.....gives credit to Buzz for his time out call.

Of the 15,000 people in the stands, I bet 14,500 knew he was going to make a time out call there. Not exactly Wooden-esque.
QuoteStarks got a huge strip and raced downcourt for a layup that tied it at 46 with 2 minutes 11 seconds remaining.
That's when Marquette unveiled another weapon: A videotaped message from Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, whose face flashed on the giant scoreboard, saying: "Hey Marquette! I can't hear you!" The crowd of 15,433 shot to its feet and cheered for the frantic final minutes.
Otherwise, we would have sat quietly and waited for the outcome. Good call, Jumbotron director!
QuoteAnd Marquette's bench contributed 16 points, with massive 6-foot-8, 290-pound junior forward Davante Gardner worth his weight in gold.
Heh.

Of course. Not sure why everyone is going nuts over this. What coach wouldn't do that. You setup your play if he misses, you setup your play if he makes it, you ice the shooter, etc, etc. Why wouldn't anyone make that timeout call?

I don't see anybody "going nuts" about this, but if icing the shooter is such a no brainier I wonder why Jim Calhoun didn't do it to DJO and Tom Crean didn't do it to Wallace when they both (in rhythm) hit 3 straight free throws to send games into OT. By the way, Calhoun and Crean both lost those games.
+1
It was definitely Aaron Rodgers who won this game for us.
Call me an idiot, but I thought the Aaron Rodgers' messages out of the timeouts really ignited the crowd.
ARod messages are a great idea during break, but probably not when classes are in session, given the large Chicago-centric portion of the student body. ;)

I suippose they could put a Cutler video up there, nut the boos would drownd out the cheers. ;)

Because it's like icing the kicker. Some do it, some don't, but it's not a genius coaching move either way.

Tom Crean did call time out. :o You were saying? The memory is one of the first things to go with age, Lenny. ;)

LOL. Guess it's time for me to stop relying on my recollections and "go to the tape".
The UCONN game was either 2009-10 or 2010-11 at Connecticut. DJO hit 3 free throws to send the game into OT. We won in overtime.
Look it up - I'm probably wrong on the t.o./no t.o. on this one also :)

Nearly positive that Calhoun (or Blaney? He's coached so many games against us) DID NOT call timeout to ice DJO
In the book Scorecasting when they studied "icing", there was no statistical difference between time out or not. The shooter made his average in this case (66%) but the time out helped Buzz set that he wanted if there was a make. Didn't hurt to break his concentration, though. Making three FT's in a row on the road is not an easy task. Credit the crowd if anyone.

Did not...Lenny is correct. Though the circumstances were a little different. There were 41 seconds left in that game.

Simple minded crowd enjoys simple minded message.
That's why the Aaron Rodgers bit was played approximately 17 times in the last five minutes of the game. It was the only thing the lame crowd responded to for those two hours.

On Saturday, Buzz had multiple timeouts remaining with less than 3 seconds in the game. It made absolute perfect sense for Buzz to call timeout there, not necessarily to ice the shooter, but to go through options with the team. What if he makes? What play do we run if he misses?
That's why I thought it was obvious that the timeout would be called. Icing the shooter was only part of the equation, and frankly Buzz may not have thought it was important.

this. Maybe Whittington only hit two of three because he's a 61% FT shooter.

I agree (except for the what play do we run if he misses since we wouldn't need to run a play if he missed). He likely wanted to a) remind them to call another timeout if the free throw was made b) box out and go hard after the rebound if missed and c) ice the shooter.
IMO all were important - a 62% ft shooter who has just made 2 and is in a rhythm is one I'd like to make pause and reflect on the importance of the situation.

Not sure what game you were attending on Saturday afternoon.....
I thought the crowd was decently engaged for a game held during Christmas break. There were a crapload of timeouts and other delays towards the end, and I thought whoever was running the Jumbotron did a decent job given that he had run out of all the scheduled timeout bits. I was rather entertained by the running gag of showing people wearing Packers jerseys (massive cheering by the crowd) alternating with one guy that was wearing a Viking jersey (massive booing). Also a good call to include that guy's incredibly mortified girlfriend in the shot each time as well.
I'm with you, chick. Simple minded me thought the Aaron Roger's stuff was great (and obviously effective).

I agree as well. I attended the game with my son who is currently a Georgetown student. He was very impressed with our student section, given the semester break, and the over all atmosphere in comparison to games at the Verizon Center. Or he was simply being nice to the old man. Either way.

Nope, he was accurate. Georgetown games are lacking in crowd enthusiasm unless they are playing Syracuse.

First a Buff. Then a Badger. Now a Hoya. So he can ski circles around me, shops at Whole Foods, and now has D.C. plates. I've failed as a parent.

Nicely done. One was Badger, one was Panther and soon will have two at MU. Time flies my friend.

People needed the typical jumbotron antics because the game wasn't providing the entertainment. With most everyone in that building counting down minutes until the Packers game, the point was that the Rodgers clip running over and over and over and over and over and over was done because it was one of the two (three?) things to get people riled up.
Admittedly, I've been involved with most every great atmosphere over the last near two decades so my standards are probably out of sync with some here but disjointed ball, a team looking awful coming off two week break, half-filled upper deck with many seats open in lower deck, and semester break lead to a shoulder shrug experience.
