I know, I know, just what we need another thread about confrence uncertainty.
I didn't know where else to put this so here it is. There's rumors/reports saying that Georgetown is having back talks with the ACC trying to make one last push to get in, which is causing the hold up of the C7 leaving. I know some of you guys were saying it's because we're waiting to make a formal announcement and get an idea if Butler, X, etc are on board with us, but this definitely gets me nervous.
Anybody else have any inside to this? I know the link isn't exactly USA Today, but figured i'd ask ya'll.

Even if Georgetown did manage to get into the ACC wouldn't that be idiotic? It's only a matter of time before Clemson, Florida State, etc are poached right. Help.

This won't save the Big East from dissolution. The basketball schools have to leave. This will be their only chance to leave without leaving big money (NCAA tourney share, and probably past exit fees) behind. Once a new football school gets the vote they are stuck unless they want to leave the cash (and other valuable league assets like the name) on the table.
I don't see how Georgetown adds much to the ACC. If the ACC is about to lose football schools, they'll want to shore up with Cincinnati or even UConn before Georgetown. Georgetown does not come anywhere close to adding value to the ACC the way that ND does.
fine - move on without Georgetown....
This sounds like a rumor that would come from Temple's or UConn's camp.
It's either the last act of a desperate man or the first act of Henry VIII.
EDIT: from pg 4 of thread:
Thamel reported this earlier. Ive heard the same. They have told Aresco earlier that they are united with the other 6, but want to hold off on an announcement until due diligence has been done. There is no rush at the moment, so must review all angles of how/when to leave, who is on board to join them, etc. All in all, they arent holding up the defection, but rather the announcement until the 7 have time to figure out their best course of action.

That sounds like a feature, not a bug. Especially if UConn and Cincy replace them.
Basically you would have the best of the Big East subbing MU, GU and Villanova for UNC and Duke--and losing DePaul, USF, Rutgers, Seton Hall, Providence completely.
If they were trying to get into the ACC, they would leave /dissolve the BE first with the others, not wait to do it.
This is the Gonzaga model LW was referring to. Without them and SJU, we dominate. GU won't join us.
I'm in DC right now, and listening to sports talk on the Beltway, heard none of this talk. There were multiple segments devoted to the topic, and the only suggestion that came up (of one of the hosts) was to merge the east coast BE teams with the ACC, but that was simply hosts throwing out random ideas.

+1 And then who is Cromwell? Larry
the journal sentinel article states georgetown is holding up the vote/announcement, but just says the president "is having a hard time leaving the BEAS"...i can't believe that can be the truth at this point in time...even with georgetown's long history with the BEAST. the vote/official announcement can't come soon enough.

Remember that some of these administrators are good friends. Change creates conflict. The GU AD may be torn by this. Extra time contemplating this may make it look like he isn't quick to leave his buddies out to dry. It's definitely a decision that could make or break a school athletically. Give it time and he'll hopefully come around.
From the JS "Meanwhile, there will be many details to sort out before the new league can begin play. As one source noted, no one among the seven breakaway schools has experience in beginning a new league. But that challenge paled in comparison to Marquette's wish to no longer be a part of what the Big East had become."
Haven't all these teams experienced beginning a new league, 5 from the Big East and MU and DePaul from the GMC?
Maybe none of the current ADs or Administrators?
GU's athletic department is larger than any of the other 6 schools. Plus, they dont like the idea of being pigeon-holed in a Catholic conference because that school's reach extends far beyond Catholicism. They want to be a big boy despite not playing football.
IMO, if the ACC was smart, they would add GU and SJU and get small percentages of the DMV and NYC markets. ESPN is rumored to be in discussions with the ACC in terms of starting an ACC network. The ACC is also contemplating changing their pay-out structure for the first time in its history; it would continue to be equal media rights pay-outs but unequal pay-outs related to bowl games and ncaa credits (rewards-based compensation). Bowl money trumps ncaa credits so this development is an attempt to keep FSU and Clemson happy.
I have a bad feeling this is not going to go as perfect as we all hope it will.

I have a bad feeling about retaining MSG.
Delaney was interested in getting the B1G access to the Pinstripe Bowl. They will probably happen now.
Maybe Delaney strikes a deal with MSG to play there once every....four years.
The ACC strikes a deal to play there every four years.
Maybe we get the rest.
I have been to every BET except the first one (since we joined). UConn and SU dominate and its not even close. After that, Pitt, ND and GU. After those, WVU, SJU, Nova. Then the rest.
We dont draw well at MSG because its a huge commitment. Days off of work...hotels...airfare....restaurants. MSG fills up with fans that live in close proximity. Unfortunately, SJU doesnt even really show up. Nova only shows up when they are good. Prov and SHU are minor league.
If we start a new conference and add the likes of Creighton, Gonzaga, SLU, Dayton, X, etc....those fans arent going to travel to MSG. And on top of it, the competition isnt half what it was. I think the new tourney should rotate. Remember the Jimmy V Classic games last year? That was bad. Dicky V got on the mic and actually complained about the turnout.

I think SJU, GU and others have already reached out to the ACC and were told no. And frankly, even if they did go to the ACC, this is *still* the best option for Marquette at this point.
People need to stop worrying so much.

I think this is right. As much as I love the BET at MSG, the big, bruising big east we've all come to know and love no longer exists. Just reality. MSG probably isn't going to want it. Market yourselves as what you are. Make your tournament consistent with the make up of your league. This league is going to be a bit of a niche conference, leveraging a basketball legacy, so embrace that and run with it. Though low in capacity, would you rather watch a tournamnet played at a filled up Hinkle Field House, the palestra, or even UD arena, or in front of 10,000 empty seats at MSG, canseco field house, Verizon center, etc? Which would you rather attend? When reality no longer matches tradition, its time for a new tradition.
