Title: Thoughts on Cubilan doing the radio
Post by: T-Bone on November 14, 2012, 10:10:52 AM
While watching the game I was trying to figure out who was calling the radio with Homer.  Didn't realize until listening to the post game that it was Cubilan.

Anyone listen to it?  If so, how'd he do?

As much as I liked him as a player he should stick to ESPN Desportes

I recognized Cubi's voice right away as I left the BC with Homer on the radio.

I was hopeful for him, and Homer seemed to suggest he did well .. but his post-game was .. uhh .. not good.  When asked if he had a question for Buzz, he rambled on for 30 seconds about how he himself saw the game, and asked no question.

How was he during the game?

He is no Jimmy Mac, that is for sure.  I was rooting for him, but let's just leave it at that ........ Homer is a nice guy, I'll say that as well.

Good Lord...he's practically brand new! George Thompson was an absolutely horrible announcer, but rightfully adored by a ton of MU fans. DC has personality and, given time, I'm sure he'd be great.

Got a give the guy time to learn the trade. Besides I wonder how any of us would do if we had to cover a game in spanish.

Nestor Figuero, who was a great guy (and cousin of Ed Figuero), did a stint on WQFM. MU alum Bobby Rivers was at the station and helped Nestor get the gig. We all listened eagerly as he first took to the air but he was unintelligible. English is Nestor's second language and had a thick Puerto Rican accent (as opposed to a New Yorican accent.) It was a disaster and he lasted but a few weeks. His next gig was at the Danish Book Store on Wisconsin Ave.

This topic now allows me the opportunity to acknowledge (in my opinion) the best broadcaster in MU history (and a huge fan of the MU program), the late, Joe Metz.

I forgot he did an internship with ESPN Deportes in Milwaukee his senior year:

Yeah, but neither me or desportes would have me professionally covering a game in Spanish.

He does have personality and could become very good but I don't know how long I would keep him on MU games right now if I was the producer.

Was it a one game thing or where was Mac? Mac had been a fill in host for 1130 on Steve's show multiple times before he was signed on for MU games.

A friend of mine lived in the same east side apartment building as Big Bob Lanier. He was eating his Cheerios one morning when he spotted a pair of Lanier's size 22's in the dumpster. Clint ran outside in his boxers, retrieved the shoes, soiled and stained, tied the laces together and hung them from his rear view mirror. The weight of the boats pulled the mirror off its mounting so Clint set up a shrine in the rear window area. He eventually bought a Bucks-themed dog with the moving head for the display. More women honked and waved than when he later bought a Targa. Go figure.

Mac was doing the color commentary on TV for this game.  Open discussion with Homer and Cubby was interesting...gave an update on his professional career.  Homer was soft tossing questions too him....but it was a good exchange.  Once the game started....it went down hill.
