Cubillan cut from national team
David Cubillan will join the Marquette Golden Eagles on their Labor Day trip to Vancouver after all.
That's because the sophomore guard was recently cut from the Venezuelan National Team, for which he'd played over the summer as it prepared for the FIBA Americas Cup.
Venezuela kicks off play in the Americas Cup on Wednesday against the United States in Las Vegas, and had Cubillan remained with the team there was a chance he would have missed some or all of the four exhibition games MU has scheduled in Vancouver, British Columbia.
But after an 0-5 performance in the Stankovic Cup, which was played in China, and another exhibition loss to Spain, changes to the squad were made and Cubillan wound up on the outside looking in.
"It is unfortunate that David will not be able to continue to represent his country at this time, which I know is very important to him," coach Tom Crean said in a statement. "We are hopeful the opportunity will return in the near future. He has had an outstanding summer and we look forward to his return."
Cubillan, a native of Mara Caibo, Venezuela, hit 48 of his three-point attempts at a team-best 42.5% clip for the Golden Eagles last season.
