Title: Georgetown a #1 Seed?
Post by: LAZER on February 25, 2013, 10:25:16 AM
Seems like they have a legit shot and if they keep playing well they could give MU a real nice marquee win.  If MU can pull of the win against Syracuse tonight and if Wisconsin and UConn keep playing well they could have 4 wins against top 25 RPI's.

Barring a collapse in the BET, G-Town is a lock for a #1 seed if they can hold serve against Syracuse in a couple weeks.  Of course, this assumes they don't lay an egg in their other three games (@UCONN, Rutgers, @Nova).

Assuming no eggs:
Indiana should get the overall #1, and Gonzaga might* get the second.  Georgetown (with a win vs. Syracuse in two weeks) should get one of the remaining #1's.  Depending on how far Miami(FL) falls this week, Duke or Miami(FL) will probably land the fourth unless either Michigan or MSU runs the table.

*Wild Card -- New Mexico is currently #3 RPI while Gonzaga - despite gaining #1 votes in the AP - is #10 RPI.  This might cause some consternation for the committee who usually doesn't like to put MWC and WCC teams on the 1-lines.

Syracuse could sneak back into the discussion with two big road win opportunities yet in front of them.  Louisville probably needs to win the BET.  Kansas, Arizona, Florida are all in the same boat -- recent and/or bad losses coupled with no more more games against ranked opponents (i.e. redemption) means that they probably need to win their tourney and a lot has to go wrong for the other teams mentioned above.

And for those playing the game at home, MU's ceiling at this point is the top 2-seed.  Even if they win the Big East outright and the BET, I don't think the committee would place MU higher than fifth overall.

Your conditional lock is anything but a lock. You write off those other three games as if they should win them with ease. The games @UCONN and @Nova will be very difficult. They have a long way to go before they're squarely in the conversation.

Aside from the fact that a conditional lock is exactly that (conditional), I certainly didn't write anything off... in fact, I made a very specific disclaimer that addresses your counter-point.

Granted, it's tough to win on the road this late in the year, but yes, I think Georgetown should still handle UConn and Nova on the road and Rutgers at home.  I'm likely going to turn out wrong in that regard because there is no clear-cut #1 team nationally or in the Big East... so if you want to take issue with that, I'm not going to argue with you.  But if you think Georgetown doesn't have a chance at a #1 seed regardless of what they do, why are you going after me? There's a fat, juicy, defenseless ESPN article ripe for tearing apart.
