Good luck to him, I feel that's one of the toughest "high major" jobs in college hoops. It's been a dead-end job for the last several decades.
Wonder if his dad will hang it up in the NBA and join him on NU's bench. He'd be a big help to a young and inexperienced coach.

Hanging it up might not be a matter of choice for his dad after this disastrous season in Philly.
That said, I'm not sure I'd want my dad looking over my shoulder like that. Sure didn't work out for Lane Kiffin at USC.
There's an interesting sub-plot going on here. You see it with this move and Bobby Hurley taking the Buffalo job yesterday. Former Duke players putting themselves in better positions in the hope of obtaining the Duke job once Coach K retires.
Since Coach K's coaching tree stinks, this will be a wide-open process. And, I think Duke wants the position to stay in the family, similar to North Carolina. Currently, the best coach from the Coach K tree is Mike Brey, but he's 54 years old. The other big name is Tommy Amaker, but his flame out at Michigan might cause some to pause.
If Collins can get NU in the tournament, he will put himself in a very strong position to be consider the successor to Coach K.

I think Collins will have to do a little bit more than get NW into the tournament. Duke will have some great "external" candidates interested in that job.
A lot of people here said this wouldn't happen. A bit surprised myself, especially with Minnesota job opening up. Best of luck to him.

Certainly, there will be some extremely high-profile coaches outside the Duke family that would be very interested in the position. But, I'm not sure they go down that road. Similar to North Carolina and Dean Smith, I believe Duke values hiring somebody with ties to the culture that Coach K built. In addition, I'm assuming that Coach K himself will have a great deal of input on who succeeds him.
Also, NU is a very bad job. Making the tourney would be a big deal. Respected coaches like KO and Carmody couldn't do it. It would be a great accomplishment.
NU is putting some money into athletics finally, will make the job better than it has been in the past. The beauty of basketball is you only need 2 or 3 really good players to make a run at it. If they can do as well as they have in football, you would have to think at some point they are able to get it done in basketball.
I wonder if he's enough of a salesman.

Yeah Coach K will definitely have a lot to say about hire, probably about as much as the AD there. Regardless, should be interesting when it does happen as I'd imagine there will be a division amongst the fan base.
It will stay in the family because it's the easiest decision that the AD can make. You make an "internal hire," and if it works...great! If not you deflect the blame, Coach K gets marginalized, and hire the guy you really want. If you make the "external hire" right away, you put the candidate through what Larry Brown went through at UCLA.
But people are right that the Coach K coaching tree really stinks. (And I don't think Brey is really in the family...he spent one year on the bench.) I'm not sure who I would even consider from that group - arguably the most successful was Jeff Capel. But Dawkins isn't working at Stanford...Amacher flamed out at Michigan...Snyder screwed up Missouri...Collins and Hurley are unknowns...

Brey was an assistant at Duke from 1987-1995. Your right though, the Coach K tree is horrible. Amazing considering the success that the Duke and Coach K have had.
I'm just interested why Collins finally threw his hat in the ring and decided to leave Duke. NU is a bad job. He had been rumored the last few years to be in play for a number of positions that are much, much better (Dayton, Illinois, DePaul).
Thanks RJax...I mis-read the wiki page. I thought it was only one year.
Well then I think it's obvious that Brey is the best off that tree, but he hasn't been part of Duke basketball for a long time.

Illinois never seriously considered him.
Not sure about Dayton, but PTM assures me that is not a better job than Northwestern. Especially because it requires one to live near Dayton.

Bo Ryan to Duke. 2nd best F bomber in CBB after K.

Northwestern has been spending huge money on athletics for quite a while.., just not mensbball for some reason. They've a tremendous golf facility, great baseball, good football, decent rowing, sailing, soccer, swimming, etc. The new athletic facility on campus will give basketball a little shot in the arm.
They had 2 or 3 really good players in past few years, but for various reasons, it proved inadequate.

neither Dayton nor DePaul are better jobs than Northwestern. At least not now.
Augie, it's the NU culture that drove him there. I know you understand what I mean. Very similar atmosphere to Duke, plus greater potential to tap into Midwest recruits.
I just hope he doesn't bring another whiny dook b!tch like Greg Paulus...
I really like Northwestern basketball. And I think Collins is a good fit. But I hate dook and don't want it to become hate-able because of their presence.

very traditional fit.
