"Chris Otule (@Tule42) officially granted sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA for 2013-14 campaign."
The key word??? "officially"
I didn't think he'd be denied, but now that it's official I'm very happy about it. As should all MU fans.
When is the last time we've been able to say "Marquette might have the best-manned center position in the nation"?
Before the Otule-Gardner combo, I had been waxing poetic about Marquardt-Nyenhuis!
Come tourney time we might see a line-up of:
24 Year old Chris Otule
23 Year old Todd Mayo
23 Year old Jamil Wilson
22 Year old Davante Gardner
22 Year old Derrick Wilson
That's older than some NBA teams.

And the young 22 year old Jake Thomas off the bench.

Hope we don't have any threads about 'Past their prime'. ::)
Chris Otule (greater than) Hibbert.

Five Year Rule waiver requests are made after exhaustion of the five years. Otule's circumstances made for a fairly vanilla waiver request and there was little chance it would not be granted. However, the formal process couldn't begin until this spring.

Thereby supporting Jay Wright's " Marquette stays old" comment.

Marquette stays experienced is more like it. Jay will learn.
How can we possibly say we will have the best manned center position in the country? Otule has no hands and trips over his own feet. He is average at best. He is a body. We probably aren't even the best manned center position in the conference.

Otule is equal to/better than Hibbert.

You're ignoring BEast 6th man of the year Davante Gardner. With the way Buzz subs those two in and out you practically get Otule's defense and Davante's offense without their somewhat lacking opposite half of the court play.

Posts like this are why many long-time Scoopers put little stock in the posts of new members. If you don't realize the value of Otule you have a very limited understanding of the game of basketball.

+1, Otule is one of the most impactful defensive centers in the country.

I agree wholeheartedly that Otule is a defensive game changer, wait 2 years when he is gone and you will see the difference totally. Gardner almost is clueless on the D end, Gardner
should go back and watch Wes Unseld use his body on the D end to learn how to block out with that ass, to many times players goy the inside spot on him. How many times could you
see Devante being upset with himself for not doing his job correct. Otule really improved last year, it was to bad the guards did not know how to throw the ball into him when he had
inside posiition. Sure there were times when he made some mistakes, but with only one eye, he is a tremendous player considering his handicap.
