Saw this new thread on the college basketball sub-reddit... I was pleasantly surprised to see more than a few people root for Marquette when not cheering their own squad. Always curious to see how the program is perceived outside of our MU bubble. Some love of our unis as well.
The question asked, "what team do you root for besides your main team?"
For me, it's Michigan State.... Also a very popular choice in the reddit thread.

It used to be Indiana for me...that has obviously changed. I've also always rooted for DePaul and I still do.
I side with Michigan as that is my college football team.
For me it's Northwestern. I live close enough to see games and see them cheaply, and I want to see them make the tournament one of these years.

Due to my home state and their ascension at the same time Marquette was floundering with Dukiet, I root for UConn when they're not playing us. Also root for Fairfield (local Jesuit where two siblings attended-I love college bb and go to 4 or 5 of their games a year) and now Lehigh.
My son is a freshman at Lehigh. He was trying to decide between Lehigh and a few other schools (alas, none of which were Marquette) last year when the Duke-Lehigh NCAA game started. I have a big two day party for the first two days of the NCAAs and several of his friends were there. Before the game started I told him, "You have to go to Lehigh if they beat Duke." He shrugged it off and said, "Sure, Dad," figuring that never in a million years would Lehigh beat Duke. During the game there was a running joke about their atrocious cheerleaders, who were rather plump, to put it mildly. After the game all his friends and my friends were getting on him telling him he had to go to Lehigh. And sure enough, he did.

Until they replace Carmody, that tournament appearance is never going to happen. He's been there 13 years, more than enough time to develop the program and at least make an appearance or two.
Butler, even after going to Maui and having their fans go nuts right by us. What a game.
Northwestern. How can you not cheer for them? Maybe it will pass if they ever get into the tourney.
Michigan State. Hard to hate Izzo.
Gonzaga. Really hope we can find some way to get them into the new conference.
MSU. Closest geographically, younger brother went there and I partied like a rockstar there with him. Izzo can flat out coach.

Nebraska - duh! Unfortunately, NU has been completely unwatchable since 1998 (Tyronn Lue!). Bring back Danny Nee!
I also root for Creighton but kind of get a kick out of their annual flameouts in the tourney. So, so soft.

Regardless of the coach, I don't envision NU ever makin' a splash in college hoops. It's just not a priority or a part of their culture. And that's ok. Somethin' neat about the "purity" of collegiate athletics.

Indiana was always my second favorite team in the days BC. I'm all MU now.

I think that's a thing of the past at NU. They've had some pretty decent success in football, their women's lacrosse team is a juggernaut and their AD is making a big push in Chicago with his "Chicago's Big Ten team" slogan and recently signing an agreement with the Cubs to play baseball, lacrosse and, yes, more football games at Wrigley. Their advertising is all over the place. This is a new time for Northwestern and I think Carmody has to go and will go after this year. They've got no business, injuries or not, getting their doors blown off at home.
He seems like a good guy, but they need somebody in their who's going to fight for recruits and create excitement. He's Northwestern's answer to Terri Mitchell.
It is great to see the MU love. I think there is more support out there for MU than many would think. A few years ago we did some work for Gear For Sports. When they found I was an MU fan they said that MU labeled stuff had always been unusually strong given the size of the school. Back in the Final 4 year the MU stuff they sold was way out of proportion to their normal Final 4 team sales and helped them make their year. :)

It is Northwestern for me as well. Despite living in Chicago all my life, I can't understand why the city doesn't get behind them (at least for football).
Fitzgerald is a really good coach and a outstanding representative of the school. I think he gets more out of his players, given the constraints of NU's requirements, than any other coach in the Bigwhatever.
I'd like Carmody to succeed, however I think patience is wearing thin. But he does have one of his best recruiting classes coming in and Evan Eschmeyer is coming back for a 12th year.
I was hoping that Swopshire (louisville) would have made a bigger impact this year than he did.

I didn't realize that apathy could be described as neat and pure.
You're right, NU is never going to make a splash on the hoops scene. But, c'mon, they should be able to make the tournament once a decade.
If schools like Stanford and Vandy can have hoops success, there's no reason why the Cats can't either. NU's own football success shows that it can be done.

They're my second team too. After them is probably G'Town when they're not playing us, along with the teams playing Wisconsin, ND, and Louisville.
Very much so. I have siblings in Lincoln and Omaha and my parents are also still in Nebraska. CU brings a great fan base and some tradition. They are geographically out of the way, but their success neutralizes that somewhat. Compared to Dayton and Richmond, CU is a slam dunk. Compared to SLU, it's very close.

Scheel's is big sports store chain. They carry a lot of college apparel. The store in Lincoln had a four foot section of MU gear. My buddy works there and says it really sells well. My brother is a high school coach in Lincoln. Every year, he has 1-2 kids wearing MU shorts in practice. It blows my mind considering our size, but the jerseys are apparently a big draw. Wade helps for sure.

It's so awesome to hear the MU love. Especially considering how little we get from non-alumni in Wisconsin. Since moving to Denver from Milwaukee 3 years ago, I'd say probably 97% of people either don't know Marquette or think I'm wearing stuff for/about Marquette, MI.
The other 3% know and, surprisingly, are supportive.
I've met more than a few KU fans/alumni and all of them are fans/supporters of MU. I feel like it's how I feel about UK: I don't mind Kentucky and, in fact, will root for them. Why wouldn't I? We beat them as the #1 overall to go to the Final Four in 2003. No hate from me. :)
On the flip side, I've met a number of UK fans in Vegas the opening weekend of the tournament and all of them spit acid when they see my MU gear. :D

I've found this is definitely true. UK fans don't really think about MU often, but they havent forgotten and still root against MU to this day.
That Thread made my day! After MU I also root for Duke all the way. Also love to see Kansas St. do well because I almost went there....And of course Utah State!<<<Best Student section in the country!

Creighton. Born and raised in Omaha with so many family having gone there. Would LOVE to see them in the new league and think it'll happen.
Princeton, Rutgers and anybody playing Duke or UNC. One of my all-time NCAA favorites was watching the University of Pennsylvania and St. Johns beat Duke and UNC down in Charlotte on the same day back in the early 80s. Billy Packer was in tears. Remember him? And is the reason I hate the ACC and in particular Duke and UNC so much.
After the Warriors, it's Northwestern Wildcats for me. Started with my daughter's enrollment and resulted in my football season tickets (actually not a bad drive and, oh so much more enjoyable than madison) for the 12th year. Occaisionally make a mbb game there-like a big high school gym, lots of fun.
Agree about Carmody not doing the job, but can make several decent excuses for him. Besides the injuries this year, he lost a great player a few years ago. Kevin Kouble and John Shurna (IIRC) would have been deadly together. Also feel some loyalty to Carmody after he stepped in when KONeil bailed late in the summer. Could have been the demise of the program altogether. Instead, I feel it's stepped up since the point shaving days of Birdsong's regime.

Actually I am with you. I am all in for Michigan football but I am ambivalent about their basketball. When Marquette was sh1t I tried to root for them but it wasn't right.

That may be a little harsh. I mean, I understand, but he is also the most successful coach they've had there. It is a tough place to build the program. He has had more success than Kevin O'Neill or Tex Winter did.
