Title: Arizona Transfer-Angelo Chol
Post by: netty24 on May 02, 2013, 03:00:43 AM
Announced he was transferring earlier tonight from the University of Arizona. Sounds like he was stuck behind a talented frontcourt and would continue to see limited minutes due to the arrival of some excellent recruits. Would he be worth a look as a 5 to possibly bridge the gap from Oxtule to (fingers crossed) Stone or Ellenson? I think buzz should at least make an inquiry to see if he would be interested. Seems like a Jameel-type player, a high energy shot-blocker and rebouder. Only averaged 2 pts & 2 rebs per game in 8 minutes, but the talent seems to be there, as he was rated in the 60-80 range nationally in high school.

6'9" 225lbs

Overkill....

Thanks.

But no thanks. We have him covered in Steve Taylor and Jameel McKay... no need for duplicate talents.

Really? McKay hasn't even stepped on the floor and is built like Lawrence Blackledge.

You know we only have 2 players above 6'8 after next season right? With Otule and Gardner gone, we will need size like this.

Haha, spot on!  Trend is still a scrawny dude.

Chol is described as a long athletic player with the ability to control the paint at BOTH ENDS. Exceptional athlete and a stellar shot blocker.
UNBELIEVEABLE WORK ETHIC. Continues to show GREAT PROGRESS. 6-9, 230 LBS. Wouldn't hurt to inquire about him. We need players
who mix it up. We do have Taylor and McKay, Could use some BIG BUTT after Ox leaves.

11 months from now MU's frontcourt will consist of Taylor and McKay as we lose Wilson/Otule/Gardner on top of Anderson and Lockett (he really is a forward) this year.  A "big" transfer would be a good situation for 2014-15.  PS, Burton will contribute some in the frontcourt, but he is seriously undersized for interior play.

I don't like it.  Lets put aside the fact that Chol is transferring because he isn't part of the Arizona rotation.  Two years out of HS, and he isn't averaging one bucket a game.  Taking a castoff from Arizona isn't a path to becomming better than Arizona.

This year would be the ideal situation to recruit a top HS senior like Goodluck Okonoboh.  He doesn't have to contribute right away, there are reserve minutes available so he can develop, and there would be a starting spot avaialble one year away.

If we take Chol, we have a hard time with recruits in 2014 because they know Chol becomes eligible at the same time. Any incoming frosh would look at the depth chart and conclude that they are the 4th frontcourt player (behind McKay as a senior, and both Taylor and Chol as juniors).  The year after that, no starting spots open, so you may be sitting behind Taylor and Chol as seniors in your sophomore year.

I would think Buzz would have a good idea on the chances of recruiting a player with better potential than a transfer and that would weigh into any decision he would make. McGuire liked transfers, because they would be hard pressed to transfer again after sitting out.

Chol played well the 2nd half of his freshman year, enough so that I thought he'd be a much bigger factor this past year at UA. But the additions of Tarczewski, Jerrett (not sure why went pro, much more puzzling than Blue) and Ashley limited his PT last year. Adding Gordon (along with Jefferson at SF) this year means PT probably wasn't going to go up markedly. He's more of a 4 than a 5. Worth a look, but I'd guess there'd be better options available.
