Title: CBS Interested
Post by: Dish on January 09, 2013, 10:46:26 AM
Sean McManus is interested in obtaining the broadcast rights for the C7 +.

This can only be viewed as a good thing.

If ESPN gets involved, things could get really interesting. The C7 seems to be Fox's big ticket/foray into college basketball so I'm guessing they'll go to great lengths to make sure they have the conference under contract even if that means a bad taste in their mouth for overspending.

I doubt ESPN gets involved, I think NBC is more likely. And right now, it's the ESPN competitors that are dishing out the super-bucks (see NBC and the EPL deal) to try to find programming that will help them compete with ESPN.

Part of me is glad of that...I'm kind of fed up with the 4-letter network. And I'd love to be part of a new legitimate competitor to ESPN.

[...] a new legitimate competitor to ESPN.

ESPN desperately needs competition. They are complacent and their product suffers for it. See: coverage of Tebow, everything Skip Bayless and Herm Edwards says/does.

On the other hand, I already pay too much for cable.  I'm pretty tired of all the ridiculous numbers being thrown about for all of the sports rights and the fact that these companies/sports leagues seem to think that the public has an unlimited supply of cash to keep absorbing these larger and larger costs that we all know get thrown down to the consumer to cover eventually.

+1  Their motivating force used to be proving that they could exist.  They haven't had anything to compete with in years and it shows.

ESPN would be worth it if they brought back Cheap Seats.

No, the worst thing ever was when they actually aired Magic: The Gathering tournaments on ESPN2.

They would air anything in 1997.

It wouldn't be surprising to see Mickey get involved just to keep Rupert from getting into his theme park.  That mouse is a dirty, little p-Richard.

Villanova is one of the seven Catholic basketball schools that is breaking off from the Big East to form a new league.

The seven Catholic basketball schools who have broken away from the Big East have begun exploring TV deals.

Representatives of the schools — DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, Seton Hall, St. John's and Villanova — were meeting Wednesday in New York with representatives from Fox Sports, a person with direct knowledge of the discussions confirmed to USA TODAY Sports. SI.com first reported the discussions.

The person, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the discussions, said that a deal is not expected to be done soon because the group has not decided how many teams its new league will have.

CBS Sports chairman Sean McManus told USA TODAY Sports on Tuesday that "we're already interested (in the new league) and have expressed our interest to them."

Like NBC's cable channel and a Fox sports channel expected to be launched this year, McManus said the new league could provide more event programming to the CBS Sports Network cable channel.

The seven schools and the Big East are in talks to determine the timing of the group's exit.

That would be CBS Sports Network.

While I like and have CBS SN. It's only in 40 million homes and most have to get it on a sports tier pass.
