Davidson Scouting Report: All you need to know
Written by: Mark Strotman
As part of our week-long preview of Marquette in the NCAA Tournament, today we break down Davidson from a numbers standpoint. Later in the week we will look at the matchups that could decide Thursday's outcome. There were no surprises ... Strotty, if its giving away any trade secrets, How did you find out about Clinton Mann? The Davidson boards savaged a fan for just asking if anyone knew what his status was. Evidently, their board has a strict no discussion of injuries policy. Kinda cute, if you ask me.
Mann's return would be big as he is the only player with height (6-7) and some heft (over 200 lbs) other than Brooks and Cohen.
BYW, I was able to find out on my own that he was out to to concussion symptoms.
I searched on Twitter to find out why he had missed the last 17 games and came across this, from March 15:
@jjones9
Davidson's 6th man F Clint Mann was back at practice yesterday. He'd be a huge help to the Cats frontcourt should he play in NCAAs
That's extremely goofy about their board and injuries.....
Listed here as probable. (http://www.donbest.com/ncaab/injuries/)
Sometimes a guy coming back after being out doesn't turn out all that great... as we know?

Is Lane Kiffin forum administrator?
Great report. I have seen their precision on offense referenced a couple of places now. What do they run? Princeton, swing, Bobby Knight motion, dribble drive, etc.?

Probably could have expanded on that in my report. From the few games I watched they're almost always looking to start a possession on the block with Cohen or Brooks. Cochran literally hung out at the 3-point line, rotating his angle waiting for a pass when it went down-low, and they do A LOT of cutting out of halfcourt sets, with Cohen (1.5 assists) a pretty solid passer on the block. Brooks is a much quicker big than Cohen, but Cohen uses his body really well...like a Davante.
Again, that's a very, very small sample size, but it was the conference championship game so I'm guessing they weren't trying to hide anything/go with something that hasn't worked for them this year.
Going to expand on it more in a matchups piece for Wednesday, but if you want some comparisons to Marquette:
Jumpers: Davidson - 50 percent of the time // MU 45%
Post-ups: Davidson - 17 percent // MU 11
Around the basket (layups, o-boards): Davidson - 28 percent // MU 38%
Runners: Davidson - 4 percent // MU 6%
I,m no basketball expert, but what kind of defense should we run against a team that likes to spread you out? Does anyone run the box and one anymore? Would that work?

I wouldn't run any zone stuff initially, at least not in the halfcourt. I think you play them in man, and f*ck with them as much as you can after a make. I'd throw some pressure at them and speed them up.
Have to watch out when MU doubles up at the post, then opponent kicks it out to the open man for a three.
No stupid fouls and run them, run them out of the arena.

This is also big. I think you have to be selective on when to double the post. Buzz likes to do that a lot, but it could hurt them with Davidson's shooters.

Agreed. It seems odd, but even so if they play this mistake free ball we are hearing about. Make them use up some of that clock. If you double down low you need to make it count and tie them up. Make sure they are taking contested shots.
Pressure the guards. Play 1 on 1 in the post. If you double the post make it from different spots so the offensive post player doesn't get comfortable. Can the Davidson guards beat MU off the dribble? If not, then don't help/stay with the shooters.
