With the men's college basketball regular season just past the halfway point, here are the ratings for most nationally televised games so far.
To the surprise of presumably few, the college basketball season has not been a huge draw thus far. Of the 316 games on CBS, ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU through last Sunday, only 26 earned at least a 1.0 U.S. rating. Keep in mind this does not include the December 29 Kentucky/Louisville game on CBS, which would likely bring the total to 27.
The sheer amount of college basketball games no doubt plays a contributing factor — there are numerous nationally televised games on competing networks.
The top rating of the season thus far was a 2.0 for Duke/Kentucky on ESPN November 13 and Temple/Kansas on CBS January 6. The latter had a direct lead-in from the NFL playoffs.
Rounding out the top five games of the season are North Carolina/Indiana on ESPN November 27 (1.8), and a pair of games last Saturday — Ohio State/Michigan State (1.6) and Syracuse/Louisville (1.6), both on ESPN.

I wonder what the numbers will be when we play Louisville on Super Bowl Sunday.
What does a mid level, non-conference college football game usually get?
563K for Wisconsin game was the highest.

What does a mid level, non-conference college football game usually get?
College football can draw anywhere from 0.8 to 5.0 rating for most games.
Alabama-LSU, ND-USC, Alabama-Georgia were the top three games with around 10.0 ratings.
Even the Sun Belt & MAC games you see fall on Tuesday & Wednesday nights draws around 0.4 to 1.1 ratings.

Probably pretty poor. Most people will have the pre-game on.

It's a 1pm game, well before the Super Bowl. MU's first time on ESPN. Both teams should be ranked. I bet it will be Marquette most watched viewership of the season to date.
To give you an idea on the ratings.
The USC vs Notre Dame regular season football game drew 16,059,000 viewers. That was a regular season game.
The Final Four in 2012 drew 15,256,000 viewers.
The NCAA championship game drew 20,869,000 viewers...that's the only college basketball game that trumped the a regular season tilt with USC vs Notre Dame.
The Sweet 16 did 5,224,000 viewers
Elite 8 did 9,361,000.
On the NFL front...48,676,000 viewers watched last year's AFC title game. 57,635,000 watched the NFC title game.....and of course the Super Bowl was over 110M.
Even a regular season NFL game can draw nearly 30M as the final Cowboys game hit 29M
No one watched the MU-Colgate game?

Correct, I believe it was one of the highest rated regular season games in history.
If the ACC starts getting poached, this is why you move heaven and earth to get ND into the C7 fold, if possbile.

Average game, no. It was the highest rated season game of the year.
My point is still that college football absolutely destroys college basketball in the ratings....it ain't close. Even a regular season game against a 5 loss USC team late at night, on the west coast with ND outdraws every college basketball game except the national championship.
When college basketball games get a 1.0 or higher rating, the execs are cheering wildly. It doesn't happen very often. Football does that without breaking a sweat. BYU vs Hawaii in football did a 1.0. Pitt vs Syracuse did a 1.0 this year in football. It's such a different animal. There were over 50 college games that did over a 2.5 this year, many doing above a 4.0 and that's before even getting into the bowl games...those are regular season or conference championship games.

Not arguing that football does not destroy b-ball but what one thing this fails to compare is content. I mean there are only so many games they can put on for college football. And they are not spread out as well as college basketball in terms of days of the week and timeslots.
Kentucky basketball may not compare to Alabama football in the ratings game but isn't there something to be said that games can be aired Monday through Sunday and there are usually 35 plus of them versus 13 Alabama games?
Again, I completely understand why football gets the $$ it does over b-ball but with all of these channels propping up for live television at least basketball can deliver any time, any day and for a longer period of time.
It's sheer numbers as well as the popularity of FB.
Only 127 D-1 FB teams > 347 D-1 BK teams

Now CBB, you know that this is a bad example. The ND/USC game was one of the extraordinary events in TV history hand you act like it was just another Saturday night game:
http://articles.southbendtribune.com/2012-11-28/sports/35419353_1_irish-schedule-viewers-usc
Notre Dame football's renaissance season had broadcast partner NBC smiling all the way to the bank.
Imagine now what it's doing for the folks at ABC.
Last Saturday's clash in Los Angeles between No. 1 Notre Dame and unranked USC drew more than 16 million viewers, making it
the most-watched contest involving the Irish on any network since 1993, their third year in which NBC started exclusively broadcasting ND home games.
It was also the most-watched regular-season college football game since 2006, the most-viewed ABC Saturday night game ever, the fifth-most-watched regular-season game involving any teams on any network since at least 1991 and the most-watched regular-season game not involving a 1-vs.-2 matchup since 1991.Ratings figures prior to 1991 are unavailable.
The Irish (12-0) took down preseason No. 1 USC, 22-13, to lock down a spot in the BCS National Championship Game, Jan. 7 in Miami. Their opponent will be determined in Saturday's SEC Championship Game in Atlanta between No. 2 Alabama (11-1) and No. 3 Georgia (11-1).

Now if you insist on using this game as a benchmark, then compare it to this game:
Duke/UNC Earns ESPN's Fourth-Best Men's College Hoops AudiencePosted by Paulsen | 03/06/2012 at 9:29 pm
http://www.sportsmediawatch.com/2012/03/dukeunc-earns-espns-fourth-best-mens-college-hoops-audience/
The Duke/North Carolina rivalry attracted one of the largest audiences ever for a college basketball game on ESPN.
Saturday's Duke/North Carolina game earned a 2.7 U.S. rating and 4.247 million viewers on ESPN, flat in ratings and down 8% in viewership from last year's comparable meeting between the teams (DUKE/UNC: 2.7, 4.611M, CBS), and up 69% and 70%, respectively, from the comparable meeting in 2010 (UNC/DUKE: 1.6, 2.498M, ESPN).
The game ranks as the fourth-most viewed men's college basketball game on ESPN since at least 1990, behind only Duke/North Carolina in March 2006 (4.702M), Tennessee/Memphis in February 2008 (5.281M), and North Carolina/Duke in March 2008 (5.612M). For the week, Duke/North Carolina ranked as the sixth-highest rated (tie) and ninth most-viewed program on cable television.
The first matchup between Duke and North Carolina this season earned a 2.2 and 3.121 million viewers. This marks the first time since the 2008-09 season that both Duke/North Carolina regular season games have drawn at least a 2.0 rating.
----
So the extraordinary ND/USC game had 4 times the audience than the extraordinary Duke/UNC game. That said, their are almost 4 times as many college basketball games as college football games. So, the gross audiences are nearly equal.
