Title: At All Costs - Life Inside AAU Basketball
Post by: Skatastrophy on September 06, 2013, 10:19:02 AM
We've talked about, on this board, how big of an impact AAU ball has had on the recruiting game. This movie looks like it'll provide a gritty look inside the recruiting game, the players, and the money behind it all.

Gotta feel for these kids having to deal with all of this crap at such a young age.

Feel for these kids who are highly coveted D-1 recruits?  Not really.

So much hyperbole in that trailer. "The moment you let up, you're gonna get your throat slit." Dad, you need to get a grip.

What could possibly go wrong with this mentality and atmosphere?     :-\

Yeah, and that is part of the problem.  There is no need for these guys to go everywhere, every weekend.  You can let your kid be a kid and they will still get plenty of exposure.

It would be interesting to see how many former AAU players would look upon their experience fondly.  My son played for a couple summers, mostly with D2 and D3 prospects, and loved it.  Very different vibe than the D1 level though.

Blah. Most tournaments and teams have players of all sorts. A couple D1 guys, a bunch of lower level prospects or guys that won't play in college.

I played 10 years ago and loved it, but we only travelled regionally and it wasn't nearly at the level it is at today.

Has anyone read 'Play Their Hearts Out"?  If this movie trailer interests you I highly recommend the book.

It's one thing if the kid wants to pursue it, travel every weekend, etc., but when it becomes the parents forcing them to then it's an issue I think.

Gabe York in that video, did not really do to good at AZ last year, did he make the right choice or was MU lucky he did not take the scholarship.  Maybe it went to JaJuan
Johnson this year, see who got the best player, stay tuned.

Is that really a symptom of the AAU leagues? I'm pretty sure these parents will still be grade-A jackasses if it was just high school teams.

Oh awesome, Coaches that cuss, loudmouth parents, and gansta rapper 'The Game'. It's no wonder Buzz does well recruiting, probably the first sane person the kid has faced since starting AAU basketball.

See some events I was at... don't see myself in there though.

I was standing on the baseline for this one, though:
