Just occurred to me that no one is discussing Holy Cross as an option. Gives the league Boston and with Bill Simmons/ESPNs help could be a player.
Here's the Simmons article from a few years ago:

Holy Cross doesn't want to be big time that's why they went to the Patroit League.

Yep. All about basketball commitment. If they want to join, show us that then point out your geography and we can take a look in 2016.
You forgot the teal.
Because they are terrible and don't care about basketball.

And they stole our fight song.
Too small (less than 3000 students), and Worcester is not Boston.
Man, if the idea is to just find 10-12 basketball schools, that's not too hard. If you wanna try to be elite, with all the fixin's that come with it, well, then I'm glad LW is leadin' this crusade and not fellow bonehead Scoopers.

The way my Dad told it, Notre Dame stole Holy Cross' fight song.
Well, for starters, there's the issue with them being Holy Cross.
What about Stetson? How come nobody brings up that vital link to the Florida market?

LOL. Would Stetson agree to renaming itself Southeast Cupcake University?

Nope, it's ours. Listen for yourself -- different arrangement, but same song.

Would've been nice if Holy Cross had stayed committed to basketball or joined the Big East when it began w/ Providence. They actually run a pretty solid athletic dept with 25 varsity sports though.
Same goes for BU. Would be nice to have a school in that market, would solidify the East Coast contingent. But it's not meant to be.
There are plenty of rea$ons why Holy Cross i$n't included with the re$t of the $chools that are being con$idered.
Diener's performance against Holy Cross in the 2003 first round game is still one of my all-time favorites. That's about all I can say for Holy Cross. That and Chris Matthews went there in case that makes a difference.
By the way, some people need to put a little more thought into what "brings you a market". Just because you get a school from a certain metropolitan area into your conference, that does not mean that everyone in that city suddenly becomes a fan of your conference.

We came very close to losing that game. I wonder where we would be today, if we had lost that game?

Patriot League is changing to full scholarships next year I believe.

We'd be SLU.

By bring you a market it means television sets with access to your conference's games...not necessarily fans of a conference, so yes having a team in a market does bring you that market.

We'd be a bunch of whiners trumpeting how solid and close-knit our middling conference is while secretly hoping that the new Big East lobs us an invite.
In other words, we'd be UDPride.
Well done, Sultan. Well done.

No different than DePaul.

No different than DePaul.
DePaul spent $6.5 million on its basketball program in 2010, seventh most in the Big East. More than Pitt, Villanova, Cincinnati, St. John's and West Virginia, and not far behind UConn. They're paying their coach $1.8 million a year.
They care. They've just made a lot of bad decisions to put them where they are today.
Why don't we try for the University of Phoenix, or Rassmussen College?
They have a lot of commercials, and probably can add to our conference...
Teal isn't necessary i hope.

Not for most. But there's usually at least one horse that can't find his way back to the stable, so it's nice that you left the door open.

First of all, Holy Cross is roughly an hour from Boston. So is Providence. There are 52 colleges in Boston and almost none of them would result in us getting a better TV deal even within Boston. Most games are televised nationally or regionally and the best way to get exposure is to play good teams with fans who will watch. Playing Gonzaga probably gets us more attention in Boston than Holy Cross.
Since ND is out, we really should focus on getting St. Mary's. We'd still be relevant in South Bend then once ND comes around.
Once Alverno adds men to their underclass enrollment then it could join the league.
Holy Cross? As what, the name for the new conference?
Call me crazy, but the University of Chicago used to be in the Big Ten.
DePaul can cater to the northsiders and Chicago would be good for the southsiders.
It only makes sense for full-market penetration.

University of Phoenix would be okay, except the athletic department would never be sure where to fly to for away games.

+1
You're right, maybe DeVry, or Kaplan is a better choice. I'm not sure if they stack up academically compared to the University of Phoenix though?
Ok, in all seriousness. Why in the world would we want Holy Cross? That's like suggesting we should get Houston, Seatle, Denver, just because of their markets.

I know what jsglow is getting for Christmas!
A night cap that is a replica of a Green Bay Packer helmet.
Didn't mean to I mean to imply I thought they are a better option than Creighton, SLU, etc.
To be honest I was only thinking of the Boston angle. Didn't realize Worcester was that far from Boston. Also thought their program was better than it is. Guess I relate it to Bob Cousy and 2003 tourney.
