Title: Garrett Swanson
Post by: BCHoopster on April 18, 2013, 04:52:07 PM
I was thinking that they are going to give him one of the two, does he have any talent to play at MU?  Looks like he can shot the three.  Has anybody seen him play in open gym?

I don't know about him being able to shoot the three ball....3-21 in his one year at Idaho State for a whopping 14%.  Small sample size, but he doesn't appear to be a 3-pt shooter to me.

Saw him with Homer, looked like he had a nice shot, sample size is to small, looks like clean-up work and end of games.

Just based on watching him in pro am, Jake Thomas is better.

Ya 21 shots is way to low to get a good percentage from. He shot 45% in his high school career which is pretty darn good for being 6'7 and shot a total of 45% at idaho state. Heck thats better then anyone on our team last year.  I dont see Jake Thomas playing a lot on any d1 team as a freshman. My opinion is Swanson down the line will be a bigger contributor then Jake. Although this is Gardner, Jamil, and Jujuan's team next year!

Swanson will barely see the floor.

Yep, he is your typical walk on, just a little taller.  As far as giving him a scholie, that's highly doubtful as Buzz will want to keepp it free.  Even if not used this spring, there is always the possibility of a mid-season transfer.

Was he even on the bench? I know he is in the into video and on a team poster but I never saw him on the bench (I do live in ohio now for school and only went to like 12 games this year) but I know the one walk on from benet high school in Chicago is named Dylan flood so I'm just curious where Swanson was

You don't travel with the team if you arent eligible to play.

Mid-season transfers...YUCK.  Why?  Because you already know that they are impulsive and are almost certainly making a bad decision to leave before yearend.  (Unless of course, they were pushed.)

I've would think that almost always being the biggest player on the floor should lead to a higher shooting % than 45%.

Well, you see wrong.  Jake Thomas averaged 13.3 points, 4 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 1 steal as a freshman on a D1 team.

Compare that to Swanson's 3.6 points, 1.9 rebounds, 0.1 assist, and 0.4 steal per game.

Not much of a comparison.

Buzz told him, just like he did Jake, that he would get one if it was available. However, you have got to wonder if the criticism Buzz received for taking away Jake's scholarship will make him not want to give a one year scholarship to a walk on, if the scholarship was not going to be used.

I think Buzz will do what's best for his kids regardless. I don't think criticism from Buckyville or even JSOnline will impact his decisions at all. That said, I also don't expect us to have any open scholarships next year.

Anyone know the background on his "departure"?

It's a curious case as he was on campus for a year and then off soon after.

Fairly certain he was abducted by aliens shortly after he was spotted wearing IU shorts.

Not the first to do that, remember David Singleton?  Transferred here to red shirt a year as a walk on hoping to get a scholarship and then disappeared.  If you ask me it's a wise tactic for Mid major level players to up their game under better coaches and playing with better players, before heading back to the mid major levels.

I believe Singleton's departure was a different story.

Nah.  Hear he just had his own self-made issues.  In any event, no big loss as you say.

Not to hijack, but Singleton wound up at Albright College and graduated recently.

Had 15.9/game, 9.8 reb(!!!).
I am not comparing D-III stats here, just noting what he did.

And hanging with Jae.
