Title: How Was Tulane Added?
Post by: GOO on December 13, 2012, 12:32:40 PM
We know the non-football playing schools hold the majority and some super majority votes... so how was Tulane added?  Was there a vote on Tulane or was the commish authorized to add schools previously?
Was there pressure from the football teams or what....?

It doesn't make sense to me.

Negative:
Their last winning FB season was 2002.
Basketball has a 212 RPI.

Positive side:
They did play in the 1909 Bacardi Bowl...  Under head coach Buster Brown.
They play at the Superdome.  Great Championship Venue perhaps...

But how where they added?  If the basketball schools didn't like the addition and didn't vote for them, how did Tulane become a member?

I've been wondering the same thing. I know that there were plans to expand to 20 schools, but I'm wondering if Aresco had the authority to add whomever he pleased?

Could it be possible that the basketball schools didnt have a vote in football issues just like Temple doesnt have a vote in basketball?

No, because Tulane was added as a full member - all sports.
But, it appears that the basketball schools didn't vote them in...
Or, maybe under pressure they voted them in and then thought, what a mistake... not sure... I'd like to know.

I've been wondering as well.  And it was seriously weak to vote on it when they knew Louisville, UConn, or Cincy was leaving in a matter of hours and would get to vote on it first.

My theory: the basketball schools voted in Tulane as a sort of suicide pull for the conference, so that we would have the leverage to leave.

This seems most likely to me. I can't see any way the basketball schools all vote to approve Tulane and then make it out as though they never wanted Tulane and were blind-sided by it. Were that the case, someone would have broken that story by now.

Another possibility:

New members are added by vote of the Directors (school presidents). So the presidents voted while the AD's were out to lunch and once it was finalized, the AD's said WTF.
