I hope it's not due to injury, but due to outstanding practices by Juan.
Jeeeeez, another start to the season with an injury (concussion)?
Lockett will be wearing a facemask I hear, broken face?
EDIT: Nope.
MU just scored 8 points in 59 seconds. What was our problem in offense again?
Taylor in for Otule, where's the OX?
Lockett not wearing a face mask
defense looking stingy, scraping points together by attacking the rim. Marquette looking fearsome.

I think it has to do with the speed of Taylor. Buzz wants to run the press early.
Play Taylor all day long as far as I am concerned.
Ox in, and commits a foul.....
Early, but great defense so far.
Buzz has gone ten deep after seven minutes. Subbing like a crazyman. So much for cutting down on the rotation.

MU was up 14 to 4. D. Wilson just picked up second foul. MU holding lead with basically second unit playing. J. Wilson has done nothing so far, as Vander.
Butler just doesnt look very good. They dont even pass the eye test. They look like an upper echelon mid major but not much more (and I watched their Xavier game). I know its extremely early, but I dont see them making the tourney. Those Final Four years seem like a long time ago with the team they have this year.

5 for 16, 1 for 7 from three. Like watching a slow death from both teams.
One basket, a layup by Ox in last ten minutes.
Xavier beat up on Butler by taking it inside. We need to cut out the threes and take it to the rim.

True. We will have difficulty hitting threes all year but the mid range jumpers will eventually fall....and the lay-ups, too.
This is a game that will stay close through the first half and then we will pull away.

Hope you are right. I don't see how we are going to score enough points to pull away though
We are not a good basketball team. Offense is simply embarrassing.
Blue is killing me with missed layups.
Ugly shots by Vander and Lockett
Offense is just awful. They know Gardner is our MO and planned for it. At least the frustration hasn't carried over to the defense, solid effort there so far. I wanted to be patient with all the doubters, but Blue's offensive game is worse than ever.
Vander is just having another terrible game. 0 for 4 with two bad turnovers.
Ill take the time to look at a positive. Junior looks very solid so far. Put the ball in his hands.
And as soon as I say that....
Congrats on Vander making a shot finally

Better outside shooter, 5 second call to start the game. Solid 8 ppg player. Averaged the 2nd most assists in the Big East last year.
No player should be complemented on their play in first half. Just a brutal show.
Numbers:
J. Wilson 0 points, had two fouls
Junior 4 turnovers
Vander 2 for 7, but key 5 point streak, then just a terrible, terrible shot
Anderson 1 for 4 from FTs.
Gardner invisible
Lockett really nothing
Leading MU rebounder: Jake Thomas with 3
MU great defense with Butler shooting 32%
MU shooting 42%
I've stopped getting upset by Cadougan and Blues play. They are actually keeping us in the game today. I'm just disappointed that Lockett wasn't who i thought he would be and Jamil has been a huge disappointment. Those are the two that need to step up this year.

He falls down a lot when he has the ball. Also seems to dribble it off of his feet a lot.
I have the feeling he's stuck in his own headspace at the moment. Hopefully he figures it out soon.
This team is not very good.
Junior and Vander are what they are. Very disappointed with Lockett and Wilson. Those guys have the ability and experience to affect a game, but they aren't.
Couple thoughts.
1. If Jake Thomas cannot hit the open three on a more consistent basis, what does he provide for this team? His defense stinks, particularly when on the ball, and he is a poor rebounder. I know it's a small sample size, but call me concerned.
2. Steve Taylor is lost on offense, looks almost as if he doesn't know the sets we are running. Hopefully this is just a freshman thing.
3. Junior has to take care of the ball. I know he wants to push the tempo, but it cannot be at the expense of valuing the basketball.
Still think we are fine, but the poor shooting has me concerned for this season.

Its 20 to 17 at least according to ESPN, and from just watching the first half. I don't know if I can forgive Junior for what happened late last year. He turns it over a lot against higher competition. We played scrubs in the first 2 games.

Jamil might have been comfortable being the third offensive option last year. He looked like he wanted no part of even touching the ball today.

Agreed. Lost two big RPI opportunities with OSU and UNC. Sucks. That killed, but can't say Butler didn't deserve to win it. They created much easier opportunities down the stretch (before the last shot), and we could not stop them in a half-court situation.
The Good:
- Vander and Junior stepped up big. Color me very impressed (blue).
- Juan is a great glue guy. He is just everywhere. He lost a few assignments, but his tenacity to never give up on a ball really works well.
The Bad:
- Lockett. He's a step slower out there on his O and D assignments. That foul at the end (where he should have been aware of the shot clock) was ridiculous and uncalled for. I had high expectations, but probably need to taper them after seeing his first 3.
- Jamil. He's so tentative it's unreal. He's supposed to be THE guy, yet he's rarely around.

Agreed. That said, Steve Taylor giving up that offensive rebound was inexcusable. He is as lazy a rebounder as I have seen. Hoping it's a freshman thing and not a trend going forward.
Juan should have been in the game there.
As a team, I think MU can defend and rebound.
They struggle to shoot, which makes teams sag, which limits the driving lanes.
Vander played great, but he was fouled in the mid-range a lot, not when he got all of the way to the hoop. Teams are not going to let MU drive all the way. They will sag and rotate like crazy.
IF (big IF) MU can get some consistent scoring outside, offense will become significantly easier for them.
If not, MU is going to have to win ugly. Scrap, scrape, claw, scratch for every basket.
Early BUT hating that ending and wonder if Jamil got a bit too much sun....awful today, lots of good with VB and some of Juan and JR BUT dang I hate that Rodney, Roddy, Robby, Rott-ney guy
UNC and OSU both off the schedule now.....not good for the SOS.
The defense was fine on the last play...the best it had been for awhile following 8 minutes of Butler layup drills.
Lockett seems passive and I dont know why. He needs to be more assertive or the BE grinder schedule is going to be a major slap in the face for him. The BE is nothing like the PAC12.
Wilson also needs to be more assertive.
In both of their absences, Blue stepped up. Good for him. However, Blue cannot carry this team by himself. We need more out of Lockett and Wilson if we are going to make a run in March.
It's early. Adjustments will happen.

Lockett didn't have many places to go. The defense stayed off of him and simply moved their feet when he put it on the floor.
MU is going to have to find ways to spread the floor. SOMEBODY has to hit a baseline 3. Vander got one. Could use a few more of those.

Agree, though Lockett gets a pass this week because of the broken face. But both are experienced, capable, mature, highly intelligent and leaders. They've got to get some fire and get this team going.

Agreed completely. Good point.
Watching the UNC/MSU game right now... blah blah RPI blah blah...frankly, MU doesn't need to be playing UNC right now. MU has way too much to work on after today's game, and having a game with MSU tomorrow morning is going to be much more beneficial for the team's development than getting pummeled by the heels.
As an aside... the refs from our game earlier just happen to be staying at the Hyatt and walked out of the lobby this a.m. in front of a few dozen MU fans waiting for the bus. My guess is that they'll be coming and going through the back entrance the next couple days. MU lost the game by themselves, but you can tell it's pre-season for the officials as well.
