Title: Mr. Basketball in the state of Wisconsin announced tonight
Post by: ChicosBailBonds on March 08, 2013, 11:36:09 PM
It was thought to be one of the toughest races in years.

Looks like Fischer got it over Koenig (UW), Wilson (MU), Thomas (ISU), Fuller (Nebraska)

It didn't say exactly where he will be going next year. The clues are "one of the best teams in the country" then "Indiana." he must be going to Butler.

Ah, another banner hangin' opportunity, for sure.

They should have just given Looney his award for next year while they were at it. Next year's vote will likely be the most lopsided vote in history.

I was surprised Koenig didn't get it for the very same reasons stated in the other thread...the provincialism of Wisconsin.  Fischer has played like a beast this year on the number 1 ranked team in Div I, but figured that didn't matter and they would give it to the UW-madison bound kid.

Fischer is only a 3 star recruit in some services, 4 in others.   http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/recruiting/player-Luke-Fischer-124096

Something tells me he'll end up doing much better than that 3 star rating.

But some folks are leery of Koenig because he is too flashy for Bo's system. Probably explains the disparity.

Part of it is probably that Koenig was suspended for part of the year.  And Fischer is the top player on one of the top teams in state history.

I have a feeling if Fischer was going to Marquette he doesn't win this award.  Over the years too many times the MU kid has gotten the shaft.  Now, I won't say that about Vander because he truly didn't live up to expectations his senior year, but in other cases I believe that to be the case.

I'll put my tin foil hat away now.   ;D

Eh, it's hard for me to see that.  MU have had a number of recruits win it, including ties (Christopherson and Nankivil) and close calls (Matthews over Landry).

Between this thread and the "Tired of our WI bretheran" thread, I see MU victimization is out in full force today.

I mean, it's not like we are playing for a championship or anything.

And magically if he commits to MU he will essentially forfeit his chances of getting the award even if he averaged 40 and 20 on an undefeated team.

No evidence that has happened in the past.  Name one time that a MU recruit should have gotten it, but didn't.

So you think they had some sort of Princeton bias?

TJ Bray had a very good year.  It was hardly controversial.  And this is one year after a MU recruit got the award.  (Maymon)

I can think of a few

Tony Smith in 1986
Steve Novak in 2002
Jerry Smith in 2006 (went to Louisville...Andy Polka won it)

2002...Greg Brown was a high D1 (ranked about 50 on Scout) prospect on the best team in the state (Vincent).  He had to go Juco due to eligibility and never made it to high level ball.

I have no idea about 1986 and Kirby Kulas, but according to this he averaged 23/12...not bad.

And 2006 doesn't really support your case at all cause Smith went to Louisville.

Just my opinions.  Tony Smith was hands down the best player that year and Kulas, who didn't even play DI ball, got the award.  Novak was ranked higher than Brown, though you know how I feel about these rankings, but if we're going to use them then we should point out Novak was 57th in the RSCI that year, Brown 80th.  https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?chrome=false&key=0Aixs-EnAQWbMdFM4WkxMM016dU5GekQ4bTF5VFB0SHc&output=html&pubredirect=true&widget=true

On Jerry Smith, using rankings again...45th best player.  Polka not even top 100.  Take the ratings for what they are worth, I don't particularly like them, but Jerry was a much better player than Polka in my opinion.

If he remained committed to UW it wouldn't even have been close.

Not true.  The tweet I got last night indicated the winner and I shared it.  Regardless of who won I would have posted it here.

Yeah, just like the other day when he said "I never said that" and I provided 5 or 6 illustrations where he had.  LOL.  He still hasn't responded to that one.

Believe what you want, I posted the tweet within a short time of receiving it.  I was genuinely surprised Koenig didn't get it.  Hate to see all this good Wisconsin talent leaving the state, but MU got their fair share which is nice.  Bucky got one...a good one...but they got stiffed mostly which is great.

Would love to talk further, but my son's game is about to start and proud papa has Canon in hand to shoot since proud mama is with daughter at her tennis gig.

Enjoy.  Go Warriors, bring home the championship!

College rankings have nothing to do with who had the better high school season.

Having watched four of these guys this year in person this year (all but Fischer and Fuller), here'd have been my vote ...

1. Thomas
2. Wilson
3. Fischer (no problem with any of the 1st three winning it)
4. Burton
5. Koenig
6. Fuller

BTW, Koenig was suspended for the first two games of the season.

Wilson went from two steps behind his defender to two steps ahead of his defender in about a 40-foot span on a fast break yesterday. Holy quickness.

Not sure if this is the exact perfect right spot for this, but wanted to share a brief story from yesterday to back Chico's provincialism idea ...

Kid I coached in basketball over 10 years ago when he was in 8th grade who's now a teacher and a decent-sized school in Western Wisconsin posts on Facebook that he thinks it's awful that Auburndale has to play Dominican in the D4 state title game; thinks it's too big an advantage when they're drawing from an area of 600 K and Auburndale is drawing from an area of about 600. Certainly a fair and arguable point. I respond that I think Auburndale also has a nice built-in advantage over a school like Dominican; they can put in their varsity system with their grade-school kids and work the same system with the same kids for nearly 10 years. He responds that that can't be the case because Auburndale shot 64 percent in the second half and still lost by double digits. I had the game on my second TV while I was watching MU yesterday and didn't think there was anyway they shot that in the second half. Looked at the box and they shot 33 percent in the 2nd half. At this point I'm going to let it go, but I can't. So I respond that the box on the WI2A site has them shooting 33 percent in the second half. He responds that they shot 64 percent until the midpoint of the 4th quarter before starting to chuck up a lot of bad shots. I do that math and it's possible, so I respond as such. I'm going to then suggest that they maybe need to play at a faster pace to get more shots if they're down 6 at the half, but at this point, I've been de-friended (oh well).

He's a kid who went to a D2 school and now teaches at a D2 school. IMHO this would be somewhere between worse and much worse at a smaller school (it definitely is now that I think about it, the former superintendent at the D4 school where I coach baseball is the one who spearheaded the move to 5 divisions).

Summary IMO - Has a built-in anti-private school bias at the HS and college level.

If Koenig doesn't go to Wisconsin-Madison, he's got no shot at the award this year. If Thomas goes to Wisconsin-Madison, he wins it. If Wilson goes to Wisconsin-Madison, he might be forgiven enough to win it. But being none of the top 3 is going to Wisconsin-Madison this year, the best player on the best team wins it.
