Does anyone know why Mayo didn't play? Did I miss something. I can assume it might have been he struggles on defense.
Coach tightened up the rotation.
Yea lot less subs and he did yerrible on D last two games. Buzz really played eight deep today.
No need for him tonight and he just hasn't been very good this year. I'm surprised some people on this board consider him to be an "elite" defender. Just talking in general when I make that comment. He's a slightly above average defender up to this point.
Vander played all 40 tonite!
Yep. Not complicated. We were beating at team like a drum, and coach kept it that way. No reason to substitute.
Jamal Ferguson took his minutes!
Todd Mayo is just not a good player right now. Why should he play. If Buzz put him in over Vander, everyone would be calling for Buzz's head.
I thought he would be key to our defensive effort. I was dead wrong. Our defense was outstanding.

DW is getting his minutes. Would not be suprised if TM is not back.
Maybe it's just me but watching Mayo play D in this tourney has been brutal.... he really hasn't been good at all
He'll probably be back if (when?) we play Cuse because of his 3ball. His legs will be 100% fresh coming to to Saturday's game and hopefully he's hungry.

As much as it pains me to say so, I have to agree. It doesn't seem like his head has been in the game all season. Between the off the court non-sense that seems to never end, and poor play, not mention Buzz doesn't trust him. Very well could be he didn't play because of poor decision making in the Butler game, I'm referring to his shining moment trying to draw a foul on a forced three...

I might be over analyzing things, but I think Buzz sent a message to Jamal tonight.

Todd may very well play significant minutes against Syracuse's zone. Or he may play one minute, turn the ball over, lose his man on D and spend the rest of the day glued to the end of the bench. I would be shocked if he looks at the incoming talent next year and thinks he's going to get minutes,

DW's not getting his minutes. Having Vander play 40 and Trent playing 38 is what is preventing Mayo from getting on the floor.

My guess is that Jamal has been practicing very well so Buzz rewarded him by getting him in the box score. It wasn't much but it's a gesture. Either that or he just wanted to get someone a nice applause from the MU faithful and Jamal was the closest one to him so he sent him in. Did he come in for Lockett?

True. But if Buzz trusted Mayo, Blue and Lockett probably would have gotten a quick breather at some point.
Mayo and Thomas not playing tonight while Ferguson got garbage minutes means that (1) Lockett and Blue were playing really well (2) Buzz wasn't comfortable with how they are playing defense lately (3) they did not have a good week of practice.

You completely forgot about the 25 foot three with 28 seconds left on the shot clock

My guess was that Buzz was rewarding him--he's had to sit at the end of a very long bench throughout this season, and I would guess at not much fault of his own--there just aren't (m)any minutes available at his position this year (as opposed to Steve, who had more available to him because of his size). Hopefully this was a way for Buzz to get him in, feel like he's at least playing in one of the tourney games, and give him a taste to hopefully keep him around for future years.
As for Mayo--Buzz may have just disliked the matchups in this game. Given the way the rest of his rotations have gone all year, I wouldn't be surprised if it is part of some master plan, and could see Mayo getting more minutes against 'Cuse. Or, maybe he's back in the doghouse. In Buzz we trust.
Miami played man to man, Cuse plays zone. Mayo should see some time against the Cuse. Just like last meeting.
What about Jamal being from Norfolk? It's possible Buzz did that for family reasons? He knows he has Jake on the hook - he's sticking around. But making sure that Jamal sticks?
Who knows...
