Title: Rumor on Orangebloods.com- Deloss Dodds to step down
Post by: texaswarrior74 on September 13, 2013, 04:45:24 PM
UT is denying it but implicit message is he doesn't want to fire Mack or Barnes so he steps down and the new guy can fire them and then hire his own coaches...where there's smoke....

Not trying to throw gas on the MUscoop fire but looks like Barnes' days really are numbered...

Any chance this thread will de-generate to same old Buzz-to Texas thing? :-\

De-generate? It was already at that level with the original post. Why else would anyone on here care about Texas basketball in the middle of September?

If true, it would be very important because Dodds is the guy who hired Barnes and Mack...he is their staunch defender.  Dodds is the kingmaker and wields ENORMOUS power.  Arguably the most powerful AD in college sports, certainly top 3.  If rumor is true, Mack and Barnes are a lot more nervous today than yesterday.

Time for an update, Groce to Texas.  He makes a lot more sense than almost everyone mentioned in the second article, and Illinois has a poor record of holding onto its coaches when someone else really wants them.

If Barnes gets canned it will be interesting to see how 'big' the UT job is viewed.  There is the possibility that Texas tries to go bigger than Buzz.  If they're going to throw enough money out there to get Buzz I'd imagine they'll take a stab at guys 'bigger' than Buzz.

Who would you consider to be 'bigger' than Buzz that would leave their current program for Texas?

Based on their history - Weltlich, Penders, Barnes - it doesn't appear they ever were a player for the top coaches.

But, then, I think those were all hired by Dodds. If a new guy takes over as AD - who knows?

I guess I would ask the same question of MU.  Over our history, have we ever hired a top coach?  I would say no.  We hired assistants or others that did well, but never had a big time coach come to MU that was big time elsewhere.

I would expect Texas to go hard after Miller, Buzz, Pastner if they decide to make a change.  Back in the day, they weren't the athletic program they are today.  The old SWC was very different than the Big 12...certainly a lot of money but not proportionally the same to what they are doing today.  It's amazing how much their budget has exploded in the last 20 years, now spending more than $160M + a year on athletics.   In the early 90's, they were spending less than $20M.

Why would Texas go after buzz pasner and miller?  Why not target an A+ lister?

Pastner's contract has some "unique" dollar amounts. Another one that's been under-reported. He's got it quite nice at Memphis. Easy to throw out his name, but you should familiarize yourself with the contract first.

Because an A+ guy isn't going to leave Duke, KU, UK, MSU, etc to take that job.  Someone at Memphis or MU...might.  I think Miller is a stretch, he has a good thing at Arizona, but we'll see how much money Texas throws around....if it even gets to this.

Hopefully Barnes turns it around, but some of the predictions this year are looking really bad for them.

Obviously football is #1 at Texas and it looks like there are big problems there. Does BB get pushed to the back burner? Unless there is a big turnaround, a football coach may be priority #1. And they will go after a big-time guy there.

With the amount of money there, they can do both.  Last year alone they brought in $11.8M incremental revenue from the previous year.  They will do something similar this year with additional television carriers forced to take Longhorn Network.  DISH is likely the next one as their ESPN deal expires in 17 days and ESPN clearly has told them (as they have told us and everyone else), you want ESPN you MUST carry Longhorn Network.  The brinks trucks of money going to UT is pretty staggering.
