Title: Notre Dame thoughts
Post by: tower912 on March 02, 2013, 03:16:59 PM
The offense was humming early.   Working that inside-out stuff works.    As good as CO and DG together are against the zone, the combo is not good against man.   Or against a team with hot 3 pt shooters.   DG simply can't close quickly enough.   Vander and Mayo were not good today.   Lockett wasn't either early, but picked it up late.  Free throw shooting, good or bad, is like a norovirus.   ND beats us in SB, and maybe on a neutral floor, with a healthy Cooley.       Great game by Otule and Wilson.   Most of the TO's came when the ball was not in Junior's hands.    I liked that Buzz called the TO with 2.3 seconds left to let Junior and Lockett get the ovation.

Minus the stupid turnovers, which I feel like Blue had a part in half, we looked good and probably should have beaten them by more.

Blue only had 3 of the 15.

What teams are doing are guarding him tight.  Making him put the ball on the floor, and he isn't making good decisions.  He needs to take the shot off the dribble and not get himself into trouble.

Mayo has these spots in games where he zones out mentally.

I guess from the celebration at the end, you can assume Otule is coming back next year.

Wilson scored 17 out of MU's 31 points in second half.  Ballgame.

MU was up by 16 at 11 minute mark, they were not good after that.  Vander, where are you?

Lockett made some clutch free throws at end, but had three turnovers in last 10 minutes, four total.

Otule had a career game, loss of Cooley helped some, but big basket after brutal Vander miss.  Chris missed free throw, but probably single play of the game.

No way on this planet that D. Wilson starts at PG for MU next year.  OK, may start, but be like Juan minutes.  You see that short bank shot airball he took?

Bottomline, got the big lead, no Cooley to deal with, senior day win and double bye.

And since we own all kinds of tiebreakers now, it's not just the double-bye but also a guaranteed top 3 finish.  Means if we don't get it, we'll avoid the #1 seed in the conference tournament in the semis should we win the first game.

I don't know man, I could definitely see him leaving still.  This run at MU has taken a toll on the man's body.  I sincerely hope he stays.  I think if we make a good run in both tourny's, and he comes back, MU is ranked hella high next year.  But we'll see.

I'm just glad Mike Patrick didn't smoke a trippy stick before the call this time and got Cadougan's name right.

He's back. Otherwise his parents are at center court in the spotlight with him and Buzz.

J. Anderson played well in first few minutes of the game, not good at all in 2nd half.
J. Wilson was huge
Lockett played well, but needs to get new shoes. Seemed to be only guy who was slipping out there and he did multiple times
Great to see O'tule have such a great game. He was 8-8, but his defense was great also.
Gardner - nothing went his way. Aside from leading the fast break, nothing seemed to go his way.  Poor effort on defensive boards.

Need to see a big game for VAnder this coming week.  He's had too good of a year to fall apart this late in the season and not get it back

This was the first game where Vander was obviously pressing, trying too hard to make something good happen.  He needs to relax and let the game come to him again...that's what was allowing him to be so good earlier in the season.

Agreed.  First time since very early season where he reminded me of last year.  That blocked layup with a little over a minute left after Lockett's clutch tie ball on JWil's missed MU FT and 35 seconds left on the shot clock was just not thinking.

I thought the first half today was a bit of fool's gold for us.  We weren't going to score like that pounding it into Chris and nailing 3s with any consistency.  We got a little full of ourselves late in the first half and made some careless turnovers and some guys were tight the last 10 minutes.

Anyway, so much good happened today you don't want to dwell on the negative.

The biggest positive was I thought team defense today, particularly through ND's first shot, was tremendous, as good as its been all year.

Anyways, moving on.

I hope Vander gets it going in the next few weeks. It's nice having these iter guys step up but I'd like to see vander clicking as we head into the tourney.

Guards game in college, always is and always will be.  Yes, you need some big bodies, but I want him back simply because he's earned it.

You called it. It has been heart breaking watching him suffer so many setbacks. And yet, he stayed the course and worked hard to hone his craft. His left and right hooks are testament to that.
