Title: Something coming soon?
Post by: Pakuni on December 12, 2012, 11:19:22 PM
ESPN's Brett Murphy, who's been among the better reporters out there on realignment, recently tweeted that the C7 schools will be making an announcement regarding their future in the next 24-48 hours.Says ESPN will have a story up soon.

QuoteUConn president Susan Herbst has contacted officials from the non-FBS Big East members, pleading with them to stay in the league, sources told ESPN.

Poor UConn  :(

The UCONN presidential appeal to the C7 is somewhat humorous.  I don't blame her, but she's got balls to do that considering all of their efforts on UCONN's part to leave the conference.  She would have to make an awfully compelling case with some big dollars behind it to the C7 for them to consider staying.

I feel bad for Aresco on all this.  Wow, did he walk into a nightmare.

C7 to UConn and Cincy:

"That's right, we're breaking up with you. Shocked? Never expected it, did you?"

I still think it's better to let UConn and Cincy stay if they want to park their football elsewhere. I'd much rather see their basketball and Olympic sports here than relegated to C-USA or whatever that amalgamation of the Big East football remnants and invitees would be.

Besides, we need at least one of UConn, Cincy, or USF to stick around for us to keep the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

I'd invite UCONN, Cinci, and Memphis if they want to park their football elsewhere.  I'd invite Creighton and Xavier as well.  Try to get a 10 team league with an 18 game home-and-home schedule.

Keeping the automatic bid doesn't matter much to me.  If we aren't in the top 45 teams, does it really matter if we get a bid or not?

I would think the 7 would be fine with it, as long as they still agree to throw us an exit fee when the ACC gives into their begging.

I don't see much long-term benefit in bringing aboard members who would spend every minute of their membership trying to get out with a better deal. That's just an invitation to the kind of instability that brought us to this point in the first place.
Better off bringing in only programs who at least have some semblance of commitment to the conference.
UConn and Cincy would bring some value, I just don't see it outweighing the instability that comes with them.

This.  Plus we all know Cincy and UConn will eventually make it into one of the 5 BCS Conferences.  If these suckers go to 16 teams then they'll get a call from somewhere.

Explain to me why I should care as an MU fan what happens to UConn? :)

The only thing that could (but not necessarily does) matter if UConn stuck around would be its effect on retaining an NCAA Tourney autobid. (Keeping 8 teams together, but I've heard so many conflicting stories on this it's hard to know what the real rules are anyway).

Sounds neat, but I'm sure we won't be requiring the autobid for quite a while.  ;)

With regard to the auto bid, since the very existence of the NCAA is threatened by the BCS, wouldn't it go out of its way to ensure that a group of schools that break away from the BCS umbrella retain their auto bid?

We've only gotten an autobid once in 1997, so you could say that we've never required it.  The conference as a whole is going to want to keep it though.

Current NCAA rules say a conference must have 7 partipants to retain autobid and can even drop to 6 temporarily, no?  I believe the rule was changed this year to accommodate the WAC or MWC.

I'm guessing we're waiting for negotiations to complete with other schools that we want to join us in a conference during this 24-48 hour period.

Exciting.  Hope we retain the BE name.

Does anyone know if the 7 can just kick out the other schools and negate the contracts for the other teams to join?

Well, if the ACC manages to have its current expected membership become a reality there's no doubt it will be the best basketball conference in the country.  No problem going for #2 though.

If I've read and understood correctly, they vote to dissolve the conference.  That means there is no conference for the invitees to join anymore and the football schools aren't "kicked out", they just don't have a conference anymore because it no longer exists.  As part of the dissolution, they vote on how to distribute assets (including the brand name) - probably where football schools not getting an acceptable payoff may put in some legal grievance.  As owners of the assets including name, the C7 schools will form their own conference, which they own the rights to name "Big East Conference".  Those with better knowledge, help me understand where I may be incorrect.

I am not sure what planet some of you are on. The C7 conference with proposed additions would be maybe the 5th or 6th best conference behind acc, big 10, big 12, pac 12, sec. Maybe in time it can be built into a better conference but it would not be right away.  Like I said  if the remaining big east schools wanted to start a basketball conference it would be at least as good and probably better with Uconn, Cincy, Memphis, USf , Houston and Temple to start with

I agree with the rest, but the Pac-12 sucks. If we get Gonzaga, Butler, and Xavier, we are definitely better than the Pac-12. I'd say probably on par or better than the Big 12 too. Maybe no top team that matches KU, but just as much depth and a good chance at more regular bids.

Agreed that we are behind the ACC, B1G, and SEC, but we're right in the mix after that.

I would be excited about Gonzaga, xavier and Butler. As Sultan said in one of these many threads, focus on schools with long term commitment. I think the new conference could be a perennial top 2 or 3 conference, it just won't be at first. The important thing is to have stability, not being dependant on the football schools and being able to improve going forward.

Who knows what the membership of the new Big East will be?  I said "go for #2" not "will be #2".  Ok, so maybe the Big 10 will beat us out (they will still be vastly overrated like they always are); then you go for #3.  None of the other conferences you listed are unbeatable.

Big 12?
There's Kansas and .....?
Texas is way down (though obviously lots of room for improvement).
Who knows what's next for Baylor.
Can't see Bruce Weber doing any better than Frank Martin at K-State.
Mizzou and A&M are gone.
Colorado's never been consistently good.
TCU stinks.
Oklahoma and Okie State are middling programs right now.

And, as has been noted, Pac 12 has been terrible in recent years.

You are taking one snapshot in time. Texas, Kansas, OU, OSU, West Virginia and even Baylor are all solid and established programs with large recruiting bases and wealthy alumni that have been and will be again in the top 10 to 25 at some point.  I will give you, right now, not much difference. OSU and Kansas in top 25 compared to Georgetown and possibly Creighton and Gonzaga if they enter.
