Anyone going to any of the reunion weekend events?
I am not real motivated to go for some reason.
HA! It's officially my 10th year and just like Senior WEAK, I'll be skipping it.
Funny thing is I'll be in town AFTER reunion weekend! ;D
It's my 35th but my wife and I decided to go to Irish Fest instead. So we'll be in MKE the third weekend of August.
Why in god's name would you skip senior week?
MU reunions are weak. The %age who attend is just dismal, I think the highest figure for my year was about 300-400.
Then it goes down to math .. Say there were 1500 in your class .. while you were at MU, you might have actually known 100 people. Maybe you were super popular and knew 200. But probably not. And you really only were friends with maybe 30 people, but let's say 50 and the rest were acquaintances .. So that's 30/1500 = 2%. Or take the 200 number. That's 12% if you're super popular.
Then only 300 of those 1500 show up. So max, if you were super popular, there'll be 30 people there you know. More likely, it'll be about 10.
Of course, some groups show up better than others .. but for most, that's how it goes.
mu_hilltopper - our mutual acquaintance and I just made plans to crash tonight's event (since we didn't preregister).
After reading your post, it seems like I have just as much chance of seeing someone from my class at the grocery store than at the reunion. Oh, well, with HP, at least we are bound to hit Real Chili, so that should make it worth the trip.
My suggestion: The picnic is the most highly attended. All the people with children can show up without a babysitter.
No reservation required, it's free, and you can come and go at any moment.

Class of '85 reunions aren't weak. Our reunion was truly outstanding a couple of years back. If you rely on the university to organize everything, you are likely to be disappointed. You need to cooperate with the alumni office but get a couple of alums to chip in some dough and a couple more to help organize some events and you'll get a good reunion. You've got to start planning, perhaps a year ahead of time. Before you know it you get a >50% turnout like we did for our 20th. We even had a lobster bake at a prestigious alums' home at the lake. Father Wild was out pressing the flesh and I am told the school raised >$1m from the event. IMO that is the way it should be.
They are what you make them. At 1:00 last night I got a phone call from about 6 members of my class - 1982 - and they were having a blast. Unfortunately I couldn't make it, but the key is communicating with your fellow alums prior to, and ensuring that at least you and your friends make it fun. The class of 82 had a gathering at the Ambassador Hotel last night and that's where the late night call came from. I was at the 20th for my class and had a ball. I don't plan on missing too many of them.

so true. I went back for my 5, 10 and 15 and had GREAT times at each reunion......I'm fortunate enough to have a core group of 91 grads that also make reunion a priority - - - great times.

.. on the topic of communicating .. funny, last year I badgered a close friend of mine a couple months before the reunion. I told him how ~9 of his close MU friends were going to be at the picnic, that the picnic you just show up, it's casual, bring your kids, yadda yadda.
A few days before, I sent him an email (and cc'd to our friends) that if he didn't show up, we were going to drive to his house, pants him in front of his family, and kidnap him to the picnic. I said he was coming to the picnic no matter what, kicking and screaming if need be. Even included a funny satellite picture of his house with a bullseye around it.
So the picnic comes, and he's not there. I call him on the cell and give him a rough time. What are you doing? "Nuthin." Why aren't you here? "um, uhhhhh." No reason.
And that from a guy who lives close, wife and kids, and a very decent job.
It's year 7 for me...I LIVE in Milwaukee and I didn't go to my 5 year, nor will I be present for year 10. The people I was closest to I still keep in touch with. There's really nobody I'd be that anxious to see.

Class of '97 Reunion was a big success. From what I understand, Marquette class reunions are actually very well attended compared to other universities. What I like most about the reunions is seeing people that I DON'T see all the time. I've now been to two reunions and I plan on going every 5 years. It's a lot of fun. I don't know why you wouldn't go.
Agreed that the class of '97 was a huge success. I couldn't believe how many people were there. It was a great time, especially the Lodge friday night.

I just got an email from Marquette Annual Giving Officer. Turns out that the Class of '97 had the most attendees of all of the classes AND set a record for raising the most in fundraising than any other 10 year reunion class EVER! There's something to be said about being the last Warriors!
The ten reunion classes raised a total of $1.1 Million for Marquette Today. This is also a record. All together, this reunion weekend set Marquette records for attendance, fundraising and participation. Great job, Marquette.

This is awesome...congrats to the class of 1997! I think my class (2002) made most of it's donations at the bar(s) over the weekend.
Say what you want about Fr. Wild and some of the administration, but for they have really done a good job running MU. MU is hitting new highs every year (attendance, applications, donations, reunion attendance, national exposure, etc.)
For a school that's been around since 1881, it's pretty cool that we are all around to see new highs that MU is reaching.
Wow! That's good news! I also think the alumni office got it right: I'm sure I wasn't the only one in my reunion class who received a call asking for a donation for the alumni challenge.
The "Gold" debacle withstanding, Wild's done a great job. The hoops team and the renewed interest in the school helps a lot too.
I'm a ten year guy and I was told the '97 class had the most people ever there (between 400-500). It was a good time at the Lodge. Better than the picnic, where all classes are there at the same time and it's a cluster-f trying to find people you know. Don't know if I'll be at any more.
The tour of the Al Mc center was cool, though. Insane facility. And Jack Harbaugh was one of the nicest guys in the world. Told our group to call him if anyone ever wanted to come down to campus to discuss the team, MU, hoops, or anything in general. Gave one guy his business card and seemed very genuine.

Obviously Dwyane launched the program, but Wild and the administration hired Crean (a great hire), negotiated the move to the bradley center, got the AL built, etc. etc.
The whole Gold thing was obviously a large mistake... no doubt about it. I think several people mis-calculated that move as well as the surveys and voting after that.
I think the University would have been better served to just go back to the name "hiltoppers" (no voting... just proclaim it as the original name and go back to it) and be done with the whole debate... but I'm just one guy... and realistically... it's just a nickname.
Marquette University is the "brand" and the product... "golden eagles" is just a name on a jersey.

Marquette played in the Bradley Center long before either Wild or Crean stepped on campus. That said, the whole "gameday experience" at the BC has been Crean's creation.
yea, sorry... I don't mean to turn this into another nickname debate.
I know everybody has a different point of view on the subject, and that's ok.
I'm just trying to point out all of the good stuff that has happened at MU over the past 10 years. I think its great that I'm around to enjoy it. I can name off 10 things the school has done right over the past 3 years, and only 1 (albeit glaring) thing wrong.
At the end of the day, the school is in better shape now than ever... no matter what nickname you like better.
To be honest, while I was in school I was never that big of a fan of fr. wild or of the administration... but as I'm looking at the whole body of work... it's pretty impressive.

I think the 1995 NIT Quarter Final vs USF was the first game at the MECCA since the move in 1988.
A few more reg season games were scheduled then including Santa Clara featuring Steve Nash.

No prob... my point I guess is that even in the late 90's some people (including myself) wanted MU to move back to the arena. The current administration decided to stay at the Bradley and eliminate all games at the MECCA and I would say that move is paying off.

And it was that game with Santa Clara where then Marquette coach Mike Deane sarcastically stated that if Steve Nash was a 1st round NBA player then Deane should submit his own name for the NBA draft. What a jerk. Nash was just a college kid at that point and it's great that Deane was certainly made to look the fool for that comment.

Yeah, but we WON that game! I was there and the intimacy of the Arena was A-MAZING! (Way better than my student ticket seats, too.)
It's just too bad we lost the following year @ SCU due to the hot hand of Brian Jones, who would later - the preseason of the following season - break his hand because Adonal Foyle (I think) stepped on it during summer rec league games. He never was the same player! D'oh!

I'm sure Nash looks at his two NBA MVP trophies and his millions of dollars and says to himself, "I told you I was a player! Damn you Mike Deane!!!!" ;D

Maybe we have Mike Deane to thank for the Nash's insaneness on the court. Maybe Deane saying that was exactly what Nash needed to step up his game and become the superstar he is today...
