With all the talk of what is and isn't banner worthy, I was wondering what other people's ideal banner situation would be at Marquette.
Personally, I would have:
1977 Champion
1974 Final Four
2003 Final Four
1970 NIT Champion
1952 NCIT Champion
All NIT Postseasons
All NCAA Postseasons
2003 CUSA Champion
1997 CUSA Tourny Champion
1994 CUSA Champion
Hopefully 2013 Big East Champion
And the retired players/coaches as is it now.
Once we win conference a few more times they can all be thrown onto one banner like the postseasons.
Only real need for one IMO.

Exactly. The Great Alaskan Shootout (Beat Duke).
Every ranked opponent. All wins against others receiving votes on one banner.
If the greatest programs in basketball can do it, and we aspire to be one of the great programs.......

1994 was Great Midwest Conference. Other than that I'd like to have 1974 be national runner up rather than just final four. Defs don't want to sink to Depaul level where their sweet 16s are on a banner...
We should have one for every court rush, too.
I've always wondered why 1974 is just a Final Four banner, shouldn't it be national runner-up? Anyone have the explanation for this?
We should look to the school who knows how to do banners right.....

I have a degree from MU, I'm speaking.
I find it funny that we want to be like a blueblood program and there are examples of them putting banners up for every conference title, every jersey, every NCAA appearance....then moments later, we have fans here ripping some of these blue bloods for doing the same thing. It is classic, I'll give you that. Ok for Duke and UNC and KU to do it....not ok for IU to do it and God forbid if MU ever did it. LOL. What a school decides to do for their school is up to their school. There is no right or wrong answer, but sure enough depending on WHO the coach is at another school, that determines if it is right even if other, equally prestigious programs do it? Crazy
We should hang a banner made entirely of tinfoil in honor of our former coach.

Did you notice Indiana's freshman point guard wearing #11 this season? Has it been issued since Isiah? He must not be showing the proper respect.

I think it was more about IU, at this exact moment, deciding to break what appeared to be IU tradition.

Again, no. You're wrong about the argument people are making. People were pointing out how he abandoned tradition that IU had. I feel like if MU had put all accomplishments on 1 banner and Crean tried to hang an individual one there would be some people not happy about it.
Funny, I was going to start this thread. Great topic.
1) Lose the Catholic banner, that team was 9-14 during the regular season and it was consolation tourney
2) Figure out the conf banners. Either at least give 1994 their own or consolidate everything (I understand you can argue 97 was a fluke)
3) Put Warriors on the 1974 Banner, it's the truth, deal with it
4) Change 74 from Final Four to Runner Up
5) Figure out a color, we have royal blue for 1970 NIT, 1977 NCAA and the '90's Confs and then we go Navy Blue for 74 and 2003 and that ridiculous Catholic banner (serious Google it)
6) Consider a 1995 NIT Runner-Up Banner (NOT A PRIORITY but maybe in 2 years we bring Deane-o back, we pack Turners and we all live happily ever after for a day)
7) Fix the New post season banners. Too hard to read.
I would like to see them redo the banners at the BClike they have at the AL. They've already redone the postseason banner at the BC.
They aren't really uniform right now.

I know, and I think they've made it worse. IMO.
God do people need to grow up. Crean was here. He brought the program back to a level of prominence that hadn't been reached since Al. He was instrumental in getting MU better recognition, facilities and into a new conference. He left. He left in a bad manner. Quit acting like jilted brides and get over it. He moved on. MU has a great coach right now (that Crean hired, by the way). Why do we constantly feel the need to dwell on the past and bring up every little thing he did. Its like the guy you know that can't let go of his ex-girlfriend. It gets pathetic at a point, then it gets creepy and pathetic. It is 5 years later. For the love of God, let it go.

They will have to redo it again. They left no space for this season.
I think we need to have a banner listing all MU pre or post game bars that only exist in our memories now, and the year they closed. I'll volunteer to serve on the nominating committee.

This has nothing to do with Crean. This is MU randomly putting up mismatched banners for the past 25 years. Some of us are aesthetic nerds who want to see some uniformity.

I think the reason people are bringing up Crean within this thread completely has to do with putting up the banner for the Great Alaska Shootout, you know, that super prestigious tournament......
But then again, Crean bashing does seem to occur in almost any thread here on Scoop.

Who gets to set the tradition? The program. People are not up in arms about that, they are up in arms about the person that did it. If Brad Stevens was the coach and did it, no one would give two rips. Traditions are changed all the time and it is up to the school decide what they want to do. 20 years ago, people had a fit about Warriors changing. Now, it's about 50 50 split. In another 10 years, the Warrior backers (myself included) will be in a distinct minority. Things change.

Don't put any up.
Put them all at the Al.
Don't put any at the Al.
Draw them on the sidewalks on campus.
Put them on the outside of the BC
Let each team decide at the end of the year what they want.
Let Larry Williams be the "Banner Czar".
Let season ticket holders vote on facebook/twitter.
Honestly, I'm cool with any/all of it. Doesn't matter.
Let the students rush the court and cut down the nets every game. Put a banner up for every win. I think it's all fine.

I actually think this looks pretty cool, but we don't really play in a facility at which it would work well.
Chicos-you have to admit that the way things went down at Indiana the other night after the loss was a little awkward especially given the fact that the national media has picked up on it. I will grant you the fact that I don't think it would receive nearly the attention it has on this board had it been done by someone other than Crean, but then again, we don't have a lot of ex-coaches out there with his high profile to pick on.
EDIT: If you've already acknowledged that it was a bit strange, I am sorry. I know the acknowledgement won't get everyone off your case about the whole thing, but it would at least satisfy this poster that you're not wearing blinders related to Crean.

It's interesting to me that you (whom I read as a traditionalist of the first degree) think it's fair (maybe even praiseworthy) to rail against those who arbitrarily robbed Marquette of a wonderful tradition that set us apart - yet when Indiana does the same thing you're not offended in the least. The tradition of one banner is, to me, like the tradition of no names on the back of jerseys. If that sets IU apart it's in a good way. When did the Chicos who railed against deep sixing a tradition that made MU cool/unique morph into the guy who meekly accepts the edicts of the school and the program? Excusing IU by saying the other kids (UNC, Duke) do it is no better than excusing Marquette because Stanford and St Johns did likewise. Surprised you would take that path.

Lose the Catholic Champs banner. Not sure why that is up there. There must be a big donor that was on that team.
1977 NCAA Championship
1974 National Runner-up
2003 NCAA Final Four
1970 NIT Champion
A banner containing each of our NCAA tournament appearances
Banners with each of our retired, ring of honor players. Also, please add Jerome Whitehead to the ring of honor.
Finally, for our games, can our banners ring the scoreboard?

I think our 1974 Final Four Banner should also say "NCAA RUNNERS UP" to signify that we made it to the title game.
Sorry didn't notice that was already posted multiple times.
