Title: Announcement from the Dean of the Law School
Post by: Sir Lawrence on May 09, 2013, 09:26:41 AM
From Dean Kearney this morning:

"Charles Franklin, who directed the Marquette Law School Poll during 2012, is leaving the University of Wisconsin, where he is a tenured professor of political science, and joining us on a full-time basis as director of the Marquette Law School Poll and professor of law and public policy.  This is a big deal—even apart from the fact that the central administration of the University will pay most of the costs of this project (and no law tuition dollars are involved).

I shall elaborate only briefly.  With the exception of the basketball team, during my time at the school Marquette University has not seen anything like the Marquette Law School Poll in terms of bringing media attention to the University.  Since January 2012, Charles's work, together with Mike Gousha and others, has established Marquette as the go-to source for public opinion in Wisconsin, bringing a broadcast media value in Wisconsin alone of more than $2.76 million and occasioning some 10,700 media stories in the print media across all fifty states and beyond.  And Charles delivered substantively as well: the poll accurately captured voter attitudes before each of five major Wisconsin elections in 2012, involving the gubernatorial recall, U.S. Senate, and presidential races.  Yet it is the possibilities for the future that are most exciting: in particular, while Charles will be based in the Law School, he will be a valuable resource for faculty across many disciplines, as they seek to integrate their research into initiatives that more directly affect the larger society, particularly that in the region that we call home."

Dean Kearney is hustling hard to establish Marquette as the preeminent law and policy school not just in Wisconsin but around the US.  The poll got tons of recognition in this years election because of Wisconsin's swing-state status.  He really talked up the program at this years Chicago attorney get together.  He's a great dean and the best guy to lead that law school at this point.  Great to see moves like this.

UW schools are losing a lot of quality people due to the increased retirement and health contributions from a couple years ago.

A nice pick up for MU. Can only help their academic ranking.

Idk, it gets Marquette's names on Wisconsin news broadcasts and occasionally media outlets outside of the state which is great and all, but political polling doesn't really strike me as incredibly rigorous academic work that will bring great prestige to the school.

This must be part of the plan to raise MU's profile.

I can't speak for how rigorous or prestigous polling is when it comes to academic work, but after the last election cycle, when there were so many hacks offering faulty polling analysis and seemingly making stuff up, I can speak to this guy's accuracy and competence.  He was a must read for me ever since the recall election for Wisconsin gov, and I'm not from Wisconsin.  I have friends on the east and west coast with no connection to Marquette who simply take an interest in politics that followed him closely based off of the record of his work and accuracy.

Look how much attention Nate Silver's gotten the last decade, whether it be from sports related data-analysis or electoral polling, especially after he gets it right.  I'm assuming next time around polling and data-analysis is only going to become more of a focus, and with Wisconsin's position as a swing state and this guy developing a national reputation, I don't see how it can bring anything but positive attention to Marquette.

So I'm not arguing your point, simply noting this guy is legit and strikes me as a rising star.   After his work in the recall election, I confidently took his polling picks to the window and bet that Obama would win Wisconsin along with the Tammy Baldwin money-line, and with the help of the Oregon Ducks, paid my student loans and rent for December of last year.  I will continue to invest in him if lines are offered on future Wisconsin elections.

Ya I know nothing about this guy; I'm sure he's great. I was just pointing out that those thinking that this somehow will make MU the "preeminent law and policy school in the country" or seriously affect our rankings are making way too much of it.

The talent drain started way before Act 10.  Too bad the system didn't tap into the slush fund to help retain some top professors.

Tranny. That way there's no gender bias.
