Title: Quentin Snider Offer
Post by: TempoFree on August 02, 2013, 09:41:26 AM
http://www.courier-journal.com/article/20130801/SPORTS11/308010119/Quentin-Snider-newly-available-hot-basketball-recruiting-prospect-flooded-calls-texts

As of about 8 p.m. Thursday, Scott Snider still had about 10 voice mail messages to listen to, but he said he and his son had received more than 60 combined calls and texts from about 25-30 schools, including five — Minnesota, West Virginia, Connecticut, Marquette and Illinois — that made immediate scholarship offers.

Saw the decommitment on twitter yesterday (or the day before) and like minutes later heard Minnesota offered.  Didn't think we were in the mix for him, but sounds like the article states otherwise.

I say if you have a chance to get a top 35 player, go for it!

The article mentioned that Indiana invited him out for an unofficial visit to Bloomington. What is the difference between an unofficial and an official visit? Is it just who pays?

I believe so, and each school is only allowed a few official visits.

He wants immediate playing time.  Don't think that will happen at MU.

certainly won't happen at Indiana, where Tommy had as of at the end of the season 14 or 15 on this season's roster.

Yep--we need more PG's. You can never have enough.

I agree, but you never know. I could see Duane being turned into a 2 guard. And some pegged JJJ as a potential one and done so we may need more guards.

Accurate. Had a pretty sweet doo too. Not quite the vag cut the Tanned One donned, but one of it's biggest rivals.

How does UCLA lose recruits?

Those cats are really losing out on a sweet campus, beautiful weather, a new arena, and lots of love.

My guess is because they're horribly outfitted by Adidas.

I have to think negative recruiting and arrogance hurts them. It has to be easy for opposing coaches to point out that they weren't what they once were, and canning Howland would make it tough for recruits to trust that the coach they commit to will be there when they graduate.

Or maybe they just cut payroll since the days of Wooden...

Nah - yet another reason why their contract with Alford was smart.

As I recall, it keeps Alford from leaving. Didn't realize it went both ways...just looked it up and see it does thru 2016 (at least at the $10M level).

The termination fees are mirrored. This is very rare in college basketball coaching contracts.

It's a rare contract in that it actually has some meaning. (http://latenighthoops.com/parrish-ucla-alford/#.UiDRSDakq8w) The two parties are showing far more commitment than is usually seen.

And far different from the often misreported contract b/w Crean and Indiana (http://latenighthoops.com/crean-buyout/#.UiDRnDakq8w).

Flying southwest everywhere probably doesn't help.  Not a huge reason but I have to imagine there are some strange reactions when recruits hear that I'm comparison to a lot of other schools.

Damn! Groce is really picking it up recruiting wise.  I guess he's not missing Issac Chew much.

Yup.  He was on the list of a few of us back before Buzz was hired (before he even became a head coach in the MAC and proved himself).  He's going to continue to do well it would seem.

Nice haul for Groce. He stepped into a good situation last year - veteran group of under-performers who shot and defended the 3 terribly in 2011-12. Looked like a bubble team heading into the season and made the tourney (even though some thought they had little chance before the season began).

This year is tough. Bertrand could be excellent.. Abrams, Egwu, etc could step up. But, I think this could be a bumpy road. With the Big Ten being what it is this year, though, there are 1 or 2 of 4 teams that could* step up to get a 7th and 8th bid out of the conference. Illinois could be one of 'em.

Gotta still see where he's at ~after year 4 / how things project into year 5 before getting a good feel for what he's doing with the program... but, looking strong right now.

Already received a pay raise (via amendment process).

I think they are just on the other side of the bubble this year. Big 10 is tough and Illinois is losing 63% of their offense from last season. That's tough to replace. But they will be back in the tourney easily the following year. Groce has a great crop of frosh for 2013 and is off to a good start for 2014
