Title: Lowest seed the BE Regular season Champ has ever gotten??
Post by: muguru on February 26, 2013, 07:40:01 AM
If anyone has the time to research this, I'd be curious to know what it is. I'm not talking like going all the way back to the inception of the league, but perhaps liek back to 2000 or something. I'm GUESSING it has never been lower than a 2 seed. And I'd be floored if it's lower than a #3.

So what say you all...MU wins out and reaches the Championship game of the BET, what will they be seeded?? I say no way lower than a #2 in that scenario. They win the regular season championship outright, they may be no lower than a #2 regardless, unless they'd lose to a Depaul or something in the BET.

I don't think the committee looks at it like that.  If we win the Big East regular season we will be a 2 seed if the committee can't find 8 teams it likes better.  If we win out and make it to the BE championship game, I think we'll have a good shot at a 2, but not guaranteed, just as likely a 3.  But let's get there first.  First, we cannot let ND ruin another Senior Day.

I vaguely recall a team without a bye (before the double-bye days) that won the BET / Played every night to win.  So .. pretty sure a 7+ seed has won it.

UCONN won it all without a bye, and then won the NCAA.
IIRC

So did Syracuse when Gerry McNamera straight up willed them to win like 5 games in 5 nights. (Boehiem had a little mini meltdown in the press room talking about McNamera, who was sitting right there. It was weird.) They got into the Dance and if memory serves were not a good seed and bowed out early.

You're correct--either the BE champ or Tournament Champ has been seeded #1 or #2 since 2006.

However, nobody has won the league with more than 3 losses, where this year the winner will have at least 4.  We're treading new ground.

Here's the historic data:

2006: UConn & VIllanova tied for league (14-2)--both got #1 seeds
2006: Syracuse (7-9) won the conference tourney--#5 seed

2007 Georgetown 13-3 won both the league and tournament championship:  2 seed

2008: Georgetown 15-3 won the league titles (2 seed)
2008: Pitt (10-8) won the tourney, 4 seed

2009: UL (16-2) won both league and conference: (1 seed)

2010: Syracuse (15-3) won the league: 1 seed
2010: WVU (10-8) won the conf tourney: 2 seed

2011: Pitt (15-3) won the league: 1 seed
2011: UConn (9-9) won the tournament: 3 seed

2012: Syracues (17-1) won the league: 1 seed
2012: Louisville (10-8) won the tournaent: 4 seed

I think our chance for a #1 or #2 will rest upon how many of the following happen:
--We have to win the league title or the conference tournament.  2nd place and no league championship means we're probably no better than 3rd.

--We need some unexpected teams to win the Big Ten, SEC, B12, and ACC tournaments.  For example--ssuming they win their resgular season games (except against each other) if Duke and Miami reach the final game, they're likely both going to get a top 2 seed. However,  if UNC or Virgina upsets one of them in the ACC tourney, they could knock them out of contention.

--Gonzaga and New Mexico don't win out--if they win the rest of their games and their respective league tourneys, their RPI and record

Right.  And as pointed out, this year's winner will have more losses than in those other years (although in 06 and 07 you had a 16 games schedule) and in a slightly weaker league.  Whether we win the league or the tournament, it will only be viewed in the broader context of our RPI, SOS, late season trend, etc.  In addition, we are not viewed in a vacuum but relative to the other teams.  As of right now, being ranked 22, we have a long way to go to get to a #2 seed and to get there I think we need to win out in the regular season and not only make it to Saturday night in the tournament but knock off one of Louisville, Georgetown or Syracuse and play another one of them tight in the title game.

Minor point, but couldn't Georgetown still win out and only have 3 losses?

Hard to imagine us being a 1 or 2 seed unless we win our next 6 games (including BET), and very possibly not even then.

Hard to imagine us being lower than 3 seed if we win the regular-season title.

Hard to imagine us talking about this now having squat to do with the ND game. I mean, I talked about Davante's free-throw shooting before he swished his last two, you know? Jinxes aren't real.

I don't think we can get a 1-seed. Maybe if we win out, but with 7 losses, that just feels like too many. I know the nation on the whole is weak, but Gonzaga, Florida, and Kansas seem unlikely to lose more than one game each the rest of the year. Even if we win the Big East league and tournament, will we really get past Duke, Miami, Indiana, and Michigan for that last 1-seed? I find it unlikely. If we win out, I still think we get a 2 at best.

Yes, but I think the assumption was that they'd lose and we'd be the champ--or tied for it--hence the 4-loss comment.

If Georgetown wins the league title with only 3 losses, they'll likely be #1 or #2.
