

They are most definitely political. I just give less legitimacy to a group seeking a worldwide caliphate than I do one seeking a united Ireland or a Palestinian state.

Then February rolls around, and of course black history month. Why isn't there white history month? Or Asian history month? Or german history month? You know why? LIBERALS AND THE MEDIA! Then of course the Spring rolls around, and some random school in boo foo Kansas cancels an Easter Egg hunt, because of LIBERAL NAZI SOCIALISTS believe in separation of church and state, and the school is forced to have a Spring fuckin' jamboree instead of the Easter bunny. Then of course the early summer, FLAG WAVING TIME KIDDOS! Memorial day and the 4th of July in the same 5 weeks? WEEEEEE! Get those flag pins out, and "these colors don't run" 9/11 magnets for your cars.

Don't forget Grandma won't get her Social Security check, the debt ceiling is critical now (somehow wasn't in the 2000's), deficits don't matter now (but sure did 10 years ago), 9-11 was an inside job, etc.

And, for anybody that didn't read the article, the restaurant regularly does burgers that are tribute to their favorite bands. In this case, the band is "Ghost" from Sweden. (google "ghost" to see what they wear on stage).
So, while I won't excuse the restaurant completely, I don't think they are out specifically trying to pick on Catholics and created this burger.

Your inventing reasons to argue, Chico's. Who said anything about phone polls being suspect?
The question of those particular polls' validity stem from the fact they allowed for self-identification as Native American and are a decade old. I doubt many people would point to a 2002 poll to show current public opinion on the war in Afghanistan or same-sex marriage, but apparently it's totes legit when it comes to this nickname.
But the fact remains, until we conduct a poll of Catholics, there's no true way of knowing whether this is an offensive lunch item or not. That, I've learned here from you, is the correct way to determine whether or not offense is legitimate.

If I interpreted your comments incorrectly, I apologize. I took them as the time period (10 years ago) and the tactic (phone poll) are now questionable. I believe you said something close to that in the other thread where you didn't care for the "process" of how the questions were asked or whatever it was....basically concern with the validity. If that wasn't you, my bad.
I think what you should have learned from me is that there will ALWAYS be someone complaining about this stuff, pretending to be outraged or often actually outraged. And there will be people that have no skin in the game (pun intended) that will be outraged on behalf of others that they feel should be outraged. It's a business these days, to out outrage someone. That would have been my takeaway. The guy runs a private restaurant, if he wants to put a Eucharist on the burger and take a dump on it, that is his choice. If people don't like it, they won't buy it or visit the place. Hell, he can serve a crucifix in a jar while he is at it. The other takeaway should be, if the shoes were reversed and this was done against another religion, the OUTRAGE MACHINE would be on tilt from the press.

I think the evidence is there, one just needs to pay attention to the media and the outrage machine. It's not theoretical at all in my opinion. Look at the stories about a Koran being destroyed vs a bible destroyed. Are they the same? Are they treated the same? Is the outrage level the same? Just one example, but there are so many. Certain things are allowed and will not be reported on. Other things in the same ballpark will not only be reported, it will rule the day(s) of outrage and pontificating because that's the agenda. But, constantly stomping around and rolling your eyes about it isn't really going to change anything, and doesn't really serve a purpose.

Ah yes, when in doubt throw out the racist card or the age card or the gender card. "You couldn't possibly understand cuz you are a guy, you are white..you are over 40....blah blah blah".
That's when you know the argument is over. :D
As for ignoring it, pretty tough when it bombards you. Secondly, I like to be informed, even if that means sifting through the BS along the way. You can't go hide in a cave, but you can certainly listen, watch, read what is out there and then just apply common sense to what is palpable crap. Quite easy.

The world is filled with hypocrisy, I get it. Politicians are the worst. I TOTALLY get that.
But, constantly stomping around and rolling your eyes about it isn't really going to change anything, and doesn't really serve a purpose.
The "Catholic" vs "Muslim" burger thing is EXACTLY theoretical. It's NOT real. It never happened. Yet, you are already "outraged" about the "outrage".
If I wanted to walk around pissed at the world, I could do it. I'm certain I could find enough reasons... but why would I?
I assure you, I am not outraged at all over the Catholic burger thing. I've been chuckling the whole time. That's one of the problems with the written word, you can't interpret tone, mood, inflection, satire, etc.
As I said before, I find in entertaining. No stomping, no huffing....entertaining. You are right about politicians and politics in general. I have some very very liberal friends and very very conservative friends. It is funny interacting with them. One of my very liberal friends just yesterday sent me something on Facebook about California GOP apparently making some buttons up that were less than flattering about Hillary Clinton and he was full of rage. I asked him if he was full of rage when the state Democrat communication chair wished the kids of an aide to Ted Cruz kids would get a disease and die. That's the kind of stuff that makes me laugh and I enjoy throwing a bucket of water on their poutrage. I'll do the same to my conservative friends. Or my Dodger friends that get all whiney about how terrible Giants fans were and I have to remind them going to a Dodger game can lead to death or paralysis.
People view things through such a small funnel these days...they gravitate toward news that fits their views and so they are force fed only one side of the story and they totally ignore or completely are uninformed what else is out there. They are almost blown away when what they were outraged by is also being done by their side that when presented with the evidence they are stupified. Kind of funny, or sad....but that's how we consume info today. Tailored, narrow, biased, edited, and heavily shaped because those delivering it would rather you not know the complete story. I look forward to a day when the press becomes the press again.

I didn't say ANYTHING racist, anti-age, or anti-gender - I happen to be a white male over 50.
I was referencing that white men are the right's last demographic.

Context matters...in real life you have to be smarter than what you display on this website.
No, spin matters for you and you love their spin. I get the "excuse" he is using saying it was a political vote back then, nuanced. That's nice and sweet. Guess what, today's votes are political as well, how soon they all forget. You just don't like them and neither does he. Maybe he should have voted present back then, but in a moment of rarity he thought it important enough to take a stand for which he now regrets (again, how sweet). Well, guess what, nuance it all you want, but that's why they have you speak into the mic and say AYE or NAY and they put that vote next to your name and that vote is preserved forever. Guess what, they keep score.
Makes you wonder, ATL, if just the vote was nuanced or his words also. I'd love to hear that spin from you.
"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America's debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a Sign that the US Government cannot pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government's reckless fiscal policies. ...Increasing America's debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that 'the buck stops here'. Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and Grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better."LOL. Apparently the words have an expiration date.
Surely, you are smarter than this in real life to understand that some of these things come back to bite people in the arse. You're either saying he and others were a-holes 6 years ago and voted that way just to be a-holes to "stand on principle" and to nuance, or you're saying they were dead wrong and all of a sudden they are right now and those that are voting against it now are somehow NOT standing on their principles (because, their principles don't count). See the hyprocisy here ATL? It's ok to be principled, nuanced, etc for one side, but not the other. How quaint. Guess what, it goes both ways, too. In the 2000's, the GOP cared not one bit about the deficit and spent and borrowed and spent. Same for the 1980's. Now, they suddenly care. Hypocrites all, both sides.

White Guy's Lament.......
I was referencing the typical response (not yours directly) on the other examples. Get off my lawn, you're just an old white guy that doesn't understand. You can't speak for women's issues, you're just an old white guy. Blah blah. I just find it funny as that is a standard response these days. Of course, if someone were to say to a female candidate that she doesn't speak for men's issues all hell would break lose, yet people get a free pass when they say men can't speak about women's issues? Hilarity.

Not going to bother even reading this, for surely it is 100% typical Chicos "I talk the most and am the loudest so therefore I am correct" rubbish.
What's occurring today is not even in the same universe as what occurred back then and you know it.

Gee Chicos, where are the quotes of condemnation from the dopes currently running the House about raising the debt ceiling back then? Oh, I forgot, they voted multiple times to raise the debt ceiling when W was in charge with no problems whatsoever. You are so enamored with the concept of hypocrisy, but I guess only when it doesn't conflict with your own ideology. Talk about having your head in the sand.
As for your current misdirection, whatever was said 6 or 8 years ago is completely irrelevant to the current situation. You will grasp at any straw to try to defend the unprecedented and utterly indefensible actions currently being taken by the wackjobs you undoubtedly support.
If people have any f*cking sense, they'll be gone in a little over a year and this country can start to address the MANY serious issues it faces.
That's pretty funny ATL. Especially that SINCE then, the debt had grown a crapload more, the deficits at record levels, etc. You can paint it as a hit against who was there, but it has only gotten worse. I yearn for the days of ONLY $10 trillion in debt, not $16.879 trillion. I yearn for the days when debt to GDP was 84% under that "idiot", where today it is at 102.7%. Head firmly in sand.
So try to take your donkey undies off for one second and simply look at the words he said. What did he say that was right then that is wrong today? His words. How has the situation not gotten even worse and what he said then is even MORE applicable today than it was then. What he said then was exactly true, but it was politically convenient for him to say it, now when the SAME situation (only worse) exists with the deficit the debt, he goes the other way. Cute.
WAIT! Weren't we promised that raising the debt ceiling won't cause our debt to increase?

Then expound on your point. You seemed to be saying that the IRA's terrorist actions were justified due to an occupation by a foreign power. Did I misread that?
Seriously, if you want people to understand your point....type...more...clearly.

Wait, are you telling us that politicians will say anything to get elected? Wow, that massive intellect of yours is truly something to behold. ::) Of course, this goes both ways but you latch on to a 6+ year old statement as if that has any relevancy today. Rush must have been talking about this recently to divert attention from the mess being created by his beloved.
Anyway, that's not a conversation worth having, but it seems to be the only one you want to have (shocking).
While the increase in the nations debt is alarming, what's even more alarming is that one small minority of one party in one part of the govt seems to think they can do an end-around on the constitution to change laws they don't like, but that they can't defeat through the constitutionally-mandated electoral and legislative processes. A conversation worth having is what this, if allowed to occur, would do to our system of goverment.
These (the wafer & the President's latest 180) are both affronts on the Catholic religion and all things Holy. Should MU require students be (a) Catholic or (b) sign a "Sin waiver" that apologizes for their shortcomings and promises to never viciously attack the Church as so many in this thread have?
I think yes. Whoever the new MU president is must feel the same way.
This thread is terrible.

I'm all for people being "well informed", but maybe tune out once in a while?
It seems like your political views are bleeding into everything you do, and it constantly comes up on a basketball message board.
Just my opinion.
Personal note: My brother used to be "well informed", and grew quite disenchanted with life. When he finally learned to tune out the junk, and concentrate on what he was in control of, he was much happier... AND we didn't have to listen to his mini-rants at family functions (after 6 or 7 drinks of course).
