I'm from St. Louis so naturally I was listening to the Cards-Cubs game this afternoon on the radio on 550 KTRS. They had Digger Phelps as one of the two broadcasters calling the game so not surprisingly it quickly turned from a baseball broadcast to a college basketball analysis. During the second rain delay Digger and the other announcer were talking college bball and through different topics he probably mentioned Tom Crean's name and Marquette basketball at least 5 or 6 times. He praised MU for everything from having a solid big name program to TC for being one of the few coaches who really cares about his players on a personal level to being one of the top coaches at getting his players ready for the next level. Like I said, it was simply a college basketball discussion and we got great praise on 5 or 6 separate occassions. Being a major radio station during a big game, I'm sure plenty of people heard the comments and now have a new view about MU...especially in an area that knows little about MU because of our own Jesuit school, SLU.
looks like we may have some extra applications from the St. Louis area in coming years.
Another reason to hate Tom Crean....MU gets mentioned outside of Milwaukee now.

Right on, brother! ;D
Actually, MU has a large St. Louis base, including a significant number of St. Louis students and a pretty big alumni asscociation. My wife is an administrator/teacher at one of St. Louis' top academic boys schools and it always has a 1 or 2 students attend MU. Even in the 60's when I attended MU, there were lots of St. Louis students. Indeed, two of my best friends were from here and Schroeder Hall was full of them. (St. Louis)
TC does a good job of massaging those guys at ESPN----must be on the phone to someone there constantly. TC gets an A+ on the PR !
"TC gets an A+ on the PR !"....
TC gets a C- on plays called after a timeout!
Whether we like it or not, PR and marketing are a major part of the modern college coach's job.
That's why college coaching is so difficult. A coach has 5 or 6 jobs wrapped into one. Basketball coach, teacher, mentor, spokesman, salesman, etc.
I don't think Crean is perfect any any of these, but you have to respect the amount of progress he has made at MU in his tenure.
Like it or not, he probably needs to keep himself and MU in the media in order to compete. I love MU... but we aren't exactly Duke... yet.

In the past I might agree with you, but not the last two years. The plays after timeouts have been quite good.
