Maybe I should clarify to say, whose *face* is conspicuously absent?

That would be a rather ironic editorial choice.
Not on the team. Not in the NBA. It would be strange if he were there.

He's in the picture where they're lifting up the trophy. But you see the back of Vander's head.
Don't think there is any intentional omission of Van...and don't see a reason to speculate/conspiracy theory...

Not a huge fan of this tradition. A cup of coffee in the MBA gets u a banner.
I'd be better if banners went to 1st round picks...or lottery picks only.

This is the Al, not the BC. Its not like this is getting advertised to the world at large. The whole point is just to show potential recruits that MU can be a stepping stone to the league. You need a certain number of guys on banners to get the proper effect.

I agree, I know it seems like passing out participation trophies to those who signed and never played in the NBA (Mcneal) but the point is we need to have a lot of names and more recent ones makes us look even better
It's a wall in the practice gym.
And you really don't see a difference in getting a participation trophy and making the NBA???

Yeah. It has to do with what a player did in college, not the nba. If a player is a lottery pick, odds are good he had a strong college career. If he's a bust in the nba, it's irrelevant.

So what if it's a wall at a practice gym? Kids who are 17 or 18 years old would buy into that like crazy. It gives a list they can relate to as MU students and try to aspire to as MU greats.
Huge accomplishment yes, but at that level getting your name on a wall after a handful of games or just making a roster seems like what would be a participation trophy to average people.

So we should only have two banners? Try showing that to a recruit and bragging about how many people we get to the NBA

I have no problem putting them up in the BC or the practice facility. If that helps sell the program and gets kids excited, by all means. If Duke and UNC and others can hang NIT banners, NIT participant banners, banners for just getting to the NCAA, banners for winning other tournaments, fine by me. God forbid we celebrate achievement. And for the record, there were people pissed off for having other tournament banners in the practice facility as well, let alone the BC.

If they were hanging in NBA arenas or practice facilities, it would be like handing out participation trophies...a token to those who barely made it. But these aren't in NBA arenas, they are in Marquette's facility. And the individuals featured on the banners are the highest achieving players from the Marquette program. They're the select few who get a chance to be associated with the NBA...even if only on a very limited basis. They've achieved something that everyone who walks through those doors aspires to, and they absolutely deserve the recognition. That is no participation trophy.
If a player on an NBA team makes the all-star team, do you think there's anything wrong with the team recognizing that achievement? Even if he's the last man off the bench? Or would that be just like giving him a participation trophy? If you achieve something that only a select few from your team achieve, then recognition is appropriate.

Says who? The team is in control of putting up the banners and they'll recognize the players that they think appropriate. It would seem that they think "it has to do with" being affiliated with an NBA team.

Isn't this what retired jerseys/numbers are for?
On top of that, chances are a lottery pick probably didn't have a strong college career. They probably had a strong season or two. Not many lottery picks make it to their junior/senior season.

I respectfully disagree it to me comes off as "well congrats you made it here's your name on the wall we don't care how you did there as long as you participated". I made national golden gloves ok, did I get my name on the wall of the gym? No, I got it on the wall for being a finalist. And in the al with the names I agree for recruiting we should have them all up but there's a few names I'd take down if we were a super elite program.

I think people are starting to confuse the giant "Recent MU players who have made it to the NBA" graphics with the small "every MU player to ever be on an NBA roster" pennants.
