Coming on Thursday, some significant, per Lunardi.
Committee will try to true seed from 1-68. Most interesting news that was explored (this is all per Katz) is that the committee investigated making basketball a one semester sport. It was deemed not possible, there was no way to squeeze an entire season in from Jan-April.
Does true seeding mean that they're finally getting rid of conference auto-bids?

Good. What a dumb idea that is.

I doubt it. Why would they do that? Conference auto bids exist in every sport at every level where the NCAA supports a championship. It's part of what makes the tournament fun.

Huh? Selection and seeding are two different things.
Finally!
Dayton can get into the Dance and win the whole thing!!!

No, it just means making a 1-68 list and slotting 1-4 as 1s, 5-8 as 2s, etc., and letting everything fall wherever it does. First round rematches? Oh well. Only concession they would make would be adjusting for BYU being unable to play on Sunday.
I hope it does away with pods, which are designed to get the top 4 seeds close to home. Why should a Duke fan not have to pay to go to California to watch his team play?

Agree completely. Part of the fun of going to tournament game should be seeing teams you normally don't, not stacking homecourt advantage for the best teams in the country.
Wonder if this will allow them to rank teams throughout the season. Could release a weekly ranking so teams know where they stand. Would make the committee's life easier at the end of the year as well, as they are merely tweaking the list instead of starting from scratch.

First of all, I think it would make it much more difficult during the season for the committee.
Second, I think it could cause even more controversy toward the end of the season. Let's say you have two teams, team one the "last team in" and team two the "first team out," who both lose in their conference semifinals. Yet because of an RPI difference in their quarterfinal game, team two jumps over team one.
That is going to cause much more controversy than simply unveiling the bracket with team two in the tournament. Sometime a little mystery is a good thing.

I doubt it since the pod system allows the NCAA to maximize revenue.

Agreed. They already have the advantage of playing the "worst" teams in the field. Why give them another advantage by allowing them to play essentially a home game?
I realize it's a ticket sales/money issue and will likely never change because of that, but a guy can dream, right?

Given how writers have described the process of creating the 1-68 list from the mock selection event that they do every year, this would be functionally impossible.
It goes something to the effect of: Everyone names their top 10 teams, then they take the teams everyone agrees on, then they seed those teams, and then repeat the process.
Well this is certainly a dud.

Essentially they tweaked them to allow for the possibility for conference match-ups in the second (third) round should those teams only have played each other once during the year.
So basically, they changed the rules so that the avoidable violations they made to their own rules the past few years, such as MU/Syracuse and UConn/Cincy in 2011, both of which could have been avoided until the Sweet 16, are no longer violations? Lame.
Realistically, now that the top conferences are all bigger, (ie. they have 3 golden age big easts now instead of 1) they are being proactive about the matchups now that mid majors will have less crumbs to snatch. Especially since most of the mid major power house programs are in the Big East or AAC now.

I found the Marquette mention interesting. Turns out we should have been a 6 seed back in 2007. Maybe we wouldn't have gotten embarrassed in the first round if these principles had been in place back then

I had successfully removed this game from my memory. Now its back.
ALSO, the other two line move was with BYU in 2012, which just so happened to be when MU played them too...I remember thinking how terrible of a matchup that was for MU...
So, bottom line is we can call this the MU rule change!! Ha
FROM THE ARTICLE -
"During the call, NCAA spokesman David Worlock noted that in recent years, two teams were dropped two lines -- Marquette in 2007 and Brigham Young in 2012. "

Jerel's arm was going to be in a sling regardless of seed.

The difference between playing a 9 seed and an 11 seed is large. Of course Jerel's injury wasn't going away, but we could have gotten out of the first round against an 11 seed - or at least scored 20 points in the first half.
Ugh, can we not talk about that game? The only time I was ever happy CBS cut away.

Why in the hell would they try to squeeze it all in Jan-April? I'd assume they'd make it at least Jan-May/June or late Dec.
I think it'd be great for college basketball to start later. It pretty much forgotten about until college football finishes and really never gets full attention until after the Super Bowl.

We got screwed in 2008. Blasted ND at home, lost to them by 3 in South Bend, beat them in the BET and somehow got seeded below them. We got to play Stanford in the 2nd round, ND got to play Washington State. ND had a way easier conference schedule, giving them 3rd place in the Big East. We also beat the Big Ten Champs at their place in the non-conference season.
