Trey Couch, 12, joins men's hoops program

Later today Chris Mack will announce the signing of Trey Couch, the youngest prospect ever to ink a National Letter of Intent at Xavier.

Couch, 12, lives in Liberty Twp. and has Cerebellar Degeneration, a neurodegenerative disease that has no cure. He was diagnosed in 2010.

Per Xavier's release:

The illness greatly impacts the cerebellum, the area that controls coordination and balance, and over time it will lead to muscle deterioration throughout his body. There has been very little research done on Cerebellar Degeneration and with that, there is no strict protocol to follow in treating it. Instead, Trey and his team of doctors are constantly playing defense, addressing the symptoms and health challenges as they present themselves. Though it has been very frustrating to lose his physical strength and coordination, as part of the Xavier Basketball team he will be given the opportunity that he once could only have dreamed of – to be a true member of a Division I men's basketball team.

Couch is joining the Xavier family via Team IMPACT. Its mission is to improve the quality of life for children facing life-threatening and chronic illnesses by establishing and expanding vibrant team-based support networks.

Trey and his parents, Gina and Greg, will be at Cintas Center this afternoon.

Chicago Steel did the same thing.

The Chicago Steel organization has given Jack Jablonski a roster spot for the 2013-14 USHL season. The former Benilde St. Margaret's (St. Louis Park, MN) High School player who was paralyzed on the ice was drafted by the team in the 2013 USHL Draft.

Doctors believe that Jablonski will never walk again, but Jablonski's motto on his personal twitter account shows his resolve. It reads "Living to prove the doctors wrong."

It is another classy move by the Chicago Steel. Not only is it a feel good story, but also hopefully it will continue to bring awareness to the need to find a cure for spinal cord injuries.

More information on Jack Jablonski's foundation can be found here, and if you want to follow him on twitter, it's @Jabs_13.

I've lived in Chicago 5 years and have never even heard of the Chicago Steel.

EDIT: wasn't taking away from the story, its an awesome gesture. Just was surprised to learn there was such a team.

Jake played for the Steel.  Not sure about Dean.  They both played for Michigan State.  Their Dad had some fun with the bartenders at Alary's in St Paul when the World Hockey Championships were in town.
