Title: BE dissolving?
Post by: ATWizJr on November 22, 2012, 10:53:02 AM
Per the Providence Journal today, this looks like a real possibility engineered by the basketball schools.

Article on Yahoo today quoted figures on annual payouts.

BE schools  6 million
Big Ten schools  24 million

Never knew that. Huge difference

Here's the gist of the article.

"This week's move by Rutgers and Maryland to the Big Ten has cast some doubt over the Big East's expansion designs and also raised speculation that the seven Catholic, basketball-centric Big East schools could be nearing a "tipping point" due to the instability on the football side.

Representatives of some of those seven schools said this week that the tipping point would be reached if either Connecticut or Louisville heads to another league. Such a loss would be infinitely more important to the basketball schools than Rutgers leaving, because it would further erode an already badly damaged basketball core.

Losing a UConn or Louisville would also give the basketball schools the opportunity to engineer an unprecedented power play and vote to dissolve the league. According to the Big East's bylaws, the conference can be dissolved by a two-thirds vote of all members. The seven basketball schools, which include Providence College, would own that voting advantage over three all-sports members (Cincinnati, South Florida and either UConn or Louisville). That voting edge would disappear in July, when new members Central Florida, Houston, Memphis and SMU come onboard."

So basically, if you want a basketball-centric league, it's gotta happen in the next 6 months, because you may not get this chance again.

...but only if one of the football schools leaves before then.

I would think the remaining basketball schools remain until they are assured of splitting the exit fee monies the football schools are paying. That pot gets bigger as more schools defect.

As the article states, G'Town and St. John's want to stay aligned with the football schools. I don't see this vote happening.

Can we throw somebody out?  I'm only half kidding.  Time to hire the big time lawyers to figure the angles out.

It is great they want to stay aligned. I see no indication whatsoever the football conferences want BBall only schools.

They don't. No other power conference has a school without football (except Notre Dame & ACC...but they are playing 5 league games a year and they made the accomodation with the hope of gaining full football membership from them eventually). Otherwise, it's never happened. The one league that did is falling apart.

I think the article is referring to the Big East football schools, not other conferences. St John's and Georgetown might not vote to dissolve as long as there are football schools in the Big East, thinking that with any football schools in the conference there is more potential TV revenue.

If those football schools don't include Louisville or UConn, they're stupid (sorry Cincy, Memphis).

But, Cincy and Memphis are both good basketball programs. So they aren't sacrificing hoops for the sake of football. And staying aligned with those schools will still provide more $$$ for a TV deal since there is football involved....no matter how crappy the football product might be.

If it involves travelling to Boise, San Diego, Tampa, Orlando, Houston, Dallas, etc., the benefit starts to become negligible. How much, really, is that conference going to get? It already lost Rutgers. Now UConn and Louisville? Where is the money coming from? And if the Big East basketball schools aren't any of the football money, how much more do you think that conference is getting than a basketball only conference? $500,000? a million? With the drastic increase in travel costs, that additional revenue might be pretty small at the end of the day.

I would, however, LOVE to have Memphis, Temple, Cincinnati and UMass involved in a basketball-only league with us.

The ACC is as likely to collapse as the BEast at this point.   I predict something of a merger between the two.

I have a bet that ND never makes it to the ACC.  They bail before like TCU did with the BE.  The next conference ND plays in after the BE will be the B10.

Which might make perfect sense as to why Delaney is now raiding the ACC, to try to force ND's hand in coming to the B10.

ND has no need to join ANY conference.  Especially in football after this season.  Their strength has just gotten better.  They will not want to share any of their TV money, bowl money etc with any conference.  And they dont need to.  They have restored themselves as a national power without a conference.  I could see them getting together with Texas who also has a sweetheart football deal.  In that scenario maybe they join a league with Texas where both dont have to share any revenues with the rest.  And the other schools in that conference would gladly do it.

The big problem these 4 super conference 16 team leagues have is that if they try to claim they have some sort of national championship without Texas and ND, they dont.  Nobody will give it any validity.

Now lets go to hoops.  IF UNC leaves its partnership with Duke.  What happens to Duke in Basketball?  Would anyone give any sort of credability to a hoops championship with no Duke?  Georgetown?  Villanova etc?  I think not.

If UNC leaves the ACC for the B10 and ditches its rivalry with Duke (repeat if), it will collapse faster than the BE.

Exactly my point.  So where does that leave Duke?

Georgetown? Villanova? Notre Dame?  as far a hoops goes?

IF the talks are accurate, the big schools shutting the others our of "their" tournament.  I dont see any validity to it.  And if UNC goes to the BIG, that only leaves one spot.  I HIGHLY doubt ND is going to join the BIG.  Unless the BIG allows ND to keep its revenues by itself.  IE what Texas has in the 12.
