Read that he tore his Achilles.  If that's true, doubt he comes back from it at his age.

He'll come back, he's a driven person.

I see it like Rivera. There's no way he goes out like that. He'll be back for at least 1 season and I think more. He has plenty in the tank.

Why not?

Let's just say ESPN and I don't have the same opinion of Kobe's status, more off the court than on.

Off the court stuff is off the court.  Kobe is the best 2-guard to play the game...only behind Jordan.  Players like that should be treasured not rushed off to retirement.

You can't ignore the off the court stuff.  He should be in jail not treasured on the court.  Of course this is my personal opinion, but when the guy says in a press conference:

"I understand how she could have thought it was rape," they are guilty.

I can ignore whatever I want to ignore - since she refused to testify I really can't claim that he was guilty of rape.

I can't stand him and I have to live in Lakerville.  Most people would be in prison for what he did.  Having said all that, he's a warrior, one of the greatest ever and a strong will to win, which I respect.  I don't like seeing great players go out not on their terms, so the injury from that standpoint is troubling.  I hope he comes back for that reason alone, though I won't be watching because I hate the Flakers and the NBA in general (though I admit it is actually semi-watchable the last two years).

I'm not trying to lessen what Kobe (alledgedly) did, but there are so many athletes out there who benefited from their wealth and fame; Ray Ray, Stallworth, Harrison, etc. It's kind of sickening.

Chico is correct. If Kobe had neither fame nor wealth he would be in prison for rape. I was in Iraq in 07 when an Army guy was hiding in the women's latrines in the middle of the night, waiting for the random female soldier to wander in. He raped four soldiers in the span of a couple weeks. A group of Rangers set him up, caught him and the man ceased to exist. Rape is a hideous sin. Men of Honor will never accept it. Under any circumstance.

Wait a minute, do I read this anecdote correctly?  Vigilante justice = Men of Honor?  Situational Ethics vs. System of Military Justice?  A whole bunch of criminals in this scenario.  Take your pick.

It was not vigilante justice. The rapist drew a weapon and fired first. The Rangers defended themselves. Had the perp not opened fire they would have taken him into custody. There was just one criminal.
