Title: Jameel McKay
Post by: Norm on February 01, 2013, 09:59:00 PM
Has anyone been able to watch Jameel Mckay play this season? He seems to be having a great season at Indian Hills CC. He is averaging a double-double for the season: 18.4 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. He has scored in double figures every game, including 9 games with 20+ points and 2 games with 30+ points. He has 13 double-doubles out of 23 games played. He is also shooting 60% from the floor (although his free throw shooting is only at 55%).

He is listed as 6'8". If that height is true, and Otule stays next season, MU could have a 3-4 headed monster under the basket with Gardner, Otule, Taylor and McKay. That could be a really nice rotation, with 2 of them in at a time next year.

I believe that Jameel stated over the summer that he had grown and was now 6'9" or 6'9" and a half.

Asked the guy that runs the juco recruiting service about McKay. Said he is a high motor blue collar guy inside that fights for everything and is a good finisher. Used the actual words "love his play." I am really excited to see him in uniform next year.

All good to hear.  Kind of funny, we have seemingly transformed from a team of 'mites' (Hoosier term) back in the Acker/Cooby era to a team with a solid low post originated offense.  What pleases me most is that Buzz has grown as a coach and can adapt his style to his talent.  Even this year I imploring our guys not to rush a quick inopportune shot for fear that a miss will result on a breakout on the other end.

What's so much fun about college hoops is watching a coach evaluate his talent every year and then 'rebuild the house' as Buzz would say.  Looks like he'll have some damn good steel I-beams to work with next year.  Guess that means Vander will be the fancy kitchen with the Subzero fridge and the granite counter tops.  I still picture Davante as Mr. Awesome Man-Cave!

If Otule returns, what do we do with McKay?    No minutes to be had up front.    Can you redshirt a JUCO transfer?

He's not going to redshirt and there will be plenty of minutes.  We will be short on experienced guards and can actually play big.

Play him at the 4.  Unless he's bulked up it'll be the best position for him at this level.

I read McKay's quote too, that he had grown to 6'9+.  Hi stats this year are outstanding.  Can't wait for him to play for Marquette.  MU basketball continues to get better and better under Buzz!

I don't mind if Chris comes back.  He already plays fairly limited minutes, so it will be nice to have a true center with Davante and Jameel.  I think McKay can play alongside either of our big bodies too which will be nice.  Juan, Jamil and even Taylor can play the three.  I like our versatility in the front court next year.

I agree. Chris dosen't get all that many minutes this year. With him having foot problems I like the fact he plays limited minutes. In the long run it will benefit both him and the team this year and next if he comes back.

"Redshirting" isn't an action. You can play him or not play him - your choice.

With regard to his 4 years of competition eligibility that would be fine - 2 years gone on his 5 year clock, so when he gets to MU he'll have 3 years to use 2 years of competition.

I'm wondering how a 6'9 200 point guy will fair down low. Is he face up type player? Taylor is a few inches shorter but weighs 30 more pounds. Trend blackledge was 190 pounds as a comparison, same height.

Trend was a shot blocker, who didn't put up the points that McKay does in JUCO.

If he is good enough, and by what folks are saying he is, there will be plenty of minutes available for McKay.

It will be an adjustment for sure.  From what I've seen McKay plays inside and can hit some mid range jumpers as well.  He seems like a crafty player and isn't afraid to mix it up inside, so hopefully the weight isn't a deal breaker.
