Good. I feel better now that it is done.
Seems clear this is a withdrawal as opposed to a coup to stake claim to the Big East brand and history.
Usually not one to rely on withdrawal, but under the circumstances, I'm good with it this time.

Pulling out is risky, but when it works there is nothing better.
Well it looks like we'll get to beat the crap out of Tulane, Smu, UCF, Houston, etc before we go, if we're not leaving until June 2015
Too soon to say when we are leaving for sure. Lots of decisions, negotiations and maybe lawsuits to come, but it is reassuring to have official announcements from the C7 and the BEast.

ESPN. A BE spokesperson says June 30, 2015. I'd be shocked if they wait that long. C7 news conference at 4:30 EST, hosted by St. John's.

During the halftime show for the Butler-IU game, Doug Gottlieb, professional whiner and notorious MU hater, had nothing good to say about the split, saying that it was the only option for the schools. He went on to say that Georgetown MAY be able to survive the move much like Memphis has survived in Conference USA, but that the other schools should be worried. He acts like this new conference is going to be garbage when in reality, it's going to always be better than a couple of the so-called super conferences every year assuming we get Butler, Xavier, Creighton, Gonzaga (I hope), etc. He just totally discounted the idea of a national basketball conference and wrote it off as a desperation move without providing any reasonable support for his argument. Anyway, can't stand the guy, and this little opinion further reinforced my disdain for him.
I saw that and I agree he had no basis... But, no one wanted to respond to my posts about the CNN article which was the first to state that we did NOT have the votes needed to dissolve the conference. This gave us much less negotiating power and could be very interesting in terms of exit fee lawsuits.

I'm interested to hear what, if any, of the big questions get answered in the news conference this afternoon. Could be too early to say what's happening with the name, records, etc.

Lots of work to do. Need to form a league, hire staff and get other members.
Well, Gottlieb is the same guy who got kicked out of Notre Dame for stealing his roommates' credit cards and charging up a storm around South Bend. Of course, he landed at Oklahoma State to play for another crook - Eddie Sutton. Not quite sure how he ever got an ESPN gig.

Yes, I'll hold the rest of my judgements until the presser. Now someone is telling me that because 7 are leaving together there would be no exit fees... ???

I've heard the same on the exit fees. I'd be surprised we actually leave as late as 2015.

I believe, either by being able to vote them away or by BE rules regarding number of teams leaving there's a way around exit fees. Otherwise they'll just file a suit to force a settlement that ends up being a fraction of the fees. More interested in our ability to reduce the timeframe - hopefully the 7 can ally with Rutgers, Louisville, and ND in figuring that one out. Since there's probably not any hard feelings and interest in future scheduling I'm sure MU is still on good terms with UL and ND. Not sure we ever had much in common with RU, though they might be able to stick in a conference with the five C7 lacrosse programs.

The more in think about it, the more I refuse to believe Georgetown, Providence, Villanova, St Johns and Seton Hall are just going to give up the Big East name. Just buy it.
Best case scenario is keeping BE name, MSG, and add Dayton, Xavier, SLU and Butler. Break the league into two divisions. Then get a new TV deal going.

I really, really hope Dayton and SLU are not options 3 and 4.
So how do we see the press conference?
I see it as a good thing. Solidarity and a vision=great start to a new beginning.

Of the teams still in the conference Georgetown, Providence and St. John's were original organizers and UConn was an original invitee. Hope we can use the "founding father" status of those schools to keep the name, etc.
How about the C7 shopping themselves to the ACC to go with ND (non-football member) to create an 8 school non-football division of the conference?

How about we finally come to the realization that this is never going to happen.

I wouldn't bank on it. When the old WAC split from 16 to two conferences of 8 (WAC and Mountain West), 7 of the Mountain West Conference's founding 8 members were also "pre-expansion" (aka, 1980 or earlier) members of the WAC. In that case, the "founding fathers" didn't get to keep the WAC name.

And after about three years, it wasn't that big of a deal. Losing the BE name wouldn't be that big of a deal either. I would rather buy out a season or two early.

Agree. And though the history is there, the brand is currently being dragged through the mud. The brand has value, but I really think the asking price will be more than that value.
Longshot, but does anyone know if we could watch a stream of the press conference anywhere? firstrowsports.eu?
