Just checked an online gambling website and 4-seed Syracuse is favored by 4 points on Saturday over 3-seed Marquette, despite us beating them earlier this year, finishing ahead of them in the same league, and beating Syracuse three of the last four times we played.
I expected as much, and expect all the national media to pick 'Cuse for the Final Four. Bring on te disrespect, we thrive on it!
Perfect.
Works for me.
As Buzz said yesterday "If they reseeded us tomorrow, I'm sure we would be 8th out of 8."
That's perfect.
I like MU with the points, I think that's a value pick.

Put it in perspective. Cuse lost to Marquette on the road, during their worst slump of the year, with Gardner scoring a career high in points, and Cuse only lost by 3. Not to mention they were up by 11 at one point.
Now facing a Cuse team who is the hottest team in the nation. Who has beaten 3 ranked teams in the past few weeks. 2 of them being top 10. One of them being the #1 team in the nation for 10 weeks this year. Actually they made that #1 team look silly. Their zone looks better than it ever has. Boeheim said none of his previous teams could compete with the way this group is playing defense right now.
So yeah, not the same team the boys faced a month or so ago. Not even close. This Cuse team is red hot. I would not be surprised if they win by 20+.

Are you Doug Gottlieb's brother? "I expect Miami to win by a sizable margin"
Theyre playing well to be sure, but Hottest team in the nation? Hardly.
Louisville (dismantled Syracuse less that 2 weeks ago), Ohio State, Kansas just to name a few. The problem for them is that they have been wildly inconsistent all year long. Which team will show up Saturday? We'll find out. I would not be at all surprised to see them wilt the way Miami did against the relentless pressure MU applies on both ends. Likewise, I wouldn't be surprised to see that zone cause MU serious issues, while Southerland rains threes on them.
If MU plays like MU, I think it is highly likely Syrancyse will not respond well.

No you weren't rude. Some people around here are just sensitive.
I thought it was a solid post from the 'Cuse point of view.
'Cuse beat Cal by 6 and Indiana by 10. They're both okay wins, but against teams with little experience against Syracuse's zone. I think our game will be more of a fist-fight than Syracuse's past couple games, and I think that Boeheim is expecting the same thing.
We're gonna be the underdog all the way through Championship Monday.

Who is hotter in the last 2 weeks? I'm not talking all year. I'm talking last 2 weeks. What other team has beaten 3 ranked teams in the last 2 weeks?
Louisville dismantled Cuse? Did you watch the game or just see the box score? Cuse was up by almost 20.

Syracuse may very well win, but it won't be by 20.
The games where MU has lost their heads have been where the pace has been too fast. (Louisville, Florida) Neither team is going to push the pace.

Cuse's zone is familiar to this team and that alone is a major factor teams like Indiana didnt have. They are playing well and I expect a great Big East battle.
Good

I think there is a lot of truth to that. BUT remember that the zone you saw two months ago is not the same you will see on Saturday.
Mu has a some things that most teams dont when facing the zone:
1)A couple of solid post up players that can pull off a very formiddable High low tandem.
2)Tall enough players that can hit that 15-16 foot shot on a consistent basis in the middle of that zone.
3)A very good passing post player
#2 makes #1 very difficult on the zone. Most teams are not really thinking about taking that 15 footer. Then on top of that they arent posting on the low blocks at the same time.

Yes, and then they crumbled in unbelievable fashion. They were completely dismantled in that second half.
They beat three ranked teams in the last two weeks. Great. They also had their asses handed to them in the last two weeks. They've won exactly three games on a row. Good for them.
I really don't care who's been hotter. If they plan to hang their hat on that in Saturday, then I may as well make my travel plans for Atlanta right now.
Both teams have changed since Feb. I agree 'cuse is playing the best it has all year, but so is Marquette. A 20 point margin over a team that knows yours well in what will likely be a controlled possession game does hurt your credibility.
I happen to agree with Buffaloboy. This is a very tall order for us.

Why? MU has not only seen Syracuse's zone two months ago...they saw it last year...and the year before.
Boeheim said it himself this morning - he would rather play a team that hasn't seen it. There is no doubt that MU has the advantage of playing against it. Now that doesn't mean that MU will win.

A 10 point game can turn to a 20 point just in the last 2 minutes because of fouls and free throw shots. Happens all the time.

If you thought I meant the way we move or line up is different, that's not what I'm saying. I meant the players are moving better and faster. They're anticipating passes, and pushing the perimeter.
When Marquette last played Cuse, the Orange were in their worst slump in a couple of years. That gets to players. Obviously.

Which is why that game they played, the one where Cuse was pretty hot shooting 48% last month, is the best precursor both teams have for tomorrow.

Buffaloboy, welcome. If Syracuse plays its best, they probably win. As always, Boeheim's system is to destroy with the zone that looks so easy to beat and yet generates the turnovers that leads to transition hoops. Average in the half court. Buzz has a better chance of getting MU to beat Syracuse than Crean would, that is for sure.
Anybody who watched our game against Syracuse could tell you we were very fortunate to win. On the Postgame show, Buzz Williams himself talked about the vast difference in talent, going so far as to say the Orange have NBA players coming off the bench. We are going to need an extraordinary game to win...better than last night. Syracuse is MUCH tougher than Miami and twice as talented as Marquette. Can we win? Of course. But on a list of bad match ups for Marquette, the only two teams left in the draw I'd list are Louisville and Syracuse. They are far and away the two most athletic teams still standing. It's why I wanted Indiana. They had talent, but weren't going to out athletic us and we are tougher than them.

What went right over his head is that there's a difference between someone who has been posting around here for a long time and who is an MU fan and some dork who signs up for an account on an opposing teams messageboard this morning and starts posting about how his team is going to win an upcoming game by 20+ points.

This seems to be your response when, you know, you have no response.
Cuse has had 33 steals over the course of the tournament so I would say their zone is playying quicker and more aggressive than it has earlier this year. However, none of these teams are used to a zone which comes into play. Cuse is also TO prone themselves, commiting 37 in the same 3 game stretch. What also intrigues me is their balanced scoring production the last few games. They have many capable guys as do we.

I wish we would win three in a row.
Actually, Buffalo and PRN have expressed some of what I have been thinking, I don't think it's a surprise that Syracuse is favored - they have been playing well. If they have a good night and we are flat - it's over. But if we play well we certainly have a reasonable chance to come out ahead. As Tower noted, these two teams know each other pretty well. Of course, even if we win, we'll be reseeded fourth,no matter who else winds up going to Atlanta.

Nope. It's because "Wise men never argue with fools, because people from a distance can't tell who is who"?
We seem to go through this every time a line comes out. Bottom line, people are going to favor Cuse because of their name, coach, and history. Vegas must take that into account when setting lines. If MU was favored, the betting on Cuse would be huge.

Starting off like a fan boy and saying Syracuse is the hottest team in the nation is not the way to have a conversation.
If everyone nationally wants to devalue our wins, let us do it for Syracuse.
Montana: May have been the worst team in the tournament.
Cal: 12 seed in the round of 32, #53 RPI (Davidson was #63 even with their schedule), pretty underwhelming team
Indiana: Crean vs. a zone - game over before it began.
I believe that we will win.

Just a piece of advice you may or may not choose to take:
If/when you're ready to taken seriously, stop saying you "wouldn't be surprised" to see Syracuse beat a higher seeded team to whom they've already lost this season by 20+ points.
It makes you come across as either a liar or an idiot.

If you thought I meant the way we move or line up is different, that's not what I'm saying. I meant the players are moving better and faster. They're anticipating passes, and pushing the perimeter.
When Marquette last played Cuse, the Orange were in their worst slump in a couple of years. That gets to players. Obviously.
If I'm wrong, ill be back and take my beating like a man.
Worst slump in a couple years? It was a 3 game losing streak. There were wins and other loses around it, but that was just their season. Hey, maybe you were just outplayed. Syracuse played well against Marquette. They just got beat. Marquette played better.
The fact that MU has won in the past is at least a bit relevant. A lot of MU players from those teams are still on this team. One of the biggest advantages Syracuse has is befuddling teams with its zone. That shouldn't happen with MU. The players are familiar with the scheme and the type of players executing it.
That said, Cuse is playing really well right now. So is MU. Should be a great game. Personally, I really hope MU punts you right to the ACC. It will probably be a close game and a grinder though.

Not sure what stretch you are talking about. From Feb 13- Mar 6 (7 games) Syracuse was 3-4. From Feb 23-Mar 14 (7 Games) they were 3-4. Basically there was no 7 game stretch of Syracuse's season in which they went 2-5. When Syracuse lost 3 in a row, they lost those games to teams that finished higher in the standings. Why isn't it possible that they were better teams? The course of the season seemed to show they were.

Oh am I wrong? I'm doing this by memory while driving. Although I suppose 3-4 isn't a whole lot better than 2-5.

Marquette - no (even your own fans in this thread said you were lucky to win)
Louisville - we beat Louisville already before that.

Yeah Cuse was up seven. That is great and all but in 13 minutes you got outscored by 23. In 13 minutes. Sorry but those last 13 minutes still count. It is hard to make a credible point saying Syracuse is better because they were up 7 with 13 minutes left, and ignore those 13 minutes where they were outscored 39-16.

OK if it isn't getting their brain bashed in, what exactly is a 17 point loss?
They still beat you 2/3 times. They had a better conference record. They had a better overall record. They had a better RPI. There is no empirical way to say that Syracuse is better. Clearly, Louisville is a better team. The only way you can say Syracuse is better, is that you are a silly blind homer.

Just because Louisville is a better team doesn't mean they are incapable of losing. Syracuse is obviously a very strong team who can beat anyone on a given night. Just because Georgetown lost to USF, that doesn't mean USF is better. Teams play better on some nights and worse on others. But over the long haul, the course of the entire season, Louisville proved themselves to be better than Syracuse. There is no way around it. It doesn't matter that you were winning at halftime.
