Title: Buzz's best coaching move yet
Post by: JD on January 05, 2013, 03:15:16 PM
I thought he was genius to call that time out on the foul shooter.  As soon as I criticize his coaching yesterday he proves me wrong.

Well done coach!

Makes up for his play call out of the TO and decision not to foul.

No brainer.

Yep. Every coach would do that.

Would be more impressed if he called for the deliberate foul up three with under ten seconds to play, rather than run the risk of fouling on a three point shot.

The assistants had to tell him to tell Trent to miss the last ft.

Yeah, his assistants need to tell him when a good decision is made and when something he does works it's a no brainer that any coach in the world would do. And coaches shoukd have to worry about their player fouling on a 3 inside 5 seconds while up by 3. Buzz can't coach. Let's hope Texas sucks, LW and Padre P continue to mess with his happiness, and Texas comes a callin this off season  ::)

i listened to rick majerus explain it on espn one time.  he said he wouldn't, as it's the only way to loose the game (make 2 free throws and rebound/score on the third freethrow).  also said the data behind it was 50/50.

the timeout call by buzz was solid...even better was his decision to pull the quick sub to get otule in on defense who drew the charge, and gardner back in for offense/free throws.  i wonder what assistant told him to do that?

I don't think anything said here was that unreasonable.  Seemed like fair observations to me, I don't think anyone here thinks Buzz is a bad coach, just a little critique.

I don't get why everyone wanted to foul right away? I don't think MU is a great free throw shooting team, an I would rather let our defense decide the game for us. I thought we did stellar on the defensive end, let em play

because not every coach in the nation fouls in that situation, and buzz' assistants "having" to tell him to have trent miss the freethrow is 1. their job  2. gives some credit to buzz for hiring them  3.  may not be the right move if he misses the rim and GTown throws it to their rim for laettner shot or tip.  don't think it mattered with 1 second left, but props to lockett for leaving his feet to block the last second shot...

Buzz said on the post game with Homer that J Wilson is not very good on the FT box out and Davante may have been too tired at the end, so he did not want to depend on them to get the rebound.

Who got the rebound on the missed 3rd freethrow? Trent did - from the third position from the basket....meaning it bounced out far enough that Georgetown had a chance to get it. Fouling is not a gimme.

Yet they occupied the two spots closest to the basket.

I was surprised at the lack of attacking of the lane on the last missed G-town FT.   Nobody from G-town crashing from the top of the key.   As far as JWilson and DG still being in the game, regardless of how tired they are, we want them shooting FT's instead of Juan and CO.

If anyone listened to Buzz' post game, he pretty much said he didn't have faith in Jam and Gardner getting the rebound off an intentional miss so, that's why he didn't foul. Considering that I am totally cool what he did.  Lockett on the other hand...
