Title: How does the New Big East stack up all time?
Post by: Galway Eagle on July 25, 2013, 02:47:58 PM
For those interested I compiled a spreadsheet showing the tournament success of every "power conference" (including MWC, A10, AAC and BE) I found a lot of things interesting such as how close our combined bids are to the best conferences like the B1G

Also eventually going to break it down by decade currently working on the since 2000 comparison.

Nice bit of research. Of course the future will determine more than the past, but it's a strong résumé and it's definitely an upgrade over any conference we were in prior to the Big East.

Ya just wanted to see if our numbers matched those of the traditional major conferences or if we were more like the boarder major conferences like the A10 AAC and MWC.

When the AAC loses Louisville to the ACC, there will be some serious re-balancing with the AAC sinking and the ACC moving even further up.

Yikes. SJU, Providence, Creighton, and DePaul would be worthless if you did it from 2000-present. Georgetown would fall like a rock.

Butler would be a big addition, obviously.

The thing about looking at re-alignment like this is that a lot of moves sent teams from one major conference to another. The BE has always had to poach lesser conferences to back-fill lost teams (including us). With that said, its tough to say that X, Creighton, and Butler would have contributed the same (or more) if they were in the BE instead of their respective conferences over the last 10 years. None of them would have won an auto-bid. Its all speculative, though.

That's the beauty of the tourny it doesn't matter if you're in a mid major conference you got to the sweet16 the same as everybody else which is why I didn't do records or anything else

Yes, once a team is in the tournament, anything can happen. But some of the teams that made the tourney might not have even had the opportunity to play in it if they were in a more competitive conference....

Going forward the BigEast as 10 team conference  3- 5 bids,
The Big 10 6-8
The ACC  6-9
Every year the gap is going to get larger.

Why will the gap get larger?

A big issue i could see developing over the years is great head coaches jumping to the better conferences even if the money is only marginally better. The BE used to be a conference coaxhes wanted to be a part of. Im not sure thats necessarily the case anymore.

So you are predicting Northwestern, Iowa, Nebraska, and Penn State are on the upswing. C'mon.

For the crap of it, I weighted performances 1 pt for 1st round, 2 pts for 2nd, 4 pts for 3rd, etc. and summed the conferences.

ACC - 2091 pts.
Big10 - 1639
Pac12 - 1578
SEC - 1425
Big12 - 1323
AAC - 1183
Big East  - 970
A10  - 386
MWC - 289

Round of 64   Sweet 16   Elite 8   Final 4   Runner Up   Champions   Weighted Pts.
Big East
Geogetown   29   22   36   40   48   32   207
Villanova   33   32   48   32   0   32   177
Marquette   31   32   28   24   16   32   163
Saint Johns   28   18   24   16   16   0   102
Butler   12   10   8   16   32   0   78
Depaul   22   20   12   16   0   0   70
Providence   15   10   16   16   0   0   57
Seton Hall   9   8   8   8   16   0   49
Xavier   23   12   8   0   0   0   43
Creighton   18   6   0   0   0   0   24
BE Total                     970
Started making it purty.
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B6mDNKbsLFiqWEpQSGN1NzJubHM/edit?usp=sharing

(updated purtier - with AAC, Louisville brings 319 points to their total, which goes to the ACC).

For the crap of it I figured out the average worth of each time in each conference. (T-Bone's formula/number of teams in conference)

ACC 139.40
Big 10 136.58
Big 12 132.3
PAC 12 131.5
AAC 118.3
SEC 101.79
BEast 97
A10 29.69
MWC 26.27

SEC isn't as good as it appears and the Big 12 and AAC both move up.

It's those final four and championship numbers that drag us down. We have a lot of tournament darlings but not teams that consistently make it to the final weekend. Hopefully we can remedy that this year.

You're right so why don't you just focus on wins in the tournament then rather than bids

The AAC is including Louisville though so once you remove them they should drop substantially. There is no doubt the ACC is the best basketball conference in the country.

It is hard to tell looking at all of those stats... are you also averaging by number of teams?  The new Big East has only 10 teams while soon the ACC and Big Ten will have quite a bit more.  I think averaging scores by number of teams seems to be fair way of  determining conference strength.

I looked at the average # of bids per team and the new big east looks even better

ACC          22.3 bids per team
Big East    22
Big 12       21.9
Big 10ish   19.8
AAC          19.5
Pac 12       18.8
SEC           18.1
MWC          10.1
A10            9.3
