It's intriguing, but I vote no.  Basketball only is the way to go.

I'll take UConn and Cincy over Dayton and VCU.

Two comments:

  • These two schools' football programs will take a huge dive, so much so the ACC won't want them.
  • I feel sorry for USF

If I'm the Big 12, I'm all over USF.  Get a foothold in the state of Florida.  It's a win win for both sides.  Lifeblood of recruiting is that state and expands the conference footprint.  It gives the Texas schools another strong base and allows USF to finally play on a bigger stage.  Allows for a bit of a rivalry setup with West Virginia as well.

I voted yes.   But only if they are teams 11 and 12 or 13 and 14 (10 solid first, including X and Butler), and with a HUGE buyout.  We absolutely do not need them, but it would make the conference outstanding from day one.

Take the best teams you can get, take the big east name too.  Take butler and X if that works.

Vote yes

I'm not sure why everyone is so opposed to this.  Sure I know that these teams will bolt in a minute if they get a chance but that won't endanger us as long as the core of the C-7 stays strong.  Right now the goal should be to get the C-7 started and as strong out of the gate as possible.  These guys joining would give us a stronger league to start and a lot more leverage over the current Big East in negotiating the deal as we all depart.  Then once we're up and running let'um go if they want to.  We'll collect their exit fees and NCAA credits.  Then we'll raid the A-10 or go after the Zags/St Mary's to replace them.
On a side note what would happen to UCONN and Cinc football teams if they did come.  There are virtually no independent Football schools besides ND.  After mid Sept would UCONN and Cinc just play each other for 6 or 7 times?  That would effectively kill their football programs.

The opposition to this must all be emotional. We have way more to gain by including them, even if it's only for one or two years.

I'm a solid "yes" on UCONN and an "I guess" on Cincinnati.  If UCONN is any team above team 10 they won't negatively affect stability.  In fact, their success will help prove the brand of the new conference.  Does Cincinnati hold much value anymore?  We have the market covered in Xavier.  Wouldn't it make more sense to get an equally competitive team in a different market (Creighton)?  However, I'd prefer continuing a rivalry with them.

With UCONN and/or Cincinnati, Dayton/St. Louis/Creighton will still be out there to provide a replacement when they leave (or you could just have 10 teams once the network has more other content).

The whole point of bringing them along would be to make the exit/re-entry into the Big East easier. Dropping Cincy for someone else doesn't help that.  We could dissolve the league, avoid paying exit fees, start right away next year, retain NCAA credits, keep MSG, keep the Big East name, and still collect the exit fees from Syracuse, Pitt, ND, Louisville, and ND.  Then they can go to the ACC or Big 12 in a few years and we can collect their exit fees then. And in the meantime they can help us get a bigger TV contract. I think it's brilliant.

How can we dissolve the league...yet somehow manage to keep MSG and still collect exit fees?

How can we dissolve the league, collect fees, keeps MSG, develop high speed rail between Spokane and Chicago, and convince Uconn and Memphis to dissolve their football programs?

I voted no and don't think it's emotional at all. Over the past 20 years, the Big East has meant two things to the casual sports fan: awesome basketball and conference upheaval. I feel that this new conference can carry on the former while removing the latter. I realize UConn and UC would bring quality on the court. But for how long. 1 year? 2? Maybe 3-4 at best? No one would think it was permanent, and when they left, all those casual sports fans would realize that the new Big East was the same as the old Big East.

This move isn't just about basketball, or football, or money, it's about controlling our own destiny. And the longer we stay tethered to the UConns and Cincys of the world the longer we are sacrificing that freedom in an acknowledgment that we need them. But we DON'T need them. We can create a league that can be one of the nation's best at basketball while not jumping at shadows every time the ACC gets a bug up their ass about expanding.

I really think the emotional side is the side that thinks we can hold on to the past. That UConn and Cincy represent some lost glory. Well, they don't. The glory is lost. It was lost when Syracuse and Pitt walked out that door, and any hope of regaining it was lost when WVU, Louisville, and Notre Dame followed. The old Big East is over. So let go of it. Let the emotion go. Accept that the best possible future is one in which we don't pine for a past that cannot be reconstructed.

If they want to agree to a non-negotiable $50M exit fee and forfeiture of 10 years of all television rights, basketball AND football, then let them in. Anything less, forget it. We don't need them, and it's time to move on.

I voted yes. However, the C7 should create their 12 team conference before deciding to add Uconn and Cincy. That way, if they leave, the C7 will be were they would of been, if they did not add Cincy & Uconn in the first place.

Uconn yes, Cincy no. They aren't a package deal. I could live with one of them for a few years. It would probably help the transition too with keeping the BE name, MSG and the exit fees might be lower with UCONN on board. I think it would be cool to take one without the other just to show who is in charge. Cincy can go back to playing Tulane and East Carolina.

Ahh yes....take them, give them a decent exit fee to pay....C7 with the TV deal it gets would still be a major upgrade to potential teams left on the outside...such as Dayton and SLU....they'd be there for the taking when UCONN/Cincy leave...but in the short run....yes, it would be a lot more fun to see Cincy and UCONN on the schedule instead of SLU and Dayton...

There is NO downside to adding them now...none...it isn't like the conference is going to then face a bunch of other non-football playing schools defecting for other conferences...once UCONN and Cincy leave..as has happened in the Big East..

They play football and want to play in a football conference, correct? That would be an easy no then.

Adding UC and UConn is a short-term answer for a long-term question.  Stay away.
