Cheering "Aut-o-mat-ic (clap-clap clap-clap-clap)" when Gardner is at the line, in your end, is friggin' ridiculous.
Yes, it's a bit nit-picky, but I never saw a student section cheering out loud when their own guy is at the line. It was weird.

I think it's been established (I'm too lazy to do the search) that Davante actually likes that chant.
Those guys had shirts made about themselves and the automatic chant.
It is weird, yes. Or maybe unique is the word.
It's fun, too ... as long as Davante keeps making the FTs. The first time he bricks a couple with 10 seconds to go in a one-point game while kids are chanting and clapping, it will be decidedly less fun. But maybe he never does that and it's just one of the things that makes the MU experience great.
The guys who do that chant are the bro-est bros in town, bro.
It's not the general student section, but a special section of bros in the upper tank.

It was part of a Jumbotron feature early in the season. The players were asked their favorite thing about the student section and Gardner said it was when they chanted auto-mat-ic when he was at the line.

If he was being sarcastic when he said it, that's incredibly unfortunate. Too bad teal doesn't translate to the Jumbotron.
Maybe he really does like it, like it's a mantra. He always seems to point up to that section when he makes the shot.
I got my old guy fan common sense panties in a bunch too the first time I heard it. The big man says he likes it let him get what he wants.
If Gardner starts burying them like Novak, Diener, or Matthews, then automatic makes sense. Anything sub 90% is not automatic at all.

85% for a big man is pretty much automatic. Not too many centers at any level free throwing like that....

I guess that's what happens when I can only now make 1/3 of the home games and haven't seen that happen yet this year. My bad.
And if they are bros and a bro-ing down in the student section, well...sweet bro.

The kids who made it had to get permission from Devante to use the picture of him and he was more than happy to allow it. They also gave him a few of the shirts because he really liked the idea.
For those who don't like the chant, that sucks because its not going a way

Exactly. He points after each make, and then I saw him walk over and point up and acknowledge the section after the game. Dude likes it. I used to think it was dumb, but it makes me smirk now. Are people forgetting when Damon Key wanted everyone to jingle their keys when he was at the line?
All I know is that the Big Fella was freakin' 10 for 10 last night. That's a HUGE part of the offense as he is so very difficult to stop. Look, we can look UGLY shooting our 3s, but when DG is 'dancing' in the paint and then hitting the inevitable free throws, it's ballet.
If DG says he wants it and helps him to focus, then the 'Best 6th Man in the Country' is absolutely doing their job.

He was shooting 75% coming into this season, and they did start it last year. That's my only objection.

You mean they had him pay for a few of the shirts right... Probably just a typo on your part.
Thank you!! I completely agree that the chant is stupid. Why would anyone want people chanting when their shooting free throws?

Davante doesn't strike me as the sarcastic type...especially for an official Jumbotron quote. That would be like Otule saying that he likes it when people tell him to keep his eye on the ball......

Thanks for that, and making me spit my coffee out all over my keyboard. Ha!
I used to hate it, too. Thought we were heckling our own player. But apparently he not only likes it, he encourages it...so give the man what he wants as long as he's putting that ball in the hoop. I love Ox!

Either it gives him confidence, calms the nerves, or gives him a "rhythm" to shoot to. Either way he likes it so they can keep it up.
If Davante likes it, I like it.

He didn't. He actually wanted them to stop - which is why it lasted about two games. It was distracting....and stupid.

+2
It's not going away, and he's got to be the best free throw shooting big in the country. Deal with it.

Meh... some fans are clairvoyant, the rest of us aren't. So be it.
