In addition, McNamara has an entire article about all this stuff but you need to a Providence subscriber to get access to it.
Wow - more foot in the mouth idiocy from Larry. The guy's ego is out of control...headline to story:
Marquette AD opens up on Big East future, disses A-10
You don't diss anyone...his comments on the A-10 and MU reeked of arrogance. Would be comical if the other Big East Catholic schools take up the A-10 and join, and the A-10 says you know what - F*ck you Marquette....
I thought with title of post LW was looking to work at Providence.
These quotes came from the interview LW did with homer.
The entire interview can be found here:

So what is Larry supposed to do, go out and complement LaSalle, George Washington, Rhode Island and Fordham as the basketball equals of Villanova, Georgetown, Providence and St. Johns? Tell the world that we're really looking forward to finding a way to play all of them every year?
Nothing he said is either inaccurate nor terribly insulting. Nor would anybody in their right mind disagree.
Frankly, I'm delighed with what he said. I would MUCH rather play in a smaller conferene with home-and-home games annually with Georgtown, Villanova, St. Johns, Providence, etc. than one game with Georgetown and one game with George Washington, one game with LaSalle and one game with Villanova, one game with URI, one game with Providence.
"When you think about the A-10, I don't even really view the remnants of the Big East in the same light as I do the A-10. There's no Georgetown in the A-10. Georgetown has won a national championship. There's no Marquette in the A-10. They've not won a national championship in their histoy. They have a couple of good schools and they have some nice quality across the board, but I certainly, and I know I'm being sort of a homer here, but I certainly think the Big East basketball schools present a profile that is superior to what the depth of the A-10 is."

We have people on this board left and right saying how playing in the A-10 is beneath us. Our AD, diplomatically says we are better than the A-10 and he is exactly correct, and one or two people have their noses disjointed. What the heck is he supposed to say? He is laying out the options and using a bit of candor to send a few signals out there....we're not joining a league with St. Bonny and Fordham. It isn't happening. Nor should we.
Seems Kevin McNamara agrees with LW's take, and McNamara has been on the Big East beat writer for a long time. If news breaks on the Big East and you want to details on it, not just the ESPN sugar coating, McNamara is going to be the guy that will deliver it.

I think it's safe to say that the people with their noses disjointed would be raging just as much or more if LW suggested MU is a good fit with the A-10.
"See ... told you they wanted to make Marquette just like St. Louis!"
"Oh, great, LW views Marquette as a mid-major on par with St. Bonaventure and Fordham!"
Larry very correctly noted that while there are some quality A-10 programs, as a whole the conference is not at the level of the C7.

Was just going to post a similar thought in Ners' pants-shitting thread.

Man, I didn't notice the irony of that. Good catch.
Pakuni
Have said before that becoming St. Louis is not a decision you make. It can happen by the decisions you make and before you know it you are St. Louis. Everyone always raves about Gonzaga and Butler and they are one coaching change away from being St. Louis. Until MU proves they have Buzz for next five years our conference is a big deal.
THE AUDACITY OF THIS MAN, TO APPEAR IN PRINT, RADIO, AND TELEVISED MEDIA, AND SAY WORDS ORGANIZED INTO COMPLETE SENTENCES TO OTHER PEOPLE!
I'M SO ANGRY!!
If our AD dislikes the A10 enough to comment on it publicly I am VERY happy.
Marquette in the A10 = That'sa no good!
This is exactly the stance the C7 needs to take. I don't know where the story came out yesterday about the A-10 wanting to invite the remaining Big East teams but it was ludicrous to think it would happen.
LW's comments are exactly what needed to be stated..and publicly by any of the C7. We will poach the A-10 not jump at the opportunity to join it. What is there to join?? In a down year in that conference we would compete for the A-10 championship.
While LW is certainly right, I'm not sure we want to say anything bad about anyone until we see how this all shakes out...
This is the same guy that called out Buzz last year for potentially "irrecovably" offending someone in the future. Keep that in mind when he says things like this.
Stupid thread - what did he say that dissed anyone? Is any of this controversial?
The A-10 has "football of a second or third tier".... anyone disagree?
"There's no Georgetown in the A-10.".... anyone disagree?
"Big East basketball schools present a profile that is superior to what the depth of the A-10 is" ... anyone disagree?
Pfft. We need LW to be a leader in this. About the worst thing that could happen for Marquette would be to fall either into a Horizon league scenario where we need the autobid and a monster non-con every year or going into an A-10 where you are forced to play 5-6 teams that you wouldn't even want to schedule as buy games if you didn't absolutely have to.
Maybe everyone else has the warm fuzzies that the C7 are united, but personally, I want to know as certainly as possible that we'll end up joined at the hip to Georgetown, St. John's, and Villanova. While we're all basketball-first schools, Marquette is still the geographic outlier and the latecomer to the Big East party.
So how do we solidify our place with them? By getting out front and taking the lead on where this ship is going to be sailing. LW is doing that and getting attention for it from Spokane to Providence. He may have made missteps in the past, but this damn sure isn't one of them. This is a bold statement that Marquette is going to be at the forefront of this future Big East. I'm really glad that he's getting this one right, as navigating us through the conference turmoil is the most important task he's had since he took over as AD, and is even bigger than making sure Buzz Williams sticks around (though that conversation has also died down quite a bit).

Well stated.
I took the title of this thread as LW was gettin' on some honies in Providence.
LW is on a bit of a positive roll for me. Thought his email to the students/fans struck the right chord and I like him going public with a "no matter how this shakes out Marquette will continue to be a significant player in college basketball" attitude. He could have been more diplomatic rearding the A10, though I agree that joining would be a setback. Only real disagreement was with him floating the "big dog (?) small pond" possibility. Trying to be the Gonzaga of the Horizon League would be worse than joining the A10 IMHO.

I agree with what he is saying and I would be much more annoyed if he was saying that the A-10 is a great conference that we would love to be a part of. However, he is somewhat overplaying our position and he could have been a bit more diplomatic. We are the ones trying to determine our future because we are in a crumbling conference and have no football program to offer. That is not the case for the A-10.

They'll be crumbling as soon as the ink dries on the invitations we're sending out to their best programs. And they still won't have football.

The only thing that I'll add is that I don't think he was "floating" any ideas out there strategically. His interview with Homer is pretty conversational, and they discuss a lot of aspects of the conference realignment. If Larry was strategically floating ideas out there in that 15min., then he's a fantastic actor and a far better PR man than I ever gave him credit for.

Larry will need to get better at speaking more clearly if he's going to get quoted this often.

An honest assessment is not a "diss." None of the Catholic 7 schools are going to the A-10. The only reason that move is even discussed is because the A-10 wants it. It's no more likely than us joining the Missouri Valley Conference.
